Can anyone point me to one? The player guide barely mentions them. I tried Eve Search but didn't find anything for new players. Thanks.

Launched one but was losing the fight and bugged out so I didn't get to watch it in action. Do I direct it or does it fight my target automatically, or pick it's own target? Does it require ammo? I assume it can't follow if I warp out - is that correct?
Basically I know noting about them. Thanks.
PS - Will be offline until Sunday so if anyone responds I appreciate it but won't see it for a few days.

Drone crash course.
1) skills heavy drones skills works with scout drones so get that one. more drones = better
2) tactic Dont let drones out, npc s have the habbit to target them and they are weaker then ship.
Correct way to use them Wait till all npc have you as target = blinking red in overview launch drones let them attack (command) 1 of the npc As soon as that one is dead they ll automaticle attack the rest of the spawn, so you can either command them to take another one out that you want dead fast (scramblers/webbers/high damage) or just let them do their job Spawn dead -> return to drone bay or if you have remote armor repairer fitted repair/return to drone bay
3) ships/drones `best` drone ships are those with extra bonus such as vexor/dominix or if you want to go extreme Ishtar. `best` drones are medium scouts: fast, high survivability, good damage. Personally I prefer hammerheads.

There are combat and mining drones pictorials on my site below.
As for whether they will auto fight, that seems to be whatever mood they are in, sometimes they do sometimes they don't. ___________________________________________ http://www.eve-tutor.com

Hari Throw a few drones in your drone bay, as much as you have skills for or as much as you can hold whchever is the greater. When you are in a battle and have been targeted by all NPC's target the closest one (takes less time for your drone to reach it) go to the overview and right click on "drones in bay" select launch drones from list and it will launch as many as you have skills to handle (5 plus one per level of drone interfacing) Right click on drones in space on overview and select "attack my target" from list. Continue to do this untill all targets are gone. By directing the drones to target and attack the NPC's one at a time you will concentrate their fire and so eliminate the targets faster and suffer less damage to yourself as a result. By waiting till you have been targeted by all the NPC's before releasing your drones they will attack you instead of your drones and you can repair your own damage in space without having to return to a station and paying money to do so, you also have more chance of "tanking" the attack than drones do and drones cost money. Remember to right click on "drones in space" from the overview at the end of the battle then select "return and orbit" when they are all back circling your ship you can do this again but this time select "scoup to drone bay". There in a nutshell is how you operate drones. A few points of note. CCP is altering the AI of NPC's such that they may in the future re-target a different item in space (ie.your drone) in a future patch so watch for this. DO NOT forget that you have drones to use, I have felt silly several times sitting in my pod and looking at them on my list of destroyed items thinking OOooohhh yyeeeeesss, I had drones. Lastly, if you expand your drones in drone bay you can select several drones and group them in little battle groups, this is handy when you have ten in space you can direct 5 to two NPC's and they will cope just fine, killing them twice as fast, you can also group them so that you have a heavy with a few mediums if your drone bay is big enough, try it and see what works for you. Oh and different drones do different typs of damage, try and match the drones you load up to the type of rat you are expecting to encounter depending on the reagion of space you are in. Hope this helped, see you in space

I've been putting together notes on combat drones and other EvE topics. (Something to pass the time in transit ) It doesn't discuss tactics, but you'll hopefully find some useful info:
http://cosigan.blogspot.com/2005/09/combat-drones.html
Tactics and knowing your enemy is important. I sent my drones against a 20k rat before I fired on it. The drones didn't take a hit, apparently the rat had no weapons with fast enough tracking, and the rat didn't fire a single shot at me because it was targeting the drones. On the other hand, just about any Sancha will eat light drones for breakfast.

Thanks for the added words of wisdom folks. Been mostly fighting Sancha's so far so I'll make sure to get their full attention before letting loose the drones.
