Maurasi, last night. I'm patrolling the belts looking for macrominers. In one belt I find a hauler and six Feroxes mining. They all have silly placeholder names like "uiuiuiu." I scan them and see they all have identical equipment. I notice they all fly in a long line, except when they warp out, which they do slowly, one by one. All six of them are completely silent. Only the seventh ship, the hauler, speaks.
I couldn't imagine a more obvious case of macromining, so I steal their ore. The hauler then swears at me in local, so I petition him.
Then I get reamed by the rest of the channel for ore theft.
Try as I might, I cannot convince them that macrominers are bad. I can barely convince them that the six identical formation flying Feroxes actually are macrominers. As far as everyone is concerned, macrominers can quite happily bleed the belts dry, but I will be hunted down like a dog if I steal so much as one fluff of rock from them.
Am I wrong to steal ore from farmers?

I don't object to macro-miners, for the same reason I continued to buy Nike products when their sweatshops became an issue. Fact remains, their contribution is needed for the empire markets. |

It's not an exploit to steal from macrominers, the exploit is not petitioning them and stealing all their marcomined ore; basically making it so that you use their marco for your benefit
Petition them, once you have done that, then help yourself.

I mentioned in local that I'd petitioned the hauler. They assumed that I'd petitioned him for macromining, laughed at me and told me I was wasting my time.

Nope. One is a legitimate, if villified profession. The other is a bannable offense. --------------

You exploit the macro when you do not petition them, if you petition them for exploitng ( macro use) and steal their ore after you filed the petition then it's all fine and dandy.

If you pay attention then you would notice that ccp doesn't allow macro programs to be run on eve.
This macro mining is a offence that should be petitioned.

Edited by: DMAN666vic on 10/09/2005 05:21:54 I believe the only universally allowed actions to be taken against macro miners are to first petition, then transfer their ore into your own jet can, then proceed to blow up your jet can. Thus the ill begotten ore is nullified and you have done your part in helping to discourage the macro mining menace.

I have been in other games that have these so called macro groups. We would police them ourselves. It would be enjoyable to get hate PM's from them when they found their macro groupe dead.

Is it an exploit to just blow up their ore then? Because thats what I do. Drop it into my own can and blast it.

Ore thievery is part of the game, ore farming by macrominers is not.
If ANYONE finds a large group of marcominers, fgs report them straight away.
On another note, if they are all in the same corp that is not a startercorp - declare war on them

Actually mission runners are the worst of all, they add a ton of isk to the game without taking much/if any out. Macroers only transfer from one player to the next as they sell the minerals to other players, then take that isk and sell it to another player. Wereas the mission runners are pulling isk in from ncp's and adding it to the overall game.

Yeah but mission runners have more chance to also loose their stuff..wich means they need to invest the money they got in that same market again..so thats a nice circle.

I'm sorry, but they do NOT invest in 'that same market' the majority of them (99% at minimum) invest into the pc market so in effect add that isk to the player market thus adding to the total isk in game. Macroers mine a lot, but as they sell to the player market right to begin with they do not add any isk to the total sum ingame (note this is unlike other games where they DO add money by farming).

Macromining is metagaming, especially when the proceeds are sold for real-life cash. Metagaming is bad and invariably hurts the other players of the game - whatever the game.
Mission running is playing within the framework of the game, and so if there is a problem, it's more due to bad game design than bad attitudes towards the game.

not every ore thief hangs around to see if the owner has a macro. and why bother petitioning? you dont do anything about it anyway. seems ore thieves are doing a better job of detering macro miners than the GMs lol. how many people have filed petitions and nothing is done? i know i have.

Macro miners are lower than ore thieves... Macro Miners are lower than a snakes belly in a really deep ditch that fell in a hole in the ditch... a really low ditch... in holland... Ban em all!

Perhaps you'd like to clarify what you mean by meta-gaming? The contribution of macro-miners within the Eve environment is an effective automation of a tedious below-average income[1] job. Macro miners usually operate within high-sec space, that further limits the potential impact on the overall gaming environment (the obvious exception being several now banned accounts that operated within a 0.0 region). The gain from this activity for each player, is reflected with the increase in supply, and thus a lower price. Another thing worth attention is the fact, that you rarely see ore available at the 'buy-ingame-stuff' sites. This means that their macro-goods most likely serve additional 3rd party members prior to getting out of in-game circulation.
For other mmo games I've tried I could agree with you, but not for our beloved Eve.[2]

When the GM's cant find evidence of macro mining but still thinks someone looks suspicious they will keep track of them. It's a general rule of thumb that dev's, gm's and even moderators do not say how many people are banned or have been warned. I can only recall one instance where GM's made an annoucement to tell how many accounts were permanently removed from the game for macro mining.
This doesn't mean no one gets banned for macro mining or that your petitions are not investigated, they are and the GM's and devs are very grateful for your petitions.

I dont suggest that people go out and 'steal' ore. However, really think about it carefully. If you were to walk down the street leaving little piles of money on the sidewalk do you really truly believe that it would be there when you come back to it?
People are complaining about the greed of others stealing ore left behind in cans because you mined too much and cant carry it all. Who is the greedy one here?
If its left behind, it is not stealing. Finders keepers, This is built into the game mechanics and is an intentional part of the game. Deal with it, move on, leave guards, be less greedy and mine what you can carry.
Its a GAME. enjoy it.

I don't think it'd be worth a concorddokken just to kill some macro miner, since most seem to be in high sec space.
0.4 and below though, count me in!
