I have setup my tempest for pure mining atm at would like opinions.
High Slot : 6 Miner II
Medium Slot : 100MN Afterburner, Magnetic Scattering I, Large Shield Extender I & 2 M51
Low Slot : 3 Co-processor I, 3 Expended Cargohold I
Drone Bay : Mixture of Vespa & Hammerhead
Question One : I can fit 1 Medium Shield Extender I and 1 M51 instead of 2 M51. Should I go for more shield or faster shield recharge rate?
Question Two : How do you calculate stacking of 2 shield recharger? Example M51 have 12% shield recharge rate, so is it 2 makes 24% on total or 12% * (12% * total)?
Question Three : Would appreciate if anyone have better setup for tanking rats on low sec while mining :)

IM not a miner... but
6 miner2, 2 assault missile launcers
100mn AB, 3 caprechargers, webber
1 large acomodation repairer, 3 hardeners(50%), 1 1600, 1 cap relay.
Medium drones.
This is twice as good as yours now.

Get a large mining barge or an Apoc or even better get a Moros!

If id fot it for mining id fit:
6x Miner II, 2x Assalut Launchers
5x 2nd best named or best named cap rechargers
1x Large Accomod, 4x Hardener, 1x Capacitor Power Relay/Med Armor Rep II(as a backup rep)

Why not it's his ship, he earned it and you can fit miners to it. You can't tell him what to do.

I armor tanked my tempest when I mined in 0.0. Something like 6 miners, assault launchers, web, cap rechargers, co-pro('s), large rep (or medium, can't remember), active armor hardeners.

and i actually saw a navy apoc mining in 0.9 a while back
i sooooo wanted to get about 20ppl together in kestrels and show him the error of his ways. but that would be griefing, and is bad. but it was tempting nonetheless

You didnt see me mining in a navy mega in yulai about 1.5 months ago?

Mining in Battleships is easily justified when you need to defend against rats, especially in 0.0. Plenty of times you have a few hours to kill, and no mates online atm. Should he just sit in station doing nothing when theres a way to mine solo, as to just not defile 'your' battleship? More to the game then ganking, some people like to build stuff, others blow it up. If you dont like one way, then dont do it. Just get in your tempest and show him what it can do.

Well to clarify :
I am intending to PVP/PVE one day. However I am going thru the mining stage first.
Second I have Scythe but I found that Tempest is better in yield+tanking wise.
Third : I have a barge on my other account who is more inclined to industrialist. So I see no point training this char to fly a barge while his goal ultimately is to pvp/pve. By training battleship instead of barge, I can either mine or pvp/pvp on it(bs).
Calculation based on (Mining 5, Astreology 5, Cruiser 4, BS 2) and using Miner II:
Scythe : 506.25 m3 Yield per minute
Tempest : 562.5 m3 Yield per minute
Scythe (With Cruiser lvl 5) : 562.5 Yield per minute
Tempest have more slots to fit for defence, Higher shield/armor and more drones slot. Scythe can only fit one medium drone.
In future I will get an apoc since it will be useful for me as well when I go for pvp/pve.

yeah geddon's are much better at tanking, minmatar ships aren't known for having the greatest of capacitors. If you have high skills you can do it though. I usually leave the tanking to other people.

6x Miner 2
2x Cruise Launchers
1x Roid Scanner
4x Cap Rechargers (named)
1x Med Armor repair II
2x Hardner (primary damage resist)
1x Hardner (secondary damage resist)
1x CPU II
1x Cargo Expander
Usually this will keep you armor tanked against 2/3 cruiser spawn indefiently allowing you to bring in other players in barges and haulers pretty much risk free in 0.0
Double harderns for the main damage type of the NPC spawns allows for a Medium repairer to be used which wont eat away at your cap as a large would.
If you have a mix of medium drones a miner drones you should pretty much be right for defense and additional mining. Of course as soon as a neutral/hostile pops into system its time to SS and wait them out or get into a combat ship :)
