I have a pair of big announcements to make today. First, the EVE Online community shattered the concurrent user record, this time breaking the 15,000 player barrier. Pending retrieval of the server logs, 15,209 players were logged in to EVE at 20:20 GMT. There were a few server hiccups in some of the higher traffic systems, but these will be addressed in the near future with a hardware upgrade.
Next stop? 20,000 concurrent users with zero lag!
The second announcement that I have to make involves my other title here at CCP, Volunteer Manager. CCP utilizes the Interstellar Services Department, a volunteer program of over 120 players, for various tasks, including player support, forum moderation, events and bug hunting/QA. At last yearÆs FanFest, CoffeeCup from the STAR program received special recognition for going above and beyond the call of duty. When FanFest 2005 was announced, Oveur and I decided to institute a Volunteer of the Year award. After over a month of recommendations, discussion, and deliberation, a decision had to be made. This is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make pertaining to ISD, but I had to choose one of the four finalists. I do not envy the team leads their having to nominate the finalists from their teams, as there are so many volunteers worthy of the same amount of recognition.
Having said that, the Interstellar Services Department Volunteer of the Year for 2005 is announced in a new Dev Blog.

I disagree, Istvaan does have a lot to do with our work, without him we wouldn't have so much to do...

How about an award for the OLDEST still active volunteer?
Here he is in Action!
Faulty testing kept me from delivering the "Logic Editor" earlier.
I was using my own post and it kept blanking everything out.

You don't know the half of it. Charmingly egocentric diatribes put aside for the moment, if you ever want to have a fun bit of reading, google "guiding hand social club" (with the quotation marks) - you'll find pages upon pages of gaming forums completely unassociated with Eve Online, discussing the heist and Eve as a result of it. A common theme can be found in these threads: numerous players making posts to the tune of "Damn, this game sounds amazing, I have to try it".
If you think I'm proud of myself, the pride I feel for my corporation dwarfs that by magnitudes. I firmly believe their accomplishment and the publicity it generated is the primary reason for Eve's recent population boom.

There are a few other common themes as well that you don't mention . Still, there's no doubt that it was gaming history, and one of the common themes was amazement that any gamesystem exists that could even allow such an action to have taken place.
I like to picture someone reading one of these articles about the heist, and thinking despairingly about his WoW "GOLD PLZZ" .
You are in a maze of twisty little asteroids, all alike. |

I'm still waiting on my new Ferrari. When I see it parked in my garage, I'll buy your package. Oh, and it has to be the real thing, no reproductions on a Mustang frame, no models, no Hot Wheels!

Oh, and just to bug you further, Blinky, did you hear about the Ferrari kit cars that were built on a Fiero chassis? How about the VW Bug frame? You cringing yet?
Besides, the new body style 'Stangs are pretty sweet looking!
