This may be a bit old now but I've just been watching the new Battlestar Galactica as i used to love the camp old 70's one. I realise its in its second season now so this maybe an outdated post. I genrally like the new and its a lot darker one but a couple of things irritate me.
1 is the you of the word frag I know ists supposed to replace f**k for the younger viewers but it just doesn't fraggin work is it me or does it just sound fraggin daft, I mean what the frag! Am I getting my fraggin point across? For frags sake you either full on swear or dont even bother if your going for a wide age group then just drop the frag altogether.
And my other point Starbucks a woman but hey thats a whole different thread!

Edited by: Pwyle Kenobi on 05/10/2005 02:32:58 A great series! I'm really looking forward to seeing more of it. Where can I get one of those install in your head "imaginary friends"?
I really like the shaky camera work in BSG and the fact that the space scenes (like Firefly) are silent (ie. no ship whoosh or explosions in the vacuum of space).
I agree with you about "frack". In Red Dwarf "smeg" worked, but that was a comedy. D'ya reckon Starbuck can make a decent cup of coffee?

the camera shake was stolen from Space: Above & Beyond, and frack sounds rediculous.
Smeg however is great.

Edited by: Sevarus James on 05/10/2005 06:07:01 Like it or hate it, it does something that I REALLY like. "Frack" replacing a certain other word means no censoring by the network. After watching for two seasons, I even find myself using in place of that other word once in awhile without even realizing I've done it.
This is a very similar response to network censors that Firefly did during its run on FOX. They set up the 'world' five hundred years from now to have descended mostly from english/chinese, and so the cursing.....is in mandarin...and if the censors ever figured out what was being 'relayed' in mandarin, the show would have been rated 'r'. lol
Oh and Katie Sackhoff as Starbuck is da-bomb.

IIRC the (Firefly) cursing is in Cantonese. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Who is the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" Obi-Wan Kenobi |

I loved that series. Looking for it on DVD but no such luck. For its time it was the gritty sci-fi to watch. Great characters.
And the BSG season its already over....ended with the Pegasus...seems like we only got around 10 episodes. Bastards.

I've seen some crap in my time but this series takes the biscuit. It's becoming standard now to provide cheap sets and pad everything else in between with half arsed cgi. This crummy program doesn't break that mould.
Instead of watching this, I would have had more fun melting my face with a blow torch. -TT

I love the new BSG. Sure the word ¦frag¦ aint cool - but the acting and the setting is brilliant IMHO. I would love a bit more space fights and less "Beverly Hills 90210 ish stuff" - but some of the stories are really great. When I saw the pilot, I was stunned...

Well you certainly know what you do and don't like then!
Space Above & Beyond was ... indescribably bad. For God's sake, their "space suits" weren't even closed to vacuum (there was a big gap under the chin so the actors didn't overheat). I guess that's what comes of making it on the Gold Coast in Australia!

Every new series starts off with cheaper effects and sets, especially new sci-fi series, dispite that the new BSG was still nominated for two emmy's in visual effects for two of the season 1 episodes.
I think they did a great job with the series, Katee's Starbuck is bang on and the season 2 finale was one of the best cliffhangers in a sci-fi series in a long time. The sci fi genre has been wallowing in crap for the longest time, it's nice to have a series I actually look forward to seeing again.

The new Battlestar Galactica is tied with Babylon 5 and Farscape for best Sci Fi shows... ever.
Beats Buffy and Angel for drama, though, and that's hard to do.
Can't wait to get the DVD's.
-What kind of crime is Star Buckin'?

Funny you should mention Josh Weadon programs, I just watched Firefly and the drama (as in characters) is top notch, I certainly recomend it to someone who like B5 :)

Old Starbuck: A guy with a greasy 70s haircut. New Starbuck: A chick. With boobies. Two of them.
Even though she's a little funny lookin', I don't think you'll find a straight man on this forum who prefers the old Starbuck.

now that was a series with potential, just to fraggin bad that the company running it dropped the ball totally on it and only ran it for one season.

Firefly is the best ever. Good second for me is stargate atlantis. Battlestar is ok but there are to much eps who are not,but the second season is a lot better.

Ok if you can get you d**k out the palm of your hand for one second. My point about starbuck is in the orignal show he was a male chauvinist womaniser... What a guy and in the new show they tried to make a female version of starbuck and all they have done is created some eye candy that is a Tom boy, what is it can only strong women character Tom boy's or something!

I don't know what you're watching, but BSG ain't it. They have some of the best, and largest, sets around. The CIC is one HUGE set that takes up one of the largest sound stages in Canada, maybe the largest. It's so big and complex that the cast actually gets lost in it.
Name any other series with that sort of dedication and detail to their sets, please.

Truly one of the best SF series ever. I think this show and Firefly takes the genre up a notch.
About the Battlestar Galactica set, I heard that the huge stage they're using is shared with that Stargate Atlantis that the cast and production staff can hear each other across the wall.

I prefer not to! Starbuck makes me hard
And other than that its a great show aswell. What makes it good imho, is that its actually not super cheesy for a change, unlike most SF. :/
i like the fact its more about the people/drama than about "OMG spaceships blowing eachother up!!1"

New BSG is good in my opinion and the second season cliffhanger wos spot on.
One thing did bother me though, the actress who plays Admiral Cain (Michelle Forbes), despite acting the role very well, isn't she a tad young to be an admiral of the fleet
