Elite and Captain Blood on Amiga... plenty of emulators and games out there now as abandonware. Trickier getting the Kickstart ROM's tho.

The more recently released ''Darkstar One'' is pretty decent too.

I was very into my space games
Xwing + TieFighter + Xwing vs Tiefighter + Xwing alliance Elite II: Frontier (loved this, but never played the first one and never got into Encounters, still waiting for an Elite 4 ) Pax Imperia (I loved this one, still play it every now and then) Imperium Galactica II (would be so much better if it were balanced in the slightest and the Destructor Ray wasn't such a winbutton) X:Btf + X2 + X3 Fragile Alliegeance Descent + Descent 2 + Descent 3 Descent: Freespace, Freespace 2 Homeworld + Homeworld II (I have Cata too, but It's horrible) Freelancer (I liked the story, but the game itself is nothing special) Darkspace (similar to EVE but without the economy and way more arcadey, was quite fun a few years ago but was ruined by needless nerfs making it nearly impossible to kill anything)
they don't make games like these anymore -----

Elite (Frontier & First Encounters) was the reason I even tried EVE.
A game that old but owns soo much, if now only EVE could implement some things available in Elite I would be soo happy (eg planet flying, sun mining).
Elite is still going strong!
i can see it now chribba with a veldscoop or mining stuff from the suns

Originally by: Kedo Privateer was a very good old school game. Came on 4 cd's with tons of in depth movie scenes that move the storyline along. You can either do the story line missions which leads to the end of the game, or do general kill/escort/deliver missions and do trading just like in eve for cash to buy better stuff/ships.
Definatly if its real cheap get it, tho it runs in dos.
I have not been able to get that to run in XP...
I loved that game...

Not really the deepest game there is but this little freeware gem is fun as hell (and can be pretty damn hard later on). It shares a number of aspects with roguelikes - most systems are randomized and very little is guaranteed between games.

X-wing/Tie Fighter brings back very good memories, the depth to Tie Fighter was superb for its time.
Again I'm *almost* certain there was a virtually impossible secret mission you could do for the Emperor - iirc as soon as you undocked you had to kill something but by the time you got close to it it'd hyperspaced out - I have fuzzy memories of this as I wonder if sometimes because you'd got as far as you could within the secret order some missions were designed to fail.
DarkStar One I've heard promising things about, I need to go on a major spending spree, again.

I don't know if I ever got that far within the Order. But I think TIE Fighter was the best of all of them. Although, the Balance Of Power Campaign for XvT was great, loved the first time I saw the SSD.
If I can find XvT and we can get it to work, it'd be great to set up some time of multiplayer games. Like all TIE Fighters in an asteroid field.

Iirc it was a corellian transport and at that point you were flying the gunboat, which meant that once you undocked you had to immediately reroute power from the shields and weapons to the engine to get more speed, catch up with it, disable it and then come back and take it apart at your leisure once the rest of your guns charged up again. Please note that in this case "at your leisure" meant "as the ships defending the transport fill space with so many energy weapon blasts that a jettisoned chicken would be charbroiled in ten seconds".
We have an original copy of Privateer 2 in the CCP library. I want to figure out how to extract the movies. Clive Owen did a great job, as did Christopher Walken (I want to get Christopher Walken to voice Aura in EVE).

I spent countless hours in the beginning of the 90ies playing Frontier: Elite II , that was the time when a big game was holding on 6 or 7 floppy disks and you had to mess with the config.sys and autoexec.bat of your DOS before to have the goddamn game working

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 29/11/2007 20:36:59 i played Privateer 2: The Darkening a great deal, awesome game with some very good acting. Bought a Gravis Phoenix for it, a 47 button programmable monster of a joystick, probably one of the few sticks to need both a joystick port and a keyboard plug. (turned out to be DOS only, Windows 95/98 and XP chocke on it) Also Wing Commander 3-5 were fun, although 5 looked considerably less impressive than its 2 predecessors. Wing Commander 5: Secret Ops was a free game released later, i doubt its still downloadable, but it was basically an overhauled WC5 engine with more goodies added and a new episodic campaign. Came in 7 episodes i believe. Master of Orion 2: awesome game, still play it to this day, so much better than MoO3 in every single way. Although Galactic Civilisations II comes awefully close to its quality.

