I know ships explode and all, but the blast can't be strong enough to wipe out several TONS of minerals. But maybe it's CCP's way of punishing people who carry so much stuff without the proper escort... Seeing those 2 BPCs go boom really sucks though.

H I don't think this is it, or killing indies w/ a Crow would almost always allow most modules to remain. Instead I've seen 99% of modules destroyed this way. I honestly think it's just blind luck.

Like if the bestower had 10 structure left and the last shot does 800+++ wtfdamage then I think you take ship and most all of the payload. Whereas if the last shot was for 40 damage, then some payload might have survived. It maybe just blind luck, but thats my theory.
