I'm a Caldari flying a Merlin. My short term goal is NPC fighting.. long term is PvP. I've been playing for just under a week now.. Just banked my second million ISK and starting to look into what ship class I should be aiming for next. Still working on Learning skills but can start squeezing in the requirements for the next ship class so when I can afford it, I can fly it.
Looks like I should be thinking about a cruiser next? What the next logical class in the fighting arena?

Realistically, you should work on specializing your combat skills before moving up. Trust me, it will make you a better pilot. But, if you are too eager, and are flying the Caldari race specifically you really have two choices.
The blackbird will be a good defensive ship. You can jam and incompacitate your enemy and virtually take advantage of them with missiles. This requires training in electronic warefare in missiles. Your other choice is the Caracal. It's a brute force ship. load it up with some launchers and shield tanking stuff and just go to work.
Just remember, for real pvp you need NON empire space, other wise your security status will plumet and you'll be quickly in the outlaw status. GL to you. _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ You sank my battleship! -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

I apologize I thought you said PvP. For npcing you can use the Caracal and tanking but ultimately you'll want the Raven for taking on the bad boy NPC's. Use shield tanking and cruise missiles. _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ You sank my battleship! -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

you may want to consider staying with/specializing you small class skills (frigate 5/small hybrid 5/rocket 5/light missile 5) and moving into a interceptor or assault frigate. Caldari have very good ships for each.
what this will do is allow you to also get a lot of you other fitting skills up in the meantime without scattering starship command skill all over the place. weirda know several pilot who have gone this route with a lot of success (wish had done it self). in a harpy or crow you can be very effective in PvP (as well as pve)...
in some situation in eve - bigger is better, but in a lot (if not most), just being really good at what you do is best (even if in a smaller ship class)... -- Thread Killer (attempting to train verbosity from 4 back down to 1) <END TRANSMISSION> |

Great advice guys. I suspect I'll stick with the Merlin for awhile then and work on the combat skills. I'm blowing through the level 1 combat missions atm so perhaps I'll even survive level 2 missions in the Merlin with stronger combat skills.
Thanks
