Well I have been playing eve for 2 days and a bit now and im having a blast and hitting a few hurdles along the way.
Today has to be one of the worst days though, I bought my first destroyer today and it got destroyed by rats because I couldn't warp out quick enough.
I bought an industrial ship yesterday and that also got blown up today because it got stuck between asteroids and couldnt warp out.
I had 5k worth of ore stolen from my can by a pirate who then decided to taunt me in local chat trying to get me to attack him.
I mined for an hour and a half and had over 30k ore in my can only for it to go poof because nobody mentioned that cans only last for two hours.
Now im flying around in an egg that is slow and is detremental to my characters well-being. And all this happend in 0.6 space or above!
But even though i have been knocked around by the game mechanics of eve, i am getting more and more immersed in the game as I learn more and explore more.
Just wanted to share my unfortunate experiences with you.
Remember - Jettisoned cans only last 2 hours! Remember - dont fly your indy in between asteroids when there are rats about Remember - that your destoyer is slow to warp so warp out early Remember - flying round in an egg is no fun!

I am curious, how did you lose a Destroyer to .6 rats? I regularly fly my Merlin (frigate) around .7-.5 belts I have nevr lost a fight to belt rats. Also, if you are going to jet can mine, jet the can outside of the roid field and use the mining laser to reach in and get the ore. You may need to fly along the periphery of the roids to find a good angle to get the maximum exposure to the ore you want. If you have an indy, tow a secure can out and anchor it. This can be done easily in .6 space. No more worries about ore thieves. These will only allow you to put them no closer than 5000m from another object so they can be a bit frustrating to place.
Keep on pluging away. We all start off with a few bumps in the road. You may want to visit the Ships and Modules board to get some great ideas on how to best outfit your Destroyer.
Good luck!

Sorry to hear about all the problems so early in the game
The only thing I can say is... persist
There's a tremendous potential to this game and a lot of entertainment getting to where you want to be. Some hard ship (I've lost about 15 BS in the game so far) but a lot of fun
I'd recommend joining a corp as an easy way to avoid the very basic hurdles. Lots of us (definitely including GME are very helpful to new players.
Happy gaming

Consider your financial loss to be tuition on some valuable lessons.
I try not to buy something unless I can afford to lose it. Cash in the bank is the only persistent asset you have. Even skill points can get flushed.
Don't be in a hurry to spend up to the next biggest ship. Slow and steady wins the race and all that.

Well, that's a bummer of a start, but if you try to look on the bright side, you've learned a LOT about what not to do. The way I always try to look at things is that if you learned something from any encounter, then you've gained from the experience. Now you know what not to do in several circumstances, so you'll be better prepared for the future.

I think the real lesson is that destroyers are useless save up for a teir 2 cruiser like a Caracal. ------------------------------------- You are all worthless, and weak.

I wouldn't trust leaving a jet can in space for more than 40 minutes without recycling into a new can, but that's just me.

Edited by: Longasc on 24/09/2005 11:27:44 I still wonder how people who are new and have no money dare to leave 30k ore easy to steal in a jetcan. If it gets stolen, you lost a lot of time and money. :(
I always say, get some help. Someone you can trust. Makes complexes in frigates easier, mining less repetitive and a LOT faster and safer - and is much more fun, too!
I am a noob player, too, and I hope you enjoy the game. Right now I am a bit upset as I still have level 2 missions and my Battlecruiser is too much for them - and it will probably take ages to get level 3 missions... sigh! :(

Actually, it goes like this:
Remember - Jet cans have no set time limit. I've had one pop after 5 minutes and had one last 14 hours.
Remember - Mine at your maximum range from a rock but always have your max amount of targets in range. It gives you the room to maneuver without having to move when you pop a rock.
Remember - if you want to speed up your alignment, fit Inertial Stabilisers.
Can't argue with the Egg thing though
Hope this advice helps.

They do if you manage to do what I do.
Targeted my can for no real reason. then when 3 rats came into view.. I started targetting and fired my two missile launchers and my 4 medium drones when they first locked.
I still had the can selected. 21k m3 ore.. POOF.
Now that.. was a "ARSE!" moment.

Destroyers have an awful sig radius. Belt rats will almost always hit you, and your hull isn't strong enough to tank. To be honest you're probably better off in an agile frigate than a destroyer unless you already have good skills, and if you have good skills you might as well get a cruiser.

I lost my destroyer in a complex, about 15 rats came for me all at once and my destroyer is slow compared to them.
