It should have some modules (or something else) that make it able to recover destroyed ship debris (in form of minerals or metal scraps, or something...)
It could take space debris too; for example unrecoverable jettisoned ore (when you mine but have not enough cargo).

Just make them refine ships in space, all of them, even piloted one's.

I always thought it would be funny to be able to use mining lasers on enemy ships. You do damage to them while your hold fills up with metal scraps or something similar. That way barges could actually defend themselves. :)

How long before someone figures out that they can use reppers and go afk mining another ship for infinite mins

ever wonder where all that garbage comes from?! that would be awesome if you could turn your salvage module onto a wreck or something and get components and trade goods out of it :)

hrmm what if they had "asteroid belts" but made out of trash and wreckage according to how many ships were blown up in system or region. then you go out in your salvaging indy and "afk mine" it . but you get cool stuff instead of dumb ore!
ok after a bit more thinking,
trash = average pilots active in system
wreckage = ships destroyed in system
maybe even all those jet cans that explode when you dont touch them for a while. i dunno about you but im gonna start throwing trash out my ships window!

I want mining lasers to be usable on player ships. And mining drones.

I can see the big ass modulated strip miner off a mining barge shoot out and tear an apoc in half...That thing would kick the **** out of any gun :P