I want to say there was a re-release of All three in like 2000, so I am hoping it should. But for those of us who don't have the CDs, or at least I haven't found it yet, give it a try. I remember maually updating my computer to Win 95, 8 more megs of RAM, and a P90, just do try and play XvT
But I haven't tried a minefield, I must do this now.

Edited by: Avery Fatwallet on 29/11/2007 21:42:55 by the way.... am i the only one that thinks it would be a pretty adorable move of lucasarts to make some games of the xwing series freeware?
they could combine that with releasing a new game some time later and cash in big time.
in fact, sorry for derailing the thread, a friend and i were discussing the xwing games the other day and the inevitable "hey, i played it not too long ago and i cant believe how ****ty it looked" came up. this got me thinking, and i think i remember the following: first xwing game probably was called ... xwing. it had polygon graphics. just ... you know... triangles, rectangles, and some colors. thats all.
but then, and im not sure if im correct, somebody came up with this fancy new stuff they called "guraud shading" (i think), which basically just put light/shadow effect on certain (all?) polygons. imho it was a major improvement to the looks of games, and i wouldnt be surprised if this (realization of the) basic idea was like.. a total groundbreaking revolution to 3D engines.
and i wouldnt be surprised if some of the stuff isnt used still, unchanged, just with higher resolution and fancy new name tags. somebody care to explain? i always hope eve-o is just a geeky enough place that, no matter what strange computer-related-stuff you ask, somebody will step forward and know. of course i could just google it and look at some screenshots.... but that is not as much enjoyable, as getting YOU to type something funny/helpful!
anyways, im not saying a game in the xwing series was the first to present guraud shading (im thinking of "alone in the dark", "stunt island" and "strike commander" now) to the public, but im pretty sure, thats what made one of the games (XvT maybe?) look sooo much better than the others?
the best part was: XvT and wing commander IV were the ONLY good looking games in my life i got to enjoy at really high frame rates, WHILE they were new... damn thats cool and sad at the same time... im happy, it was those games and not... NFS:U for instance.
my friends dad had a pc for CAD back then, which, while being an office pc rocked the games of that time... whadda pleasure it was to play Xwing on this thing... which ****ed my dad off, who forked out major mola to get us the first pentium in town.
oh damn.. now i remember ... wing commander 4... no sleep... bad grades... oh crap! thats the reason why im poor now! and i didnt even do drugs!
but yeah, maniac going "isnt that the guy from star wars" in the ending movie TOTALLY was worth it.

Bah it floods back now, I'm not one for normally fiddling with all that shields/speed/weapons malarky aka lazy but I'd figured out I needed to divert all power to the engines but when you disable it it gets taken out so yeah, that's what made me think it was *impossible* plus I was either the top or second top rank in the order anyway.
Same reasoning behind my failure at Freespace 2's mission I got stuck on but I tried every ship I could think of - the fast ones weren't powerful enough and the slow ones were too slow :(
I can't believe I forgot the Wing Commander series - I'm right in thinking there's a mission in WC4 iirc where you have to search for ships in an asteroid field/radar jamming zone?
I was lucky on that one and did it fairly quickly but I know people that were stuck for hours+ on it.
The final count for broken joysticks and WC was 3 I believe.

Some more I forgot about (ty whoever reminded me of the first two):
Tachyon: Beyond the Fringe (similar to Freelancer in many ways but without the annoying mouse control) Wing Commander: Prophecy (similar to Freespace but with SO many cutscenes and a very in-depth singleplayer, plus I loved the alien ships) Nexus: The Jupiter Incident Star Trek: Klingon Academy (only ST game I've ever liked, very difficult too)
Starscape (2D, mindless fun and you can even go mining ) Tyrian (2D, VERY arcadey but fun) Space Quest I, IV, V (a Sci-fi RPG series, it's quite basic but very funny)
I would mention Battlecruiser 3000AD - a game with SO much potential but ruined by millions upon millions of bugs and just how damn random it was (and something to do with Derek Smart) -----
