Today a sharp pirate came into my system and killed one of the locals. Being a civic sort, I offered to help in the hunt - but to be honest, I dont have much PvP experience. I tagged allong with one of the locals and planned on doing whatever he did.
The pirate showed up at our gate and I locked her. When I saw the local fire, I did as well. He immidietely took sentry fire and was destroyed shortly thereafter. The pirate wapred away and then I began to take sentry fire so I went to a belt. I waited there for a bit and (foolishly) went back to the gate, where my ship was destroyed by gate gun fire. The pirate got my can too .
My assumptions (may be inaccurate): Criminal flag lasts 30 minutes, and durring this time you cannot approch a gate or station. Someone who is criminally flagged can only go to belts, planets, moons or the sun - or some other empty part of space. Jumping without being able to 'tank' sentry gun fire is impossible.
So, in thinking about the chain of events - what can I do differently to successfully hunt a pirate without being killed by gate guns like this?
If my assumptions are correct, then the pirate had 30 minutes to kill before she could leave - so she has to hang out at places with no sentry guns.
So then to hunt successfully, one must look in various places a pirate may hide (not the stations or the gate(s)), once found attempt a warp scramble, engage and call the backup. Once 30 minutes is up, the pirate cannot be engaged without risking sentry fires (can one attack a criminally flaged target regardless of sec status?). In this case, only engage if at a place without sentry guns. If the pirate is not found in 30 minutes and makes it to the gate, then they have got away.
Do I have this right?
Oh and pirate, good show! You sure did wreak havoc. But I am sure I will see you again

Pretty close.
Its a 20 minute timer. Unless the pirate in question has a sec status of -5 or worse. In which case you can engage them anytime.
The pirate in question probably made a safespot - a spot between 2 celestial objects and sat out the time there. Learn to use your system scanner to narrow down his hiding place.
Kudos to you for doing something about it too.

Jump to it and voila an safe spot..
Just remember people who can use probes can find you any where in space ..

looks like this device - Scan Probe Launcher is what I need then.
This guide will be helpfull as well - Scan Probe Guide
Is there a guide to the basic scanner? I could not find one using eve-search, although I may have used the wrong words.
I have never used that scanner, I saw 'you need to lauch scan probes' and figured I couldent use it until I got that skill at some point. Apparently it has some limited function without scan probes.
