I am very new to EVE having recently finished my 14 day trial and being subbed for a week now.
However I am a veteran of several MMOs going all the way back to PSO on the Dreamcast. I have found my way to EVE via variouis F2P and subscription games amongst them FFXI Online, Everquest 2, SW:TOR, Guld wars 1 & 2 and lord knows how many more.
I seem to see alot of jackasses in the the Rookie channel who seem to think they have joined the `take the mickey out of the Rookies channel`. I guess I am lucky with my experience in MMOs that I have managed to pick up things fairly quickly. It is obvious to me that alot of people dont seem to grasp that others may not only be new to EVE itself but may in fact be new to MMOs in general.
I guess that there will always be self styled `experts` who enjoy flaunting their superior knowledge to lesser mortals. If you are new too I can only urge that you try to join a good corporation as soon as you can. Mine have been really helpful and have made the game really enjoybale and accessible for me.
I think that the two most overlooked assets in the game is the help panel and the browser. If their is something you dont understand just hit F12 and you can search the EVElopedia or look up tutorials on various aspects of the game. Also on the top left of the screen is the menu accessed via the `E` symbol. Here you can access the built in browser, your contracts, a calculator, a notepad and much more.
Anyway if anyone sees me in game I am always willing to help if i can.
Remember the golden rule though... It's a game and it should be about having fun |

I have been trying the last few nights to find a "NEW PLAYER FRIENDLY" corp, with no success, i asked in local for help with a mission, one person offered to escort me to the objective, then proceeded to feck of with contents of said objective, and ask for isk to have it returned. Needless to say i told them to go **** a donkey, but now i cannot complete the mission. |

welcome to Everyone vs Everyone.
Try petitioning it, the devs _may_ be nice and reset the mission for you ... now, if it's a non-starter mission (from Aura, or the 6 career agents), then it might just be easier to fail the mission and get a new one.
I'd suggest "Brave Newbies" as a corp -- they seem to be making a name for themselves, even as a group of (more or less) completely new characters.
One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia Malcanis for CSM8 |

If it was one of the training missions, file a petition to have the mission reset; the GM are generally pretty chill with resetting them for new players (not sure, but considering various GM have, in the past made comments regarding the Sisters of EvE epic arc also being a sort of tutorial arc, they may assist with that, as well; no promises on any of this, though). If it was a regular mission... well, I hate to say it, but welcome to EvE: ransoming mission objectives is not uncommon, though it isn't exactly a regular even, either.
Best of luck in finding a corp!

Welcome to EVE.
Ive been playing for a month now. Lost 4 Thorax's, 3 of them in lowsec. All part of the learning progress. The people in the rookie chat that "take the mickey" are taking the mickey out of those that choose not to read the tutorials and expect everything to be handed to them. I personally hate people like that. There is a tutorial for a reason but when I see someone asking "how do i enter my ship"... Aura tells you this in the first several paragraphs of the game so yes, i will take the **** out of you for being lazy. If you have to ask simple questions that are explained in the tutorial (with options to revisit them over and over and over again) then EVE isn't for you IMO
But thats just me and im a quick learner. Also helps that I read everything at the beginning and have good friends already in game that have been playing for several years so Meh.
Enjoy one of thee best games to hit PC, it's absolutely amazing. |

GM's also are very generous with help to rookies, and can reset missions.

I found the chat channel of the NPC corp you start in to be more helpful than the Rookie help channel, which usually whizzes past so fast as to make it almost unreadable in any case.
There's usually a few people in NPC corp chat willing to answer questions, give some friendly advice, or help out in tricky missions.
Yes, there's going to be the e-peen warriors, and that guy who puts a bounty on everyone who chats, but those characters are in the minority.
Aside from the painful tax rate, there's no urgency to rush out to find a player corp - there's plenty of help, friends and mentors already at hand if you just get to know a few of your fellow NPC corpmates. |

Hence my fight against space windmills like a sci-fi Nostradamus in another thread to get CCP to include more 1v1 help for rookies.
1v1 means special dedication by a single guy who uses his time to answer your questions. (rookie) help chat channel moves too fast to provide a quick and good help to new players. When a WoW player leaves to return to WoW, the avg. IQ of both games rises. Professional Forum Thread locker. |

I am new to Eve as well.. my experiences have been mixed. I have not been ganked, but I am also rather cautious. I have had people try to scam me, but keep your head about you and you will usually see right through it. PVP, gankers, market wars, and ninja salvagers are common place and just things to accept as part of the Eve culture.
That said..I also, during my 2nd week of play, was gifted an enormous amount of ISK, ships, and goods from a retiring player. There are some good peeps out there, you just have to make sure you are trusting the right ones.

