Shame I heard he was a decent science fiction author. I remember a PC Gamer review of EVE Online mentioning being able to live the Iain M Banks dream - BBC News |

Sad news indeed. Let's hope he outlives the prognosis or at least goes as painlessly / peacefully as possible. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Really sad.
I've only read a few of his short stories though.
Bad week for this as even Roger Ebert's cancer has returned.......... There is much to be said in favour of modern journalism. By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.-á-á-á-á - Oscar Wilde |

Very sad on a number of levels. Much too young to be passing on. A huge loss for the literary world. At not-yet 60, he'd have had his best writing years ahead of him. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

I wonder if he ever planned to end the Culture series with a bang....
I never got around to finishing more than a few of his books, I feel a loss I will never know what the history of the Algabraeist was...

At least he got to see an unfinished work print of "Blade Runner".

Considering his ghastly support for arms dealing to those who shoot antitank missiles at school buses and fire rockets at civilian houses, I consider this as good news. |

Someone needs to get a life. After all, this is about someone losing one.

Google for his letter at Guardian and read it. I found it at Guardian's site and assume it is for real, unless someone there has forged it in their blind hate. Then google (if you haven't been reading to news) where those weapons the arms embargo he raved at are used. Be enlightened. As for someone losing his life (or his books) making that person above criticism, well, I say bollocks to that. Disease never sanctified anyone, nor good wordsmanship made them better person. |

That isn't a citation, that's you failing to back up your claim.
I believe the most political things he's done are supporting an independent Scotland, calling for a former British prime minister to be impeached over the 2003 invasion of Iraq, cutting up his passport in protest against the same invasions and lambasting Israel for raiding an aid flotilla to the Gaza strip (I presume this is what you're talking about in your statement, if it is I happen to agree with him on general principle.)
Your statement is political anyway, and as such is inappropriate and against forum rules.

Anna Karhunen wrote:Google for his letter at Guardian and read it. . I quite agree that disease doesn't sanctify a person. Attacking a person who is no position to defend himself, however, says many things about those who do it though.
As for his letter, I looked it up. You do realize that in every conflict, there are at least two sides? And that reasonable and intelligent people may be found on each side? Folks who simply do not agree with whatever faction you support? Your vitriol indicates you're not able to come to that realization.
I think he was wrong, but that does not make him worthy of hate, nor would him being wrong cause me to celebrate his death: He's not evil - just wrong. Clebrating the death of a non-evil person would be the act of a barbarian. Actually, celebrating death in general is barbaric. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short.
