It has to be said that unscheduled downtimes of indeterminate duration are frustrating as hell.
What invariably makes it worse is the lack of 'official' information from CCP that we see.
Whilst there may be no concrete information, and everyone might well be running around like crazy trying to fix the issue, a quick 2 mins every quater or half hour would go a long way to easing that frustration.
Even something along the lines of 'dunno whats wrong, but waiting for a guy to arrive who will find: eta 20 mins', or 'replacing hardware: eta xxx mins' would be helpful.
So how about it CCP? What about a regular situation update in these situations, and at least give us a rough idea of what is going on, and what to expect?

Yes, I was rather discounting that as being unhelpful and useless, as it has been saying that for the last 3 hours.
I'm talking about a regularily updated situation report with some indication of time lines.
But thanks for the pointer, nonetheless.

I can tell you from years of experience as a system/network admin that estimates are pretty much pointless when you're troubleshooting.
All you really say is this: "If whatever solution we're trying right now fixes the problem, then we'll be up in 20 minutes". But seeing as there's no guarantee that the current action will fix whatever problem it is you're having, you simply end up making the same statement every time you have to come up with a new solution (which happens a lot when you're troubleshooting, cos if you knew what the problem was, you wouldn't be troubleshooting).
In reality, users tend to complain even more if you keep them posted of your exact progress, because at every failed attempt to fix the problem they will hit you over the head with a "But you SAID it would be up in 20 minutes." Which isn't what you said (there was an IF involved), but it's easier to read what you want to read I guess.
Most amusing user behaviour I've experienced was with a power outage. User comes up to me and says: "When will everything be back up?" So I answered: "I've talked it over with the power company and we've agreed to switch the electricity back on at 3pm." The user answered: "Oh, okay, thanks. I'll go tell everyone."