Welcome to the sandbox OP, you have the right attitude to go far in this game. Just keep treating it as such and you'll be here for a longggggg time. Some people get too caught up in the political side of EVE, and while that can be fun, spending too much time on it and not enough on doing what you love will burn you out faster than a Microwarpdrive (you'll get that joke when you train thermodynamics to only 1 and attempt to overheat)

The Rookie help channel has always been garbage.
Newbie friendly corps/alliances:
Eve University - open to all RvB - open to all CFC Alliances - semi exclusive (You won't get into Goonswarm proper unless you are a SA member. HBC Alliances -semi exclusive (You won't get into Dreddit proper unless you are a redditor)
I've never joined Eve Uni or RvB, but I can tell you that both Goonswarm and Test alliance dote on/worship their new players, but recruiting standards generally require you be a part of one of the various communities that make them up. |

Understand EvE is marketed as a PvP game. If you played other MMOs that have PvP servers you'll see/understand they smack talk to no end. It's also an impatient lot, and others often just refer to them as "mouthbreathers", their soul purpose to measure epeens by killing little red x's.
EvE is a game of what you make of it. Other MMOs it's friendly and they encourage you to do group activities like it's a church social. EvE, they'd rob the deacon and worse. GMs or the devs won't intervene, the inmates run the asylum. Think of it as the Stanford Prison experiment, but it's allowed to continue for 10 years.
Once you understand that, it's water off the ducks back. Just leave them to spin their ships in circles, and find your niche that makes you happy. "In a world of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." ~George Orwell

This.
You'll go far.
I'm a relatively new player myself (few weeks at most) and I feel that I have picked up EVE relatively quickly. (The more indepth a game mechanics are, the better I personally find). I was introduced to a channel called neweden-radio which is the in game channel for New Eden Radio. The DJ's are helpful and the players in the channel have a joke with you and also are extremely helpful. I learnt more from these guys in the space of 10 minutes (and had my questions answered quicker) than the entirety of my time spent in the "Rookie Help". I wouldn't say, "oh you're a new player, pummel this channel with help questions". But the odd one or two questions is great, and if someone knows the answer they will tell you. Don't get me wrong, the "Rookie Help" is fantastic but only when there is an ISD online. Otherwise it's mostly full of elitest pri**s trying to lord it out over noobs and telling them the wrong thing for sh*ts and giggles. (Note I do say "mostly" and not everyone).
Anywho, as for help, I've had a lot of help off the guys in New Eden Radio and for that I thank them. I will repay them by helping them back in any way possible. Also if there is any new guys that have a question and no one gives a straight answer, hit me up with a message or convo me in game and I will help in anyway I can. Even if I dont know the answer I can ask around and get back to you.
They say the first rule of EVE is not to trust anyone, but if thats the case you're going to have a lonely experience playing EVE.
My first rule of EVE is always undock with the expectations to lose your ship. But if you're going down, at least make them work for it.
Enjoy EVE. And welcome. It's human nature to want to explore. To find your line and go beyond it. The only limit, is the one you set yourself. |

Don't trust anyone is NOT the same as don't speak to anyone.
It just means you shouldn't be blindly following anything he says or give him stuff and expect something back.
I always encourage new players to talk to other people too. Even when I'm giving them a Q&A 1-on-1 conversation, I highly encourage they also take their questions to others / a public channel like help or local.
Why, because multiple answers are always better then one single answer. My answer, unintentionally, will always be biased by my personal preferences, personal experience in EVE and my personality. So by getting multiple answers, you can pick out the ones that are incorrect, you can pick out the parts where other people were slightly wrong and you can make a more real picture about the answer without all the small biased things in it. I'm impressed by the attitude of the newbie posts in this thread. It's good to see newbies that are enjoying the challenge of Eve. If you ask relevant questions in this sub forum, on the whole you will get informative and helpful answers, I do however urge you to go through the first few pages just to check if your question has come up recently. We're all willing to help in here, but we can get somewhat terse when we seem to be answering the same questions day in and day out.
Good luck newbies, fly safe, or not A war hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside. |
