Edited by: Zothecae on 19/09/2005 22:34:40 Lets see, were to start.. I guess I should start with the obvious? I am running: gforce FX 5200, nforce 2 mobo, amd athlox xp 2500+, 512m pc3200 ram.
Ok so, here is my problem. When certain types of structures or stations come into view, the screen just stops, nothing happens for 15-30 seconds, then the screen goes black. A second later the screen comes back on, its running at 640x480, 16 colors and there is a nice message box telling me the video card/driver failed and I should save my work and restart asap. I have tried 3 different drivers, completely reinstalled windows, everything I can think of.
Im not sure why only certain objects would cause this to happen, other than maybe a faulty video card. Is there ANYTHING I can do that would fix the problem, other than shelling out money that I dont have to get another video card?
-Edit- Due to this problem, I cant log onto my main character, as soon as I do, the crash happens.. Lovely eh? Guess I gotta start an alt and petition it so he can move my character away. |

The early line of gfx cards had some problems.
First try setting all your graphic solutions to minimum.
If that does not work, try google for an old dstabil driver for your card, or go into the Nvidia forum, and ask your question there.

I'm having a similar problem when I play on my laptop, but it only happens when theres an explosion on screen. Has anyone found a fix for this problem?

I have tried several different drivers, including old ones.. Nothing has yet to help.. I wasnt having this problem before, it only seemed to happen after I replaced my video card fan with a better one.. Strange... the average GPU temperature is lower than it was before, but its performing worse?

Several factors come to mind:
1) New fan is drawing more electricity then the old one, thus lowering electricity available to the card.
2) As physics state: electricity travels faster through warmer metals, then through cooler ones. So my cooling down your video chip to much you may have introduced some timing problems.

I had various problems with my FX5200 until nVidia released newest drivers (if I remember - 78.01) - with previous drivers screen was looking TERRIBLE - only latest drivers corrected this problem...

You might want to reread your sources on that one.
First of all, its not a measure of speed. Its a measure of resistance. The hotter it gets, the more resistance plays a factor and slows the component. The more electricity applied to try and increase the speed, the hotter it gets because of resistance. Its a catch 22.
If it wasn't for resistance converting the energy (electricity) into heat, the limits of speed would be endless. If what you had said was true, everyone would make there proccessers and video cards run at there max heat tolerences (approx. 185 degrees F.) but they dont because the cooler your component is, the more electricity you can introduce to it therefore increasing the speed at which it runs. In the near future once we perfect superconduction, computers as we know it now will look like speak & spells.
Sorry about the ramble. I couldnt log on to Eve, so I had nothing better to do.

I am having the same exact problem as the original poster. The only way I have been able to temporarily work around it (to log in) is to face the back of the ship so that the station you autowarp back to that caused the crash never has to load.
This only happens to me when I warp to certain stations. The stations I frequent never cause a problem, but as soon as I warp to a station I don't use often, my computer has a stroke.
I am using a 2 year old video card and I am almost certain that is the problem. I just wanted to share my $.02 on a temporary fix for those having the same issue.

I too am having a problem with my gfx. I have a Sparkle GF5500. What happens to me is the screen freezes, and displays red lines that "shimmer" from top to bottom of the screen. Other times the screen goes blank and the monitor goes into standby, indicating a loss of signal (and yes I checked the cable to make sure it was in!). Other times I get the same "the video driver has caused an error and was stopped" or something to that effect. I did have a GF 4200Ti before and had no problems with the same nvidia drivers. Upgrading to a GF 6600GT, will have to let you know what happens there!!!!

Edited by: Xevion on 22/09/2005 13:36:38 Well, I seem to not be the only one.. I formatted and installed windows 2000, now instead of a complete hardware crash, the FPS just drops to 1 or 2, and the screen looks scrambled.. it goes away once I turn the camera to not face the object causing the problem.. Anyone else have any ideas I can try out? (Aside from a new video card, seeing as I have $1.50 to my name at the moment)
Oh yeah.. Xevion = Zothecae = Xothecae >.>

It's a shame the game doesnt allow you to disable the effects completely(ie shaders) or run in software mode almost as a way to get around things that are causing problems.

Well I figured out the problem. I had to go into the video card options and turn off antialiasing. Since then, there havent been any problems. Thanks for the feedback!
