I have a similar problem with my laptop, after the splash screen dissapears my laptop locks up.
The game was working fine the other day, and I haven't consciously changed anything

Edited by: Kleintje Pils on 28/09/2005 13:33:14 Most likely your graphics card is not compatible with eve. See this LINK to check comp-list.
Known graphics cards that dont work with eve are:
ATI Radeon VE ATI Radeon U1 ATI Radeon 7000 Diamond Viper II Z200 Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 Intel Extreme Graphics Onboard Intel chips, such as the Intel740, the Express 3D Graphics Card, and the 82830M/82815/82810/82845G/82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controllers Voodoo 3 3000 Voodoo 5 5500 Voodoo4 4500 Riva TNT/TNT2 Matrox Millenium - G400 & G450 S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR SiSŤ 650/740 Graphics Controller

Seems to be from a change in the graphic driver settings of the monitor driver and the EVE graphic display options. I encounter the black screen after changing some resolutions on my desktop (2 monitors). After updating the driver to their latest (ATI FireGL 3100), I still got the black screen. Then I removed the pc.dat file from my EVE/cache/Settings folder and restarted the game. Viola! login screen.
Removing the .dat files from the Settings folder seems to help fix a lot of things for me (another in particular is the multiple entries of the same location from Agent missions in my Address Book. Just remove the char*.dat files and user*.dat files and the glitch goes away for a while.

Definately seems to be something in the settings file.
I had a similar problems using a mates pc while on holiday.
I'd copied the settings folder into cache which seems to have caused the problem. Once I'd deleted it, no problems.
It seems that the latest patch doesn't like the earlier settings folder, if you just copy them over.
I'm not sure if this helps the OP, but the settings folder seems to be the problem area.

Just had the same problem. Eve worked just fine last night. Today when I tried to play, I got the splash screen, and then nothing but a black window. The app was responsive, and responded to Alt-F4. I changed absolutely nothing on my system between my last play session and this attempted one.
Deleting the pc.dat file in the cache seems to have worked for me as well.

Had the same problem. After the inital splash screen I got a black box where the login screen should be. Deliting the pc.dat file in the place specified above sorted out the problem.
Nice fix, wouldn't have worked that out myself.
