I think having battle scars on your ships after they've been in a few fights would be a good idea. It would really add to the depth and give more meaning.
Maybe giving the option to opt out on repairing the scarring in the station facilities, or a full repair.
Scarring shouldn't have any real negative effect on the shield/armour/hull of the ship though.
Just a thought :)

Much like the avatar method, it might just be easier to allow you to add scars to your ships through a ship customization option.
Though the idea of earning them is much easier, and since ships don't respawn, it would mean more than the scratches you put on a new clone.
If you're driven to threaten others with harm or violence because of what they do in game, you can't separate fantasy from reality.-á That 'griefer/thief' is probably more sane than you are.-á How screwed up is that? |

Shield's don't suffer from scars - it would be highly unlogical if my hull would get scars although nothing touched the hull..
Also, armor repairers are supposed to fix dmg to the hulls.. so infact, this would rather hurt immersion imho.
It has the potencial for a nice eyecandy though.. |

id say it should only get scars once u bleed structure and do you even know what a scar is Gimme more cynos? when your body heals it dosent leave scars i guess...

battle damage would be great. A lot of custom skin changes would be awesome. In this instance, not just custom paint jobs, but texture changes too.
