How about ships dealing twice the smartbomb DMG when explode?
With one exception - you dont lose security status if explode at station/gate..
So when my megathron explodes i might take a ceptor down with me ^^
...and all the drones 
any thoughts?

Possabaly fix it so that your pod is unaffected by the explosion of your ship.

He means that a number of alts in n00b ships could gank mining barges without a sec loss by just charging in and self destructing.

I like it. although i dont think your pod should be invulrable to it and it should only occur if a self destruct is intiated. standard ship distruction should have some explosion radius but only enough to damage a pod and not destroy it, if only for realisium sake. Or perhaps the Pod could be said to ride the shockwave, make it slide 30km in a random direction. And i think the OP mean you wouldn't lose sec if you hit a gate/station/empire ship etc. If you usei t as an attack then against other players, then you would. But given it'd likely be alts anyway then sec wouldn't matter much. Maybe have newbie ships unable to do it?

you maybe could make it happen if the explosion size and damage was related to the ship in that
battleship: explosion radius(er) 20km damage 2000
battlecruiser: er 15km damage 1000
cruiser: er 12km damage 500
destroyer: er 10km damage 350
frigate: er 7.5km damage 200
newb ship: er 2km damage 100
self destruct timer would be 150seconds and then your ship would blow and your penalty would mean your pod and cargo would be destroyed. being blown up would remain the same...

Perhaps when you start the self destruct timer your ship should start emitting red 'blips' (sensor booster idea but red heh) and have a countdown timer. This way ppl would get a warning about them. Also the damage idea is great

It wouldn't be overpowered as id say the pod would probablly be launched in a random direction and wouldnt need to go too far. 
EDIT: ITs like the pod would be almost shot off into space to escpae the blast.

This would only serve to make battleships more immune to smaller stuff.. when you kill it you die anyway.
Nice idea.. but i dont see a way it can be implemented in the current state of the game without some drastic rethinks.
