Okay, so looking at the specs on paper of a MWD for my Thorax. Doesn't look that appealing. I really don't like the idea of losing on capacitor since the ship is so dependent on them to begin with.
So tell me, why do I need one? -Shadrin Nominated for "Mr. I Think I'm Way Too Tough For My Own Thorax 2005"

I think (I'm not sure) that on a thorax it is used to get close to the enemy, so you blasters and drones are in range.

It allows you to get in close, and do so fast. Against any target better armed, and most that are similarly-armed, you have to get in close, under their tracking, fast, or they'll kill you as you approach. Against any target weaker than you are, you have to get in close fast to web/scramble them, and stop them running away. Again, if you use an afterburner, you'll lose your kill.
Besides, the thorax has a fantastic bonus to alleviate the cap issue, and thus can afford to use a MWD better than any other ship in the game, (bar the Deimos and Vindicator, which sport similar bonuses, and interceptors, which are of course built for speed) ---:::---

1 click of a good mwd gets a thorax over 1000m/s and quickly too. If your using a blaster setup the quicker you can get into optimal range the better.
With the thorax mwd bonus the cap usage is greatly reduced as well.

the benefit of MWD is extreme speed.
the disadvantages are many. personally, i only fit MWD on my shuttle/loot collection ships - but i understand in combat they do have their uses. i prefer to use a tracking disruptor to stop ppl hitting me while approachin/orbitting

So should I reconsider using rails if I want to put a MWD on? ------------------------------------ -Shadrin Nominated for "Mr. I Think I'm Way Too Tough For My Own Thorax 2005"

Edited by: Stuart Price on 12/09/2005 19:04:36 In a small ship.
Turn MWD on. move to desired range, preferably by using decreasing orbits to keep tranversal velocity up (high transversal = harder to hit, important when using a MWD and it's sig radius penalty). At desired range, turn MWD off. You are now where you want be be and very likely quite hard to hit.
Orbiting close in with a MWD turned on = BOOM.
And use rails? Only if I want to kite npc's beyond their effective range... Otherwise you're prolly gonna be in optimal, with a big fat sig radius thanks to that MWD being on. "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" |

So in your opinion, come screaming in close with MWD, turn it off, orbit and open up with the blasters? ------------------------------------ -Shadrin Nominated for "Mr. I Think I'm Way Too Tough For My Own Thorax 2005"

i used to fit one on my slasher till some guy in a tempest busted me making a break for the gate. an AB is better for running away I guess. Of course slasher is paper thin
I use mwd on my tackling ships, but not on any of my fighters. Either I start close enough, or forgetaboutit. But I fly Minmatar ships and it don't hurt us much to be in falloff. ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

Before Exodus came out, I did all the lvl 3 missions in my Blasterax. In live space, the MWD is needed to get in quickly. While you fly in, you do take more damage. Hopefully the shields absorb most of that. Once you get in, you orbit VERY close and blasterz0r them and drone them killing stuff very quickly. A lvl 3 Mordus mission is a good challenge in a Blasterax, and quite doable. You just need to orbit the last cruiser of each wave to build cap back up. :p
Sadly with the addition of deadspace into missions, the bonus of the MWD has gone to much waste. Makes me sad.
So the point of the MWD is you take more damage, but you also go very fast, so hopefully you're not taking "more damage" for too long as you close in.

Thats pretty much it. Best thing to do really is to MWD and approach the target, not orbit right off the bat. Then switch off your MWD right as you slam into the target, activate your web and quickly set your orbit as you bounce off. Usually this will put you right in orbit range. Practice it a few times to get the hang of it, and to make sure you're not getting bounced too far off.

Surely the downside to that is zero transversal on the approach? One of the advantages of going straight to orbit is that you come in at an angle and are thus not a sitting duck - with a divide-by-zero angle on approach, even a battleship can hit you no problems. Unless it's running NT, of course.

I use an AB on my NPC hunting frigates (even my crusader), and I'd never fly straight at an enemy... with a MWD on, going straight at a cruiser, and perhaps even a BS, you'd get a couple of wrecking hits right off the bat, which could mean certain death... alway approach things in a decaying orbit, no matter how big or small, and you'll see you can take far tougher spawns (counts for humans too though)
