I have yet to be ransomed once by these so called "pirates." All I have seen is murderers and griefers. Every time ive been killed by a low sec, they dont ransom they just blow my ship, rifle through my loot can and fly off. Not even any chat except the occasional epeen "I own you" or some other similarly stupid comment.
Ive seen these people asked why didnt they ransom instead of blowing the ship. The typical answer is "for a laugh" or something similar.
Pirates... yea right.
A pirate that ransoms i could respect for playing an Ingame role.
These killers and griefers are just losers getting kicks from trying to cause harm.
This game is great, you can do whatever you want above or under the law... but in any society in the known world if there is mass murder/property destruction going on, the authorities of whatever type after a while usually ***** down hard.

At this point, this really doesn't deserve it's own thread, it's been beaten to death so many times. What is the point of this thread anyway?

You have to remember, it may not be worth the Pirates time to ransom you:
I tend not to ransom if:
The guy if flying a tech 1 frig, cruiser or a hauler. They're only a few months old and probably don't have the money. I think they're fitted with loot worth more than the ransom. They have lots of friends in local. There are lots of hostile looking people in local. They're rude in any way etc

Ikvar said it, there is no reason to ransom anything worth less than 30 mil. Frigs are hard to catch, so ganking them is the only way to achieve satisfaction from them, and cruisers are so cheap they are better target practice if anything. Haulers are so cheap they're not worth ransoming either, and if they are carrying something it is easier to just blow it up and hope it survives, as no hauler would ever admit to a pirate they are hauling 50 mil worth of Vitoc. Harsh, yes, but if you wanna be ransomed instead of ganked, fly something expensive, and be prepared to pay dearly to keep it. A battleship is optimal.
Also, I'd like to know how many regions you've been attacked in. If it is just one place, then you're probably only talking about a specific gang of griefers that are in no way pirates.

Real world pirates used to force ships to smash to pieces on rocks so that they could loot the remains.
So how is blowing people up and looting thier cans not pirating again? -------------

You only ransom if there is no one else out there, and the pilot is revealed to have been playing for a long time.
As far as pod-killing goes... well... I'm just thankful they're doing it in a game, and not real life.
Rule of thumb is... avoid the low security systems that have less than 3 ways out. Especially when you see these systems with more than 5 pod kills in the last hour.
Otherwise... prepare to be boarded!

Edited by: Haitchi Allamut on 22/09/2005 14:28:21 I dont really know what definition you use for "pirate". But if we go to the old real pirates, do you really think they stop by their prey and told them to kindly pay a ransom? No. My definition, and oddly enough the correct one, is that a pirate is a person who profit on other players through violence. But as said b4, this subject has been beaten to death b4 on these forums and to go trough the same old rant about what a pirate is or is not is just silly.

Ugh.. another pirate bashing session. Did someone gank your precious hauler or whatnot? Just because you have never met one of em doesnt mean they dont exist. Just chill and remember.. losing ships is natural.. be it to NPC's or players or heck.. even out of your own stupidity.

...Guess you'll be wanting NPC pirates to ransom next.. oh and maybe Concord should start a toll fee for passing through high sec... oh, I know, what about having in game 'No Win, No Fee' law firms to deal with your claims for damages if you get popped or sprain your wrist because you where too busy with Playboy whilst mining...?
I think half this forum is filled with this same trhread over and over again. Deal with it, fly safe in low sec or just dont fly here at all. This is OUR space, empire is YOUR space, you choose where to be so dont complain when your enemy b*tchslaps you in their space, YARR!

Quote: Modern definitions of piracy include the following acts:
* Kidnapping of people for ransom * Robbery * Murder * Seizure of items or the ship * Sabotage, resulting in the ship subsequently sinking
The offering of a ransom is a act of kindness completely aside from piracy which a good deal of us offer regardless. If we've kidnapped you, robbed you, murdered you, stole your ship, or blew it up for the hell of it.. we've still pirated you. --------------

And here all of those pirates I've read about in numerous history classes, you know the ones who attacked merchant ships, killed everyone, and took what they wanted/could, were what real pirates were like.
Good thing you're here to let us all know pirates are suppose to follow some code of honor like a knight or samurai would.
The only time pirates ever ransomed someone was when they were worth the time (ie: royalty or high nobility, or a rich merchant). I'm going to take a wild guess that you don't fit any of those 3 criteria. Besides, just because YOU haven't been ransomed, doesn't mean they're all like that, and as for 'griefing', shut the **** up. There are too many people already who think pirating in any form = griefing. It's not.

Yep, simple as that, imho. Piracy is the only excitement in the game, where at least occasionally it's something more exciting than 'blob for the win' which is the sole boring point of 'ethical' combat, as far as I'm concerned.
I have fun and get to watch lots of cool explosions - and that's why I'm paying CCP money every month

75% of the time, we are in a fleet of 1-4 smaller ships, and we are killing someone who has 10 corpmates in local. Time is of the essence.
Otherwise we might ransom (see Ikvars conditions). _______________________________________________
