Is it possible in EVE to travel between systems without using the jump gates? Could I use my warp/impulse (are they called impulse engines in EVE?) to go the entire way?
Just curious as to whether the systems are set up as separate zones.

Each system is it's own zone on the servers, and the only way to get to another zone is to use the jumpgates. If you just flew off, you'd either fly forever or eventually hit the zone boundary and stop. Also, it would take months to do it manually.

Here's a quick estimate of time to travel between gates in a solarsystem.
Assume that your ship can travel at 5 km/s (an inty or something like that). 1 AU is approximately 150 million km. Travelling 1 AU at 5 km/s takes 30 million seconds = 8333 hours = 347 days = close to a year. The distance between two gates in a system is usually many AUs so travelling between two gates would take many years. Also the distance between different solar systems is much longer that this so travelling without jumping would not be possible within reasonable time .

Good answer I like it.. I would not like to spend a year to go somewhere..

Yes, you an travel without using gates... its called pod jumping... set your clone to a distant system, and then exit the station and eject from your pad. You will wake up in the new system to where you set your new pod to be, just insure that your clone is up to date, and you dont have any implants...
