Hi guys/girls,
When is the best time for logging in to Eve for mining if you live in the Southern Hemisphere?
I live in New Zealand and by the time I get to login and start playing I find that most of the sites are shells of their former selves.
When is a good time to log on before the Orca crews get fired up? :-)

Well, rocks get upgraded during downtime, so if your goal is to avoid depletion you should log in as soon after downtime as possible.
However, your issue sounds more like a location problem than a time frame problem. Rocks only grow a small amount each downtime, so trying to log in earlier isn't going to help a lot. What you want to do is find an area that is not so popular with competing miners, so you can mine rocks that have been growing for weeks with no one disturbing them. As a general rule, Caldari and Gallente space get heavily mined, while Minmatar and especially Amarr space tend to be quiet zones. Some scouting around in a frigate with an ore scanner can be helpful for finding belts with big rocks.

I find that on weekends, highsec belts are stripped bare by Saturday afternoon (US time). So either mine during the week, or if you are "brave enough", check out your local lowsec systems. Otherwise, check out dead-end (or cul de sac) systems like Yarebap and Finid (those systems had a lot of East Europeans last time I was nearby).
If you do go the lowsec route, be advised that the grav sites are totally worthless from an isk/hour metric. Even if you are desperate for megacyte, it is more economical to mine anything else and buy the megacyte on the market.

Step 2: Don't mine there for a week. Watch the tears of your rivals as they lose ship after ship.

There is plenty to mine in lower traffic systems.
I went through Black Rise recently and most systems were bordering on empty. Khanid space is often a ghost town despite how few systems it has. I never have a problem finding spots in Gallente or Minmatar space either for that matter.
Basically, just move away from the high population centers (trade hubs and Caldari space). |

Basically the choices for aussies are: move along, war dec them - and win, play for 4 hours after DT and mine as much as you can. |

It would be kind of nice to have a 12 hour refresh instead of a 24 hour one if only to make it a little fairer on those of us who don't want to get out of bed at midnight due to work in the morning. |

Actually, the 'roids do grow during the day at varying times, but whether or not this actually happens gets debated fruitlessly over and over again.

I guess that would depend on where in the Southern Hemisphere you live, since there are multiple large landmasses down here in multiple different time zones.

I really would love to play all day and all night but I have a job and a wife and also have to obey nature.
Now if I was a cyborg then maybe a different story but I'm not too sure if being so violates CCP's anti-bot rules. |

I'm in New Zealand. That puts us 12 hours ahead of GMT so reboot is often around 10:30 / 11:00 so I can only get on after reboot at midnight our time.
Australia is about 2 hours behind is for the most part so they get to get on at a reasonable time. |
