For those that don't know (and should be ashamed if you don't ), Starcraft was the first known RTS that changed the usual 2-6 races with same units but different colors/names (and sometimes 1-2 different units) with 3 totaly different races. Now, most mmorpg's used to go after the rock/scissors/paper concept translated into Mage kills Fighter kills Rogue kills Mage (and we all know a lot of fantasy mmorpgs have the roots in D&D). And I am wondering , since Eve is like: small ship, medium ship, big ship ; what was the vision in the beginning (since battleships were supposed to be rare ) , mass of frigates duke it out (a la StarWars) while cruisers offer fire/logistics/EW support and battleships are the behemots that destroy one target at a time?

no frigate can "pwn" a dominix/ishtar, unless said dominix/ishtar is unfitted or the pilot is afk (with drones in bay )

Anyone remember the video of the Bestower killing the interceptor? Anyone?
Quintessential EVE, right there. ---
Is this a constructive thread? |

That was one interesting video, and I like the fact that anything is deadly. It just depends on how well you know the craft you pilot.

I think that if you were going to compare eve to RTS's of the era you'd have to compare it to Total Annihilation. Starcraft didn't have that many units... TA had several hundred (only two sides though). TA had so many different units that it was hard to figure out exactly what kind of force your opponent would be using, and what you needed to counter it. This would be fairly analogous to Eve - between the dozens of different ships across different races, theres literally thousands of different ways to fit ships - and you never know EXACTLY what you're up against, even sometimes in the heat of battle! (tracking disrutpors are fun :))

Not realy and this is my point, in any other MMO you would not be able to hit the dominix at all, not even once.
In EVE #'s, groups, setups & conditions etc... matter too.
And there is always a chance.
Even my Scout can get through and has many times gotten past a fleet of huge Pirate ships, with a bit of skill and tactics of course.
Yeah they would hit me and other time kill me, but it is not so easy hitting a small ship.
And I can still get my mission done, being a success.
But I'm sure you know all this.

said dominix could still be wtfpwned even if it has a drone filled with combat drones but just doesn't use them cuz the pilots like "omfg im being pwned by frigs" and don't deploy them =P

Dao 2, if you are not joking, it's sad. You probably never watched how 100 zerglings and 48 hydras get owned byt 12 zealots and 12 templars. Sure, Stracraft was a bout masses.......
Anyway, what I meant with this topic, it's not a comparision between Eve and Starcraft per say, the main question is, can Eve be considered for the MMO genre what Starcraft was for the RTS genre? Because like I said, before we had rock/scissors/paper and high level owns low level, now we have small/medium/big but severals smalls own a medium, several mediums own a big, lot of small own a big, I mean you get the picture: many combos available.

Dawn of War > Starcraft
But I don't think you can compare Eve to a fantasy mmo. It's like comparing Planetside to Eve, they're totally different games even if they're both multiplayer persistant worlds.

Total Annhilation > Starcraft
Nothing like wiping out your opponents air fleet with massed flak ships. Or sending a bunch of scouts in as cannon fodder while your bombers own their base.
With max unit limit set to something funny like 100k++ it killed the Gig-e switch we were using :P

100 zerglings with defiler darkswarm backup = ownage
that crux of the matter is, no matter what you use to fight whatever enemy in whatever game (be it MMO or otherwise), intelligent usage of the resources at your disposal is what gets the win.

My favorite RTS of all time was Outpost 2, there was so much more strategy involved in that game than almost any other RTS I've played. Especially the research trees, advanced units and buildings didn't just require you to build some other thing first, they required you to build something AND complete research. Huge learning curve but once you got the hang of it the multiplayer games were in a league of their own.
First 5 minutes of any multiplayer game was non stop clicking as everyone found a place to set up their base (preferably near a rich ore mine), went through their build sequence and research trees... only 2 races but unique units to each. Plymouth could build a spaceport and launch EMP missiles that disabled any units in an area, then send Spiders in to reprogram the disabled vehicles and capture them. Eden had Thors Hammer tanks that absolutely raped things with bolts of electricity. 3 vs 3 games went on for 3 or 4 hours sometimes.
Many good times were had on that game, horrible horrible single player but damn fun multi. _____________________________________
