Edited by: Hans Roaming on 03/10/2005 13:37:21 Dreads have the aura of being uber ships at the moment however there have been a number of celebrated losses, the most recnt being the loss of two dreads owned by CVA to RAT as detailed here and here with fraps of the battle available here.
In the last battle the CVA & Allied fleet were mostly short ranged and the RAT fleet had a lot of sniper BS and distrupters which effectivly nullified the Dreads completly. Bearing in mind one of the Dreads was outfitted for long range gank and had a support fleet as well as being flown by pilots who are no strangers to PVP (remember CVA is in a permenant state of war with UK) do you feel these uber ships are worth the ISK invested in them? Do you fly dreads into fleet engagements or would you only use them for taking down POS?
Considering the amount of BS that can be bought for the money, do they offer enough bang for the buck seeing as a bb full of tracking disruptors can nullify them.
Finally this isn't a whine or a flame but is meant to be a discussion about Dreads and the experiences of people that have used them in anger, please keep it that way.

Dreads need to be fixed in respect of the siege mode first. Then remove lots of their initial pre-nerf.
Then get used and die lots untill people learn how to use them properly.

When dreads were first announced my impression was that they are overpriced toys.
They have one real purpose and that is to kill POS's. Thats a lot of skill training and ISK for something that is arguably more boring than mining.

Dread for fleet is wasting your dread.
The fact alone that you are fielding a dread to a fleet fight means your enemy is going to be able to call on many more pilots then if you would not be fielding that dread.
That effect alone is enough to lose your dreads. Let alone the fact that dreads are simply nothing better then BS in a fleet battle. Better still, they're worse.

Dreads were supposed to be invulnerable to EW when in Siege Mode.
Had that been the case, then all those RAT battleships would have died fast.
But yea, they are mostly for taking stations.
Drink up, shoot in. Let the beating begin. Distributor of pain. Your loss becomes my gain...

They are not overpriced if bought for the correct price ie 2bn - 2.5bn and used for intended purpose of anti - pos. in fact they can be very useful.
they are overpriced if bought above 2.5bn (imo) and used for fleet warfare.

Dreads were designed to attack POS's, not for fleet vs. fleet combat.
Carriers, though, look designed for fleet combat.

They are siege weapons, used to destroy stationary targets. That is the reason for siege mode
Yes they can be used in fleets in very specific circumstances but they are still vulnerable, outside of siege mode, to EW and will still get vaporized quickly when called primary.
On the flip side, whilst in siege mode, they will wtfpwn everything pretty quickly, as long as the target has next to zero transversal or is a LONG way away
They are designed to kill POS, and a group of dreads will put a large POS into reinforced mode in under an hour apparently.

You need at least 5-10 very highly skilled dreads to kill a heavyily armed POS within 30mins b4 u run outa fuel (siege mode)or ammo.
a Pos uses small amount of fuel for its reinforced mode 4 long time but a dread uses tons for a short time.
Damage output sucks.
for the isk it costs 3b for the ship and the 800mil and 6 months of training i wouldnt bother till they get some loving.

How viable is it to use a dread as part of a defensive fleet which is defending a POS under attack by another dread fleet?

Thing is you need all the skills. The main thing is you need Advanced Electronics Upgrades 5 to use the seige module. Ouch. In other words, the dreadnaught is only useful if you are all of the follow:
1. Able to afford(solo or allaince) 2. Willing to train all the required skills for GOOD use 3. Have targets to use the thing against
Otherwise, you're wasting your money and time. _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ You sank my battleship! -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
