So this idea would mainly be for Wormhole use, but I think anyone who wanted a "Home away from Home" would find it handy as well.
I would like to see a ship similar to the Orca, but bonused for exploration rather than mining. I would also drop the ore hold for more cargo/hangar space. In place of the ability to fit links, I would like to see it have a new ability called "Anchor" or "Base Deployment", something along those lines. In practical terms, the way it would work is that, when activated, a small POS style shield would go up around the ship (radius of about 5km), and it could no longer be moved (optionally, fuel could be required for this). At that point the pilot could eject from the ship, and operate as if from a POS with a CHA and an SMA. Turning off the module should, I think, take 5 minutes (same as a siege/triage module). The shield need not be overly strong, perhaps strong enough to require a single battleship 5-to minutes to put it into reinforced mode. The reinforce timer itself should only last a short period of time, perhaps 15-30 minutes. It would of course send alerts the same way a POS does.
I believe this would allow individuals and small groups to go on wide ranging explorations, rather than either scanning down local sites, or finding one wormhole and setting up a whole operation there. Presently, you could do something similar with an Orca, but it would be a bit more of a hassle, and require either an account to log in and out with the Orca, or someone to just leave an alt sitting in it cloaked. This would keep the ship in space and allow it to be used more easily, but keep it secure enough to not just get ninja popped. I think this would also |

ideas for an Orca like mobile base come up. i also would like one.
i'd have +1'd this if it wasn't for the POS like deployment and shield. make friends/alts and have them drive the Orca-thing/caravan. I dnt think it should be capable for a single person do this kinda thing. |

Well, regardless if it is done solo or with friends, someone just ends up sitting in the thing not doing much, or logging on and logging off. This keeps more stuff in space. |

The only thing I want from a mobile base is the ability to anchor it, no pos shield or modules. I just don't want to be the one to drive the camper around and then cloak up and wait for the to get over. My thoughts would be have a larger than normal SMA and CHA but make them inaccessible unless the ship is anchored. Ideas For Drone Improvement Updated 11/30/12Catastrophic Uprising is Recruiting |

I think the Anchoring is the main thing, I just feel like, if you don't have a shield or something, it's a bit too vulnerable when anchored. This way, it still wouldn't be that hard to attack, but it would take a bit more effort then a Stealth Bomber sneaking up to it and blasting away while the group is doing whatever they have it around for. |

Obviously, I like the concept, heheheh ... If you're driven to threaten others with harm or violence because of what they do in game, you can't separate fantasy from reality.-á That 'griefer/thief' is probably more sane than you are.-á How screwed up is that? |

I don't believe I said anything about a bubble, I said a POS style shield with a short reinforce timer. Just something to alert that it is being attacked with a short amount of time to run back and defend. |

But still no, a reinforce timer is a benefit of a full POS, you should never be too far away from this kind of ship as it could anchor anywhere. You'd be wrong.

That sounds a lot like a bubble to me. |

You are right. Both a Warp Disruption Field and a POS shield, are, in fact, spherical, and can be described in terms of their radii. Mechanically, however, they are quite different. To my knowledge, a Warp Disruption field does not operate as a shield, nor does it have a reinforce timer. And while a POS shield could be described as a bubble, I have never heard anyone do so (though that does not mean no one does). Warp Disruption Fields are, however, regularly called "bubbles." |
