How far off do you guys think we are from a game with Eve's depth and size having fully pilotable ships ? I know there are ALOT of issues to deal with in the way of hardware limitations and bandwidth. Currently 'Pilot' skills are not really a factor at all in this game...its all about equipment management and tactics. Those aspects are great, but just ingaine jumping in a frigate and weaving in and out of an asteroid belt for cover, or in and around a station.

I don't think it's possible for a game on the scale of Eve. Maybe one day.
I wouldn't mind an Eve-like clone on limited servers with flight-sim like controls. I could go for a kind of Eve Lite combat game for a quick blast every so often.
Maybe multiplayer Elite IV will fill a gap.

Hehe, someone doesn't rememebr the days of hiding behind asteroids to avoid the missiles. Anyway, ships in eve are supposed to be more along the lines of a naval ship than a fighter jet. The smaller frigates are about the size of a 747. Battleships you are looking at a scale in km. The fact that they are as pilotable as they are is awesome. And Truth on the inty thing. ------------------ Silver Night Director - Production and Science Help the State, Make tens of millions! The Summi |

Honestly the best "Space Sim" I've seen with pilotable (via joystick) ships is Star Trek: Klingon Academy. And it's a few years old now. It was created as a sequel to Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which was ancient...even tho they forced the dev team to use the old undocumented engine from SFA they managed to make KA rather decent. If you've seen the Enterprise vs Scimatar(sp?) fight in Star Trek Nemesis...that's INCREDIBLY close to what KA is like, and the game came out first.
It has netplay, and it does alright if you have a decent connection. People have modded it a lot, which adds to replay value...good story in it too, kinda a prequel to Star Trek VI...

Ahh come on guys. Best free flight space sim gotta be FreeLancer. I know a lot of the gameplay sucked big time, but the flying part was awsome.

You must have never played Tie Fighter, man THAT was a great space combat sim. Its a shame lucasarts just sells off the rights or makes crappy SW games, cause its about time for a revamp of the old great X-wing series.

Oh yeah, TIE Fighter was sooooooooooo great ! I past all my childhood on it with X-Wing too ! But if they revamp them, please I don't want to be able to kill a Star Destroyer with my own ship... It was so easy ;)

X-Wing and TIE Fighter (T/F especially) are the real space flight sim classics in my opinion. The later X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance added even more to it. ------------------------- CEO of The Establishment |

mmm... how about a first person in-ship environment? I know we're supposed to be in a clone and all, but imagine if we get lonely and walk around in our huge ships and errr... shoot at things while on long hauling missions. Or at least some fp element in station? Would be ace

I-War: The edge of Chaos was IMO the best one out there, looked awesome, was realistic and very intense.
For space blasters, then Freespace one and two just has to be the best in terms of story, I remember getting blown away by the Shivan uber ships making a sun go supernova at the end.
For an immersive story nothing has come close I don't think.

What if a ship was brought out allowing this player control. Like a fighter. Very small and also few people will use them so server load is reduced!

way to make eve just uber:
make frigs like jets, also have em cruising them like that (joysticks etc.)
battleships and such sized ships, b able to walk around like in a 3rd person shooter, ur in a pod so ur controlling a drone form ur pod or something, just have lots of stations from which u give commands.
cruisers and such would have to b a half/ half thing betweent he scenarious described aboe.
and last but not least, make eve absolutely nonpredictable. missions and pvp shouldnt b 2 worlds, there shouldnt b a different between pvp and npc fitting.
player empires should b able to b createn, and b totally self sufficient with an specific amount of work.

Its funny you mention SWG:JTL, it seems at one patch SWG tried to copy Eve's mining in space, except its actually pretty cool being inside the mining ship while mining. Anyway not promoting SWG just the concept.

These men speak the truth.
For what it's worth, I don't think the original poster meant skills as in Interceptors or High Speed Maneouvring, just skill with a Joystick.
Mind you, an alternative might be the control system used in "Sid Meiers Pirates!". Won't go into it here, but it does seem to be pretty intuitive and could move over to an EVE-Like mini game.

It would be nice with some possible adjustments during battle. For example, the famous triangle with power distribution between weapons, resistance and engines. This way you could make adjustments and tradeoffs during combat, for example raise damage at the expense of speed and armor/shield resistance.
Today, there is not really that much you can do once you are in combat. Even in PvP (from what I have seen) its basically just to try and maintain optimal range and blast away.
Yesterday I fought 3 webbing tough frigates (kazka headquarters in cosmos) and one 75k rat at the same time. My topspeed was 24m/s. Believe me, there was absolutely nothing I could do except fire away, use shield booster and nos and hope it would be enough (which it was).

Aside from the M$ flight sims, which are too realistic, the best GAME flight-combat-sim is X-wing Alliance.

Unfortunately they are only dreams. making eve into some kind of CS in space is just plain stupid not to mention not worth the money at all for CCP. Other than that, things such as making joystick controled ships might be possible, considering all you need to do is have the joystick replace the mouse and act as if its moving the mouse and constantly double clicking, but to make it worthwhile by coding some kind of aiming system is proberbly too complicated for the moment.
As for walking around in stations, its proberbly too much for CCP to handle but then again, in Earth and Beyond you can do that. Not to say it can compare with EVE's graphics and gameplay but the idea was possible, or i think it is.

Edited by: Danton Marcellus on 17/09/2005 00:25:46 Different flight patterns accessible on shortkeys, allocating resources to different modules to get a short boost on them and being able to jettison fitted modules as well as cargo to obscure targetlocks or draw missiles would be great.

The proof that of just how badly Jumpgate was marketed can clearly be seen in this thread.
To the people saying 'it cant be done yet', Jumpgate had free flight AND missiles with proper tracking/guidance. I'm not sure if its still going, but its at least 7 years old technology.
It had full inertia physics too. If piloting a cargo ship filled with an extremely dense ore, it would take ages to stop. I remember spinning my ship 180 degree and engaging full afterburner for brakes :) You manually docked and everything in jumpgate, it was a game of pure pilot skill.
How can such a great game have been missed by so many...
PS Is 'Jo Cool' the guy of same name from the old game? :)

Lol I remember playing Jumpgate... wasn't that from the same makers as Warbirds?
I still remember my first planetary landing with a cargo ship then mining the hell out of it. The people around me were like "WTF, how did you land without crashing?ö
Not to mention I was only like 12 at the time (and IÆm 21 now).
