So really, what's the deal with the ugliest ships known to man as a Caldari primary characteristic?
Perhaps it's just me, but hitting the point where I can pilot cruisers, as a Caldari, has brought my game play to a dead stop. I really just can't stand looking at the things I'm supposed to be piloting. My first purchase, a Caracal, was the least problematic. While it's not exactly a thing of great beauty, it's, at least, symmetrical. The buck toothed appearance actually sort of grew on me. My Moa, on the other hand, looks like it ought ot be in a constant spin to starboard. How are these wildly disproportionate engine supposed to move this congealed lump of slag in a straight line?
I can't suspend any sort of disbelief when I see the engine layouts on the vast majority of Caldari ships. In a space based game, the logical bit of me prevails, and I can't help but think, "How in the world do they balance the thrust on these things?"
Having gone over the battleships, I can see that my desire for symmetry of design, let alone a pleasing appearance, is doomed at that level as well. It's disheartening. I really can't stand looking at the ship I've put all this effort into. I certainly don't want to continue down a path that will end in so much ugly.
So, given that I'm about to start learning how to fly another race's ships, simply so I can continue to play this game which I otherwise enjoy so much, what do you more experienced players suggest? Amarr? Galente? The Minmatar ships look like they'll irritate me even more. Do the rails I'm proficient in lend themselves to another race's ship designs?
Sorry for the mild venting.

Gallante can use rails and look much better than the caldari.

Well, what you train next depends on how willing you are to totally revamp your character. You've probably trained up hybrid guns, so Gallente would be the logical choice for you.
On the other hand, if function is more important to you, I'd go with Minmatar. They're closer to Caldari in the way they work: burst damage, slow rate of fire, ability to choose damage types. Some of their ships also rely heavily on missiles (the typhoon, for instance).
That said, Minmatar ships tend to be asymmetrical but often look badass despite (or BECAUSE) of it; they also don't, generally, have a problem with massively off-center thrust like caldari do.
Personally, while Amarr ships look cool, they just didn't feel right to me as a Caldari pilot. Trained all the way up to use Amarr battleships and I really didn't like the apoc or the armageddon. Trained up Minmatar and finally found a turret battleship I like: the tempest. That thing is just ebil.
For the record, I still fly Caldari - namely the Raven. It's a sweet ship for NPCing vs. 0.0 spawns and for PvP at close range against battleships.
The tempest is a great sniper (1400's ftw!), but is also very effective as a short-range ganker thanks to autocannons. In addition, its slot layout means it can shield tank, armor tank, or even combine damage mods with a shield tank.

Well, All caldari are ugly its quite logical that the most hideous ships should be caldari as well !

This is a good question, and I've often thought about it as I watch <insert asymetric Eve ship here> fly between gates. I just guessed that they compensate the thrust of the off-centre engine by overpowering other engines. In theory, this would give you more manoeuvrability, but only in one direction.
Basically, it makes no sense.
Yeah yeah, I know its a game... |

Thanks for the feedback. I think my plan will be to get a Ferrox and stick with it while I decide what I want to pursue otherwise, and do the research I should have done before now. ;)
I appreciate the advice,

Amarr for symetry
The Omen and Armageddon are good examples of beutifull ship design. Many Gallente designs have slight distorted features, but looks better than caldari.
But, rails are not the best with Amarr ships

Thing about the engines looking like they'd make the ship spin one way bothered me a lot once, then i found out that its not thrust coming out of the back of your ship. Its heat exhaust from its engine. Therefore technically it could be on any side of the ship and still move it in the same direction.
I guess Caldari prefer practicallity over asthetics of any kind. I too know what you mean, i fly Gallente ships even though i'm Caldari partly because i couldn't stand looking at myself in that Raven lol.

Actually, the exhaust being released in that direction *would* provide thrust. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, meaning the "exhaust" we see also provides directional thrust. -Wrayeth

Then sell your Caldari ships, train for Gallente and leave me and my beloved Caldari ships alone.

Well i'm sure it would provide thrust... but hardly enough to propel the ship on its own. Thats what i was getting at. Thats what that engine does, however it works.

True. But the slightest bit of of unbalanced thrust can send a rocket spiralling wildly off course. -Wrayeth

Many Caldari ships get a 10% bonus to ugliness per level.

True. But we're not dealing with a rocket here :P
And yeah, you picked the wrong race there, big time :)

whats worse is te constant nerfing and the unfair racial discrmination against caldari and thier weapons. specially onthe raven.. 6 launcher hardpoints.. *tries to restrain himself* GODMANIT. also ammo size is stupidly huge..
you can take away our beauty! BUT GIVE US MORE LAUNCHER POINTS AND WE'LL SHOW U WHO'S UGLY!!

