I just started playing the game yesterday, and I'm wondering if there are any 'best' race/attribute distribution combinations. I don't really know what the end game of EVE looks like, or what I'd like to do, but I don't want to learn as I go working on a character that will turn out to be gimp ;)
Right now I'm a caldari soldier with all my points in perception/willpower. I am generally a pvp oriented person, so it seemed like a good idea. However, I seem to get the impression that the best way to make money is through mining etc, which focuses on entirely different stats.
Do most people have multiple characters (in other mmo's people often have pvp characters then pve 'bots' to support their pvp characters) or do they just play one character and try to maintain a balance? Should I try to skill up a pve character (focusing on mining, refining, and started with the appropriate attributes) and do a pvp character on the side, or is it best just to use my pvp-oriented character for pve despite his poor attributes?

Int and Perception are the most importnt, followed by Memory.
Then Willpower, and Charisma is by far the worst of all

science/learning go caldari deteis = highest memory and decent intel start, then train the advanced learning soon as convenient.
Minmatar brutist is best perception/willpower conbo in game and will train gunnery and spaceship operations the fastest with minimal learning skills...just plan on painful learning experience when you learn the advanced up.
stay away from high charisma characters. not worth it currently.

So you would roll one of each of those? One for pve and one for pvp?

Perc, then intel, willp/mem
PvE and PVP is both "fighting" so you should be fine. It's just if you want to do science/ trade or mining that the bias needs to go more towards intel/mem

Caldari Deteis are a good base for balanced characters, same for Matari Sebestiors.
Just try to get high int/perc and decent mem/will --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would prefer Caldari Civire for good attributes. You could start with a base of: Intel: 8 Perc: 10 Char: 6 Will: 7 Mem: 8
Then with Learning 5, Advanced Learning all at 4 and +3 implants you will get: Intel: 22 Perception: 24 Charisma: 19 Willpower: 20 Memory: 22
And these will probably be the attributes for the entire carreer and I like those

Overall the skills of importance are:
1. memory 2. perception 3. intelligence 4. willpower 5. charisma
Memory/Intelligence are important for all learning, science and lots more skills.
Perception is mostly important on everythign regarding weapons and ships.
Imho Amarr is still the best race, as it just offers a real low charisma on true Amarrians, thus having attribute points in all other four attributes. For a headstart, I would recommend as high your memory as possible, with perception a close second. For Amarr this wont be an easy choice, as willpower always pops up ;)

ok.. if i remeber correctly.
willpower primary skills = leadership perception primary = gunnery, space ops intel primary = learning, electronics, engineering(just winging it) charisma = social skills memory primary = science
forget what trade is-- thinking charisma forget what industry is.
basicaly decide if your gonna be a fighter pvp or mining, manufacturing, pve, support roles.

Willpower is also primary for the tech2 ships command and few trade skills

Unless you plan on specializing in leadership skills, charisma should normally be the lowest.

To answer the second question. I would say that many long time players have multiple accounts/characters although it isn't required. Combat charactors can also make a reasonable amount of isk to support a pvp habit by killing npcs, either agents, complexes or 0.0 belts.

I ended up doing a caldari deteis, though in retrospect I feel like the Amarr might have been a better choice because they have fewer 'wasted' points in charisma. If I end up playing the game I'll probably get a couple more accounts and then I guess I'll have a chance to do it again ;)

Here is your order of importance. 1) Perception 2) Intel 3) Willpower 4) Memory 5) Charisma
If you're going production or science, swap 3 & 4.

Sure you will get a headstart with high perception for gunnery, missile and spaceship command skills as a fighter. You can reduce skills that need perception as primary if you specialize on one race only. I think there is no best race/bloodline. You can balance your attributes very well for all bloodlines, I think. So choose the race you prefer to roleplay or because of their ships. In the end it's up to CCP to balance all races / ships and they will do it.
If you want to play eve not only for a few months but for a long time then you might want to train some drone or engineering skills with memory as primary attribute or some electronic (warfare) or navigation skills with intelligence as primary attribute.
My advice: try to keep memory, intelligence, perception and willpower on same level. Willpower is often a secondary attribute and primary for tech 2 ships and leadership skills.
The only attribute that seems to be not that much usefull is charisma but I suppose ccp will implement more charisma based skills. Maybe one day your charming smile level 5 will prevent pirates to attack you.
