I am sure it's mentioned somewhere however I couldn't spot it myself and its likely if I missed it then others will.
Please be aware for all those UK players thinking of ordering items from the store that if you use DHL delivery they will notify Customs & Excise of your order. If the total order cost exceeds ú18 excluding postal costs then your package becomes liable for VAT.
I wasn't expecting to receive a VAT bill for customs and excise from DHL to further push up the cost of my already rather over-priced goodies.
I am not moaning although I'm not too amused that I didn't spot the order didn't include VAT and I thought it fair to perhaps just warn people thinking of ordering anything in the near future.
When considering whether to spend ú20 on a T-Shirt or ú9 on a metal bottle opener etc. dont forget in addition to the circa $23 DHL charge you will get stung for an extra 17.5% bill a month or so later.

Wow, 43# for a T-Shirt. Ouch.
I wonder if it's the same coming to the U.S. What would that do to the price for a sub of EON? Or are publications dealt with differently? Go Fred! |

That can hardly be a factor limited to the Eve online store and as such generel online shopping information/knowledge.
Fair enough with warning though.

You are correct of course this is relevant to any online purchase you make whereby VAT is not paid by the supplier and whereby the goods are imported from outside the EU. I just felt it was perhaps worth mentioning as most people don't normally use DHL which is the issue here. Had I used the normal post it would have taken longer but I'd never get a VAT bill or never have on previous similar types of purchase however as DHL specifically grass you up to the customs chaps you're boned. (no offense to the DHL men who to be fair at least got my package here in super fast time and in one piece. If they opened it up they at least had the courtesy to repack it nicely )
VAT is Value Added Tax for those who asked.

yeah, it sucks, i got stung for ú30 on the eve fleece
they add a surcharge that i queried something like "freight value" or something, which to me read as "shipping and handling" i asked them for a copy of the customs invoice they paid on my behalf and they never replied.
so i just didn't pay it. ~Vistilantus

Hold on, you're complaining that CCP didn't commit tax evasion for you? It's not a hidden charge but while they aren't legally required to, as far as I know, they should probably have prices listed excluding and including VAT, to save those importing the misfortune of forgetting to add it. Iceland doesn't have VAT. You should probably mail kieron about getting it added to the store or something. Would help more than a thread on the forum.

I may be wrong here since I don't live in the EU but I have visited. I was under the impression that if the purchase qualifies for a VAT and the vendor doesn't charge it then you are responsible for reporting it and paying it yourself.

Nope that's exactly what I'm not doing.
It's hidden in that it is not made clear (again it may well be in their somewhere but I didn't spot it) that the prices in the store when you switch to your own currency, don't include the VAT. They were expensive enough to make me think VAT was in there
And yes if it isn't in the Stores pages then switching to GBP currency should bring it up alongside the prices. As I said not a whinge, just hoping to save some other people the surprise of an unexpected HM Customs & Excise Bill.
If a Mod can poke Kieron with regards to this that would be nice.

Well if Iceland joined the EU you could just fill in a T2L form and pay no import vat/tax's.
Alas Iceland is not part of the EU - maybe CCP could have a distribution centre inside the EU and offer cheaper products ;).
Yes DHL will err grass you up, least the code in there systems generated nice reports a few years ago when i worked there - sorry ;(.
One MAJOR tip with regards to courrier deliveries of ANY kind. Dont sign the reciept fo delivery until you have checked the contents, or/and if your unable to do that to the level that your happy the contents are undamaged in ANY way then sign the docet also adding the wording "unchecked", this offers you some come back if indeed the product is damaged; But if you just sign it you are declaring that all is well and allowing the courrier to totaly wash there hands of any damage that may or may not be visable from a quick inspection. As with electrical/IT related stuff I would advise signing unchecked as a rule, costs you nothing to do.
Also once your items have been dispatched you should get from the sender the Airway Bill number, you are able to then track your delivery via the courriers website in many many cases, some may call this a tracking reference, but Airway Bill is the more common term used.
Well on the brightside you can prolly offset the VAT against your companies books if self employed and a clever accountant ;o).

Why not use a 3rd party based in Europe to sell/distribute their goods. I am sure there must be some firms out their who will do this for a cut in the sales.
As P&P could be reduced it may entice others to purchase the goods.

To answer a bunch of questions at once, I do not believe that the EVE Store mentions the possibility of VAT being applied by Customs. I've put a word in to the Store Manager and t20 to have that added to the check out system.
VAT does not apply to the US, only the EU. Orders going into the US should not have any taxes or import fees applied to them. Publications coming into the US are also free from taxes.
A 'pay per post' forum tax is an interesting idea. More beer money for the FanFest! Wait, Oveur would want his cut. On second thought, no forum tax.
