My first reaction to finding out about the intended changed for having to scan out ice fields is that this was CCP's brilliant idea to end bot mining of ice. It will be VERY difficult I imagine to write a macro for the scanning process. Of course - all this will do is send the bot miners back into the astroid belts.
I would like to offer a very simple method to finally end bot mining for once and ever.:
Require a "capcha" to be entered once inside an ice field or an astroid belt in order for the mining modules to be activated. I know - this is a pain in a way. But out here on Earth we have to do this all the time for silly stuff like enrolling in a on-line newsletter. If we could actually eliminate bot mining and its negative impacts on the economy I think it'd be worth having to enter 3 or 4 randomly generated digits. I am sure that the very creative minds at CCP could come up with a "story" for why this is necessary; or just to say - HEY you gotta be a REAL LIVE POD PILOT to mine resources - not just some lump of code!

Every single person who plays Eve Online is just some lump of code. It's what we do with that code that makes players different from bots. The captcha thing would annoy the **** out of everyone and possibly lose CCP some subs. I will tell you, compared to most MMO's, Eve has VERY little in the way of "gold farmers" i.e. bot programs ran off of hacked accounts. That's not to say Eve doesn't have it's share, but its far less than others. If you're sure you found one, then bump them, report them, suicide their ship, w/e floats your boat. Bots are better at those things than humans are. I can't read a lot of them and I don't even have vision problems, what would you do about all the people who are now not capable of mining, since they can't read them? |

Why ban bots when you can kill them?
Also, CCP already had an "interactive" mining prototype several months ago. Expect to see it tomorrow at the Eve keynote. |

no, let's not make mining even more dull and tedious.
if you want to get rid of bots, ban them rather than breaking the game for all of the legitimate players.
people with ideas like this honestly need a forum ban. ruining the game for legitimate players is not a useful or meaningful contribution to the forum or the game. |

I run a small mining corp - Orca command + mix of Retrievers/Covetors + hauler - and I hate afkers/botters and multiboxing software. I welcome any attempts from CCP that involves making it harder for these said individuals to achieve their goals of RMT or whatever it is thet do for little or no effort. All the while caring about those of us who choose to make an honest living in EVE (adhering to the CODE but not necessarily paying for the privilege to some asswipe who tries to run a protection racket on people without providing the protection). |

So you hate players who legitimately pay for and play the game with 2 or more accounts and dual/multi box said accounts? Probably 1/3rd of Eve has more than 1 account and at least dual boxes at some point. I can guarantee that those of us that are dual/multi boxing are NOT bots. I pay and field 4 accounts, controlling each manually. Things can get frantic at times, but I love the challenge. Removing my ability to log in multiple separate, legitimate, paid, non-botting accounts on the same machine would reduce my accounts from 4 to 0. I support aggressive bot detection and account bans. I also support hunter/gankers that take out bots and the AFK.

OH my!
BTW Dave Stark - just 'cause you don't like my idea doesn't mean I should get a forum ban. My opinion is that bot miners "ruin the game" far more in their negative impact on the market and economy than it would be "ruined" by having to enter a short randomly group of characters to turn on mining modules. My friends and I report suspect Bot miners over and over and they never get banned. We can pick them out easy breazey but CCP never seems to have the proof they need. You are obviously entitled to think that this is a seriously bad idea but one of the positive's of "brain storming" is that one doesn't know ahead of time what would be a good idea or not.
Danika Princip - you make a very good point that some folks can't read them - my brother of the heart is color blind and I'll bet he has difficulty with these too. Perhaps a choice to hear them?
If Captchas are so easily macro'd, why is the real world full of them?
Nevyn Auscent - I did try to search but as usual found that the results were not very helpful to me. Also - just because some one says something over and over doesn't make it true................. |

Captchas inside of video games are a terrible idea. If you're seriously considering implementing them for mining then why not look at implementing them for any bot-able activity?
Market trade - captcha Activating a gun module - captcha Mining - captcha
I can't think of anything more jarring to my ingame fun than having to solve annoying captcha. |

you are obviously entitled to think this is a seriously good idea, but one of the positives of the search function is that one finds out if a suggestion is terrible and done to death before they post. |

Now that would be emergent game play.
With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.
