I'm looking to create some alts for the purpose of ganking... So, how many gank Catalysts are needed to gank an untanked Hulk? An untanked Mackinaw? A tanked exhumer?
Thanks. Yarr |

A tech2 catalyst does around 700 dps. You can easily do the math yourself. |

Most mining ships, at least exhumers can have a 20k ehp tank without sacrificing yield. if they drop yield for tank they will have 30-40k ehp.Skiffs are closer to 80k ehp. Even a retriever or covetor can get very close to 20k ehp at the cost of yield. A procurer can hit 40-50k ehp.
A T2 fit Talos will get off two shots before CONCORD shows up doing about 8,000 damage per shot. So 16,000 damage per Talos. A Ganknado will only get off one shot but will due about 14,000 damage with its high alfa strike. Most exhumers would now need 2 talos' or ganknados to take them down. You will never get enough loot to recoupe the cost of 2 talos from killing a mining ship, even an exhumer.
So if you know for sure they are max yield fit you still need to overcome at least 20k ehp in 20-30 seconds. One ship will not do that. Other wise plan on 30-40k ehp.
This is why most gankers have switched over the ganking haulers since the mining ship revamp. A T1 hauler can be killed with a single Catyst and can drop 50-60 mil worth of loot if it was fully loaded with over 100k isk in cargo.
A freighter can be even better but you need 40 catysts or 8-10 Talos for that. |

With perfect skills: Max Yield Skiff: 76-78k Max Yield Procurer: 60-62k
These numbers are before any leadership bonuses, gang links, or implants. Don't know about the other barges. |

Actually considering catalysts,Brutix, and Talos do only thermal/kinetic damage the effective tank can be even higher, as the EHP you see in the fitting screen is based on your lowest resist. |

You could gank a max yield fit Retriever with a single thrasher or catalyst in 0.5, but in most cases it wouldn't really be worth the sec status and isk unless your only objective was to inflict emotional damage on the miner pilot or his corp.
As other posters have pointed out, the Exhumers are a bit tougher now. |

based on trial and error, rather than numbers, 3 cats can comfortably kill 2 untanked hulks or mackinaws.
the same 3 cats can also comfortably kill 1 active tanking mack with officer or faction shield mods.
3 cats kill almost anything. 2 cats can slaughter any untanked ships. 1 cat is safe for soloing untanked retrievers. No exhumer, no matter how well tanked (officer mods) survives past 5-6 cats.
The more expensive the tank is, the easier it is to scramble fleets, so the number people attracted to the gank rises proportionately to the tank. Game balance at is best. I have another set of questions:
1. Why are you guys giving this guy all the answers when he could do the math himself, instead of you doing it for him, when this has been asked multiple times and found via search?
2. Why didn't this guy just Google search....it was the most talked about topic last December.

3. Why is the sky blue? Probably because we have nothing better to do, I dunno... But since it has already started (and because I'm bored too), here's another thing that can help you, especially since fitting guessing games were mentioned too:
[Venture, Recon Venture] Type-D Attenuation Signal Augmentation
Passive Targeting Array I Practical Type-E Ship Probe Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
Dual Diode Mining Laser I Dual Diode Mining Laser I [empty high slot]
Small Ionic Field Projector I Small Ionic Field Projector I [empty rig slot]
You know what to do with this one |
