Been playin' for months now and I never really hear anybody saying a thing about these things. Not talking about the high end covert ops ones. Just the regular cloakers you can put on most ships. How well do they work? Do take you off the overview? Do they work against NPCs? Can you use them to get past gate campers? What about escaping from PvP? Any info would be appreciated

They have only one use, and that's making sure you won't be located once in a safespot. They have no other practical application.

my question is, does it actually cloak your ship(like when you come through a gate) or does it reduce your signature making you harder to detect/target

They function like the gate cloak. Hit the button, you disappear.
However, your effective movement speed will be very slow (interceptor f/ex goes at about 50-60ms while cloaked). You will also decloak when you try to warp and if you get within 2k of something.
The delay after uncloaking before you can lock, and the penalty to scan resolution the cloak incurs, effectively mean that if you uncloak to surprise an opponent, almost anything will have time to warp away.
Stealth Bombers get a speed bonus while cloaked so these are marginally more useful on one of those.

so if someone cloaks try to move within 2k of them and they'll pop out?

Edited by: Calian on 17/09/2005 06:32:21 You incure the scan resolution penalty even with them offline, correct? So while it's nice to stick one on in case you need a completely safe safe spot, you're still gimping your ship without even using it?

they might have a use for jumping solo freighters... otherwise, anything will get away before u can lock them (unless you BUMP)

I found a use for them in lvl 4 missions. When playing the role of sniper while the other gang member tanks once every so often something would go wrong and the main tanker would warp out. I have only damage and range mods with no defence so I just hit cloak. That leaves me in the perfect position to fire once the main tanker warp back.
Pressing decloak and not having to warp in, then fly back to optimal range was useful.
ItĘs the one limited use I found for it. I had more before the auto target module got broken.
Well the other use is when I am 60km+ away from rats and I have to go afk just hit cloak.

Personally I think that logistics ships should be allowed to do their thing while cloaked. That would certainly make them a more viable and useful component of a fleet.

they do have afew other purposes espially on missions and complexes in complexes you can cloack and go afk waitingf or the level to respawn, sometimes in missions it lands you right in the middle of a large spawn thats hard to take out because your so close and they do lots of damage so you warp in and cloack and travel out to your optimal range, it is slow but it has stopped me failing a few missions.

If you try to warp, it no longer decloaks your ship and does not let your warp until you decloak.
I use the Imp Cloak II a lot, Stealth Bomber uses it, and I use it on other ships.
You probably don't hear much about other uses, because they are not exactly uses everyone is just going to come out and tell you about. Cloaks are a covert operations module...and using them in clever ways gets you some nice results.

Hmm.. So we just place 3-4 Logistics somewhere in space and repair one ship ( say scorpion with 8DG inv fields).
There is NO way to find those logistics and no way to kill the scorp. Ideal gatecamp :P

If you're locked, you can't cloak, so they're far better at avoiding it in the first place - at the cost of having to be incredibly patient sometimes. Originally by: Calian Edited by: Calian on 17/09/2005 06:32:21 You incure the scan resolution penalty even with them offline, correct?
Yes.

I've escaped a couple of solo gatecamps in my iteron mk4 before because of my cloak. Basically, you cloak before the guy gets a lock on you, align with something arpable, decloak and hit "warp". It means you will be targetable for at least a couple of seconds less than if you had just hit "warp" from the gate cloak.
There has been one PvP suggestion that I think could work. Have a gang of 5 or 6 cloaked interceptors (I know the taranis is good for this because of its spare high slot). When something big and juicy like a battleship arrives, the whole gang moves towards it under the cloak. When each person is 2000m away from it, they will automatically decloak and they can turn on their ABs. If the bumpage is done right, the battleship will not be able to warp away. After the locking penalty has elapsed, you can orbit close and open fire. Hopefully the battleship will still not have achieved a lock on you because you didn't use MWDs.