Caldari use gravematretic thrusters - the large pods are graviton generators.

Eyes of the beholder and all that....
The Blackbird is one of the best looking ships in the game. I thought it was beautiful the first time I saw it.
The Raven is also a fantastic looking ship. The Scorp bothers me a little bit... and I didn't like the Caracal at first... but it's grown on me since I live in my Cerberus.
Caldari are all about function over form... which I very much enjoy.

Um, space is a vacuum, there is no friction, so there is no need for a ship to be symmetrical. All you need is evenly applied thrust and for the mass of the ship to be balanced. There's no reason why a Moa would not fly straight
Anyway, I quite like the look of caldari ships. The raven and scorpion are beautiful, and the phoenix is in my opinion by far the most intimidating dreadnaught. The blackbird is quite nice too. I fly mostly minmatar ships, so if you think caldari are ugly, you should try staring at the ass of a rupture for a while.

Anyone who attempts to argue that Caldari ships have no aesthetics is either blind, ignorant or severely lacking a sense of design.
Caldari ships look like warships. Gallente ships look like the latest style offering from a 'marketing makes the decisions here' Detroit car company.

I don't see your point here ... the blacbbird and scorpion are the two best looking shipd in the game ... My only problem is the griffin with those two side thrusters ...

Caldari ships are fine, a bit 'funky' at times maybe but never ugly, yet very functional in their designs.
When i started the game i decided to go Caldari cos of their cool ships. Minmatar are second and the smooth pimped up stuff amarr and gallente fly are boring imo tho both their races BC's look awesome.
On the matter of realism, there's no thrusters and boosters on these ships either, just main engines it seems, yet some have crazy agility...so the fact that some can fly at all may not be that surprising :p

Blackbird and Ferox look really nice. I'd wish the SCorp had another wing tho. Gallente ships ar just a sasymmetrical but less blocky and mMinnie ships llok like jumpk piles with engines. Amarr ships are nice and shiny and mostly symmetrical, probably because the devs like Amarr the best

Caldari ships look facist and warlike. They have hard edges and are not smooth. They look like german tanks, funktional and efficient as possible.
Caldari are like those old big Volvos. I drive one as I hate round cars without edges or a bullish front. That's the reason I fly Caldari ships only, and hell I love them.

It was an error made in early beta. The guy who designed them had a faulty monitor, it was tilted to the left a bit, and he was too lazy to tilt it upright, so when he was done they all came out lopsided. ------------------------------------------- "Det hõr kan betyda krig!" |

hell, not only was the designer taking a **** when caldari ships were drawn up, so too were the coders when making em fly, black birds still fly facing a different direction on approach to gates etc
but on topic again, the moa, what the f*ck was ccp thinking when they thought that thing would pass as a spacecraft? - - - - - - - - - - -

You're quite quite wrong on both counts - blackbirds fly teh right way, and a lot of Caldari ships are precision built warships. Just look at Ferox/Raven/Harpy/Crow/Scorp. Not arty-farty bits of technoshine. ---:::---

You know something? I really, really like the caldari ships. They fit my impression of the caldari perfectly.
(The below lines are personal opinion only from what I've read of the backstory) The caldari are a race run by megacorps where every decision is based on 1 fact: profit.
So why bother hiring designers etc to try and fit all of the components that go into a starship into a nicely modelled chassis when u can save R&D time (and the designers salary ) and get a starship engineer (or a robotic assembly module / computer) to just bolt them all together in a configuration that fits ad will work. It's about eating your competitors to market, not making it look shiny.
To me the caldari ships really have character, something which really is abundantly present in EVE. Stop whining about the ships lack of symmetry and start to really look at the detail that has gone into thee models. Just like everything in EVE from the lowliest cargo can to the Outposts, a lot of love has gone into filling the universe with character that fits the respective races.
Just my 2 isk

And they are flying in space, where aerodynamic has nothing to say ... I still have to see some realy rational spaceship desing (except the Borg cube) that I would like. Maybe a mix of Minmatar/Caldari would be realy great.

Caldari ships practical? Function over form? Efficiency? Hardly. All those wings and parts stickin this way and that, greatly increase your surface area to volumne ration, thus increasing heat loss to space, and reduce the hulls strength, and require additional materials to build.
the most efficient ship shape for deep space, material, practicality, volumne for size and materials involved, would simply be a cube, ala star trek borg. If you do the boring, higher level math, youll find out that a cube is the most efficient shape you can have when considering material to build it to the volumne you get out of it. It would also be sturdy, lose little energy to space, and you would have plenty of room to pack engines, guns, etc.
but cubes are boring.
