Attack on Titan. That thing is 60m tall and its in a near post apocalyptic medieval Europe. Last stand city, you know the setup. Seems like one of the main charecters is a novelty as they are the last known Oriental in the world (direct quote) so yea, humanities nearly extinct and apparently must taste nice.... The Titans other than that one are smaller and... bizzare, think 10m tall middle aged men that are autistic and like chewing on people to spit them back out again (they can't actually digest them). Its about the mid 9th century so yea.... its dark and I suspect that they are all going to die.

Watching anime based on school life or everyday life makes me sad Makes me kind of regret the days I spent inside the library reading Stephen Hawkings and Nature.... They had a childhood , mine ended when I was 16.....
Oh .. how life plays tricks on you. I've never went to camping with my friends , I've never been to the beach with them , I'm not sure if I can even call them friends .... they were more like colleagues......... sad .. just sad...
If its a Harem based anime , its even worse.... BOYS SCHOOL GAWDDAMNIT!!! I had to walk around in the shower making sure I don't drop the soap while having to force myself to workout so I won't look like a wimp while the protagonists in Harem anime automatically gets chicks even if he's a worthless carthage with no skills whatsoever and have to keep on having the women bail him out time and time again ... while finally having her end up falling in love with him....
Sad... just sad |

The early stuff is generally dark, dystopian & post apocalyptic part of the inspiration for that darkness is Hiroshima & Nagasaki and the military occupation bases
The later stuff, to me, is just eastern cartoons. people instead of talking rabbits and coyotes

Spirited Away is one of my all time favorites, not just regarding Anime, but regarding films in general.
I must say I haven't explored some of the more obscure things (yet - it's on my list, I'm taking notes from this thread, though I have little time for watching films lately), but aside from the Hayao Miyazaki stuff, which I grew up watching since I was 4, and other things mentioned on this thread (in particular Ergo Proxy and Cowboy Bebop struck a special chord with me), recently I greatly enjoyed Colorful, , and Paprika: two films I knew nothing about, but picked up at the store looking for some preconception-free experiences, and indeed I was very pleasantly surprised with both.
Edit: oh, also recently caught on TV the Trigun movie, though I hadn't watch the series or read the manga before, greatly enjoyed that one too. |

Dessau wrote:If you liked this one, I recommend Planetes.
I second Planettes, most enthusiastically!
If you like human drama, and the drama of space exploration, then I recommend Space Brothers. You follow the lives of two brothers as they grow up following their dreams to become Japanese Astronauts. You get to see them as adults following their passion to become astronauts. NASA (and I think JAXA) provided technical expertise and advice as this show was done. So, you get to see what the NASA astronaut selection and training process is like. It is a very uplifting show to watch (uplifting - space exploration - pun not intended).
If you like graphic horror, then I recommend Attack on Titan. I started watching, not expecting much, but it is a very engrossing story. It's an excellent show, but very tragic. Expect heartbreak, and dread. This show does NOT pull punches. Watch this space.-á New exciting signature in development. |

Im quite the cyberpunk buff. Can you recommend some good cyberpunk anime?
I did a google search but its just lists with no context.

Armitage III is a pretty good anime short series with some cyberpunk in it, although it's a bit more pure sci-fi. Angel Cop also has some strong cyberpunk elements, but it's also got super powerful psykers running around so it's a bit of a mixed bag. |

And it have that overall too short feel to it. http://i.imgur.com/1N37t.jpg

I'm taking a film course this semester, and the text was pretty quick to categorize all/most stories into a handful of basic storylines
one of them being the 'god figure' ... i.e. an unlikely hero with odds stacked against them, who turns out to be the only one who can save their friends/family/town/country/world....
I like those anime... Bleach, Naruto, Gundam... though, now that I see it's all the same story at a basic level, it's more of a guilty pleasure than ever. Considering the success of the first two seasons, this one seems to be quite underestimated. Its style is different from the previous two installations, however, but it stays true to the manga. Forum-unbanned since 2011.10.20.

Anyone not watching Uchouten Kazoku this season is officially on my "people I would push away from the lifeboat if we were all on a ship and it sunk and I got to the lifeboat first" list. It's nothing personal. Well...in reality it is, but don't hold it against me.
The fall season is almost here and I believe a few shows have already started airing. I picked up Diabolik Lovers (for now) and it's a *very* cliche reverse harem/vampire anime. More than that though, it's like...eerily kinda really "rapey." Like...a lot. I almost want to suggest it to everyone because of how creepy it is. It's like Twilight except the *entire cast* spends the entire time discussing how much they want a piece of the main heroine. |

Just in case that it's been missed in this thread, I can only suggest looking for & watching the 2 OVAs + 110 glorious episodes of Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
I suggest starting here (fan made playlist with preview spoilers removed).
