I try to buy Computer Games every month, and IIRC, they don't ever really have much to say about EVE when they talk about MMOs. And when they do, it's not particularly positive (e.g., in a massive MMO special, all they said about it was something like "curing insomnia since 2003" or however long it's been around).
They are as unenthused about EVE as PCG UK is enthused. Aside from that one flaw though, it is a good gaming magazine.

Actually he/she is completely correct in his/her review. Ask a question that might seem obvious to most people on these forums and you get blasted by 15 - 20 people. Ask a question in the game and you get retarded answers there as well. Most people would rather ignore you than spend the few seconds it would take to answer the question a person asks.
Oh and dont even suggest something that might change the way the game plays for most people. Cause then you are in for some serious hate mail.
No, his/her review was fairly close to dead on.

I think I'll mail him some cheese to go with his whine!
And so what the hell comunity does he like? The Frelling Sims Online?

I think that pretty much proves the articles point.

And how is that any different from every other game forum out there?

EVE's community consists of alot of people who don't feel like babysitting every other newbie making stupid mistakes.
WoW consists of alot of newbies making stupid mistakes that nonetheless have reached lvl 60 and have tier 3 epic gear.
I ran Scarlet Monastery the other day as a healer (druid). We had a warrior, in plate mail, that refused to tank, forcing our leather-clad Shamans to do it. His excuse? He could do such great damage to a single target at a time, as opposed to the 5 other targets skillfully wiping out the rest of the party.
I, to this day, have never finished an instance consisting of total strangers. It always contains at least one or two people that have absolutely NO idea how the game works. But these people stay in WoW, because WoW doesn't penalize you for this. EVE, on the other hand, would have you lose your ship, pod, dignity and patience if you made such base mistakes on a scale that is common in WoW.
But yes, EVE's community is pretty crap. It's full of miners and carebears that haven't been griefed hard enough yet.

ive always seen the eve-online community as a packs of wolfs. there are may different packs and sometimes when they cross the furr starts to fly.
ffxi's community is full of know it all cloitchs and equally as arrogant noobs, towards the end of me playing that game i would log in just to smack talk the link shell.
everquest II had a decent community, unfortunatly i nearly caped out my level in the 30 day trail. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Like my mum would say, the eve comunity is like a box of chocolates.
When it comes to ships and stuff they would stab you in the back to come out on top. Some will go no end to help any one. other's will do anything aslong as it's in their intrest. other's take eve as a way of life over a game and thus can be very hostile when you screw with them.
and just about everything in between (just like RL tbfh).

I guess I must be playing a different version of Eve than some of you... I have had only good experiences playing this game with others in the community.
Maybe it's a case of "You get what you give", but I have yet to meet an asshat in Eve. Even during wars, etc. people are generally nice to chat with, IF, you don't start being the asshat first.
The sad part of 90% of the reviews on Eve is that most reviewers write their review while having played the game for a few days, or a few hours only. This game has so much depth that it takes much longer than that to get a grasp of gameplay. "Maybe DAOC? havnt tried it but the community seems pretty mature..."
DAOC had a pretty good community from what I experienced in the 2 years or so I played there, but that may have something to do with the seperation of the 'realms'. Mostly I played the under-populated Midgard realm, which was also considered 'underpowered' and therefore probobly didnt attract as many of the lamers. Of course, the forums were crammed with nerf/buff whines, but thats the way of things. Hell, people complained about such things long before graphical MMOs came about.

Edited by: Antic on 03/10/2005 19:36:13 Well eve ingame community could be a lot better if there were proper gang/grouping tools in there to promote people working together outside of their corps. Meeting new people 4tW.
And it would help if they cut the tr0lling children from the forum who give games and communities like this a bad name due to their superiority syndromes.

The Eve community is a good one: that much is evidenced by the levels of player-based content, fan fiction, and fan sites. Friendly and helpful doesn't necessarily translate to good per se: sometimes we just need to say goodbye to the weakest links. It's kinder than constantly handholding someone who's just never going to make it.
From the forums POV at least, your mileage may vary. If you ask a question (yes, ask a question rather than whine about something) in the New Citizens Q&A, you are almost certain to get people trying to give you helpful answers. Ask the same question in General Discussion and you may well get some fippant replies, but someone will probably come up with something helpful. Pop your head into Corporation and Alliances Discussion, however, then it's more like asking a horde of Mongol warriors if they'd mind keeping the noise down a bit.
Things that attract less than friendly responses are universal across all forums. Kicking off your Eve career with a barely-literate rant about some gameplay aspect that you've failed to understand is going to get you shot down. That applies to any community though. Like so much in life, you get as much out Eve as you put in.
You could also argue that you get the community you deserve. If you're a whiny smacktard then yep, the community is going to be bad for you. Rightly so, in my opinion.

Edited by: Nyrram on 04/10/2005 03:11:48 All you have to do is read the quote in question... I won't repeat it here, since while the original author obtained permission from this person to publish their words, I have not..
But, anyone who calls the people they play EVE with their "clan" obviously hasn't played the game long enough to understand anything about the dynamics of the community, so I dismissed their comment as irrelevant as soon as I read it.
