I was just wondering if the devs have any plans to move to DX9 and re do the gfx using shaders etc...?

As far as I know, eve uses dx9. ------------------ Silver Night Director - Production and Science Help the State, Make tens of millions! The Summi |

which it does as I recently reinstalled and it told me it would'nt run unless I upgraded to dx9.

Ah ok... well at beta i'm sure it used dx8... well, guess that answers my q...
So heres another one...
Will CPP make better gfx for people with better computers?
Like, not gloating, but I have an a64 with 1.5gb of mem and a 7800gtx...
I know theres alot of people who have the same sort of specs yet there is nothing for us :S

The problem with better graphics is they need to be toggleable, preferably without rebooting the client. Those fancy high res textures will look amazing when you're flying about, but in a fleet battle involving dozens of ships it's going to take a big hit even on a top end machine. Unless your computer can render a 40 ship fleet with drones out firing on a station with no graphical lag it's not going to do well with high res textures in any kind of large scale fleet battle.
I don't imagine any high res stuff will be out until some time after Kali, so lets give it a Soon™ _____________________________________

1. EVE has been DX9 for a long time. It also uses some shader technology.
2. Devs have already mentioned that they can make or have hi-res textures. I imagine they'll add the option eventually.

High res textures would be an awful big download if it were mandatory. -==- Holy-Jim> as you know, surprise is the key to victory.....surprise! LooseCannoN> ahh! LooseCannoN> my plans have been foiled! |

Fixed textures > High Res textures first........ no point having high res textures when there are still bugs with the originals. I'm all up for it however once they fix the bugs.

Didnt the original Gemini cd release ship with DX9 on the disc?

DX9 on the disc doesn't mean it was programmed with DX9

AFAIK EVE uses DX8 shaders and tech. They made the move to DX9 shortly before release, but i don't think they actually use DX9 features yet.

That's what I thought.
Reason I bought this up is there is going to be a major client update. Faster client etc, is it going to be DX9 or what?
Eve has had a good run on its current engine, I personally think it's time for an overhual...

Pffftth. Eve still looks utterly fantastic.

Get a clue. New engine does not mean faster. In fact it will probably mean slower as we will lose all the optimizations. And you rarely ever write a new engine, you just bolt the latest graphics tech on to a new one. Which CCP are already doing.
But they are not going to spend tons of effort improving graphics for the one in a thousand who has more money then sense and two 7800GT's in SLI. In fact I would bet that most eve players have a Geforce 4 MX or equivalent.
EVE already looks damn good for how well it runs. And thats the important bit. I would turn off all the graphics and models for some less lag in combat.

I would think that the turret and effects overhaul in Kali will be addressing this to some extent. The Devs have said that a lot of that code is very old. Bear in mind eve development started waaaay back. Even though DX9 was released, there was very little hardware out there that properly suppored the DX9 shaders etc. One of the great innovations of the graphics engine at the time was that they had created their own custom shader systems. This helped give eve graphics that were really stunning compared to what else was out there at the time.
Unfortunately, it also meant that these routines did not make full use of DX9 and the potential to hardware accelerate them. Which is why disabling the effects has such a large performance impact, and is far more CPU-limited than GPU-limited.
Overhauling the effects rendering to make use of DX9-compliant hardware acceleration will primarily be for reasons of performance gain. Sure, we'll likely lose the optimisations wringed from the old code, but shifting the load from CPU to GPU should more than make up for that.
Of course, the switchover will also have some effect on the appearance of the graphics. But I would think that the change would be more a subtle difference, rather than a huge leap, if only because it makes little sense to go overboard on effects that are so good they look out of place next to the textures, models etc. Hopefully it will get rid of certain anomalies like the appearance of the star of planes whenever your camera moves "inside" a particle stream effect (engine trails are particularly good at demonstrating this).
You can do anything. But you can't do everything. |

It certainly does use DX9 shaders. Note the mysterious lack of some effects working like planet rings on TI4200s... -- Proud member of the [23].

Just because it uses them some places, doesn't mean it uses them everywhere
I would think turret-shooting effects were developed earlier than pretty planetary-ring effects, for example.
