What exactly is accuracy falloff and how does it relate to optimal range?

An example:
A weapon has 10km optimal range and 5km falloff. This means that at 10km range, the weapon will do the most damage. The falloff is added and substracted to/from the optimal range. So minimum range is 5km and maximum range is 15km.
However, the closer you get to these 'limits', the worse your damage will be. (Ie. if i fire at 6km range i will do less damage than at say, 11km)
Hope that clarifies it a bit.

It's covered in the Tracking Guide here on the website, but it works like this:
Range Penalties are as follows:
0 to Optimal Range = no range penalty Optimal Range to Optimal + Falloff = ~0-50% range penalty Optimal + Falloff to Optimal + 2*Falloff = ~51-100% range penalty
So if you have a 12km Optimal 6km Falloff weapon, your sweet spot is 12km (anything closer and turret tracking speed modifiers make things harder to hit). You can hit with 50% penalty out to 18km and major penalties out to 24km. -- Lil Miner |

Falloff only effects beyond the optimal. It is never subtracted from it. Under optimal is effected only by tracking.

Wrong, entirely wrong, totally wrong.
Read the tracking guide linked in the above post(s). -- Proud member of the [23].

Think of it as a one-tailed normal distribution, with the optimal being the mean, and the falloff the standard deviation.

A normal distribution is the classic 'bell curve' from things like IQ scales and so forth. The mean is the peak of the curve and the s.d. is the distance between the mean and the point whose frequency is half that of the mean. A one-tailed distribution just means one half of the bell curve.

Oh yeah, that's MUCH better.
