So the difference between sentry drones and heavy drones is that heavies move to the target and blap at short range whereas sentries sit still where you deployed them, shoot from long range and have lower dps.
It is incredibly inconvenient to have to come back to the sentry drones to collect them once they're finished killing things! The trouble is that if they were able to move around they'd be massively over powered :'(
So I had an idea for increasing the user friendliness of sentry drones without making them OP. I got my inspiration from a very different part of the game: dreadnought siege modules. Siege modules give dreads massive boosts to DPS and local rep at the cost of not being able to move. Sound like anything else you may have read about recently?
Here's my idea: Sentry drones should have "inverse siege modules". You deploy your sentries and fly off to engage targets with your short range guns/missiles. When everything is dead and you want to scoop your sentry drones, you just hit the return to drone bay command and the sentry drones activate their "inverse siege modules". This does the exact opposite of a dreadnought siege module: the sentries lose the ability to target things (and hence the ability to apply any DPS) but gain the ability to fly through space and are therefore able to MWD back to your drone bay.
Finally, you can immediately redeploy the sentry drones, but there is a cooldown period after every deployment before you can recall them. Of course if you are in range then you can just scoop them before the cooldown expires.
These changes would make sentry drones much more convenient, but perhaps a little OP, but that can always be fixed by tweaking the stats. |

No.
Sentry Drones are NOT meant to be dropped then run off to use your short range guns/missiles to then come back and scoop them up. They are meant to sit NEXT TO the ship deploying them while that ship using LONG RANGE weapons to shoot enemies. CCP should not be changing game mechanics because it's "inconvenient" for YOU, only if it's a broken mechanic, which it is not. Sentries work GREAT for their intended purpose, and are only about 25 DPS less than their Faction's Heavy Drone counterpart. Take the lack of having to actually travel to the target and they are SUBSTANTIALLY higher DPS than their Faction's Heavy Drone. Agreed with the above poster.
No.
The way they work is the very literally the price for the range they boast. Deal with it, or cease using them.
Or at the very least, don't be the umpteenth thread complaining about them. Not posting on my main, and loving it.-á Because free speech.-á |

CCP is trying to work on sentry drones returning on command, it was posted in the gallente battle ship balance thread. and it is an extremely effective use of sentries to deploy them and fight your target at close range while keeping your sentries at range. Just buy a MJD(Microwarp Jumpdrive) and a dominix and jump around and sit there while see the ships melting down. (Missions) I don't really like the idea of the sentrys moving around or that you can reconnect them and they warp to you and you pop them up again. Well, fine with a duration timer of deploying them again in 2 minutes or something - this would be good. Because i have a feeling it would be.. overpowered if no duration timer would exist.
With great responsibility comes great DPS.-á |

^^^^^ so much this.
The MJD was literally made with this in mind. Not posting on my main, and loving it.-á Because free speech.-á |

I don't see how it would be overpowered, at all.
I'm fine with the idea that sentries pop out and 'deploy', and have to break down before coming back inside. So long as there was a short setup and breakdown time it would be fine. |

Devs have stated that they'll implement sentry drone "return" function. You still can't "send" them anywhere like normal drones, they move only while returning to your dronebay. Standings Improvement Service https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=19454 |

Exactly what I'm talking about . Do you have a link to that? I couldn't find any threads on sentry drones beyond "plz don't nerf my domi, I don't even like sentries".

Thank you for your opinion, but based on the above quote it seems you are in a minority. When he spoke at Fanfest 2013, Hilmar P+¬tursson talked about being in a small mining corp early on in the EVE universe and not telling anyone that he was secretly the CEO of CCP Games. He told a story about how his corpmates used jetcans to drop off ore that was collected by their hauler pilot, a purpose for which the jetcans had not been even remotely intended for. He said the innovation of the players, doing unexpected things with existing mechanics, was a constant source of inspiration for the dev team. So thank you again for your opinion, but try to keep an open mind in the future. |

unless yer in pvp, if you're leaving sentry drones, you're doing it wrong.
build a rattlesnake, put 3 drone amp II's, 3 omni directional trackers, 4 drone link aug II. drop curator II's, bouncer II's, or whatever and snipe out past 100km for nasty damage. my rattlesnake does 776 dps with garde II's. in my high, i have a small armor repper incase the drones are targeted. i use the mjd to keep at range from the rats. in sanctums, i warp to 50k, then mjd strait up or down so that i am positioned 100km above and directly in the middle. if anyone warps to the sanctum attempting to pvp, they are 100km below me. i can snipe em form there or warp to pos.
in 10/10 complexs. i jump in, mjd up and in a direction towards the gate. that way, when i clear out some of the riff raff, i can mdj back down to the gate and sit and finish off the rest of the field. MOST* rats cant hit u at 100km. the sansha get a shot in every once in a while, but my drones dish it out at that range. everything melts.
with sentries, its about placement. if u set it up for 100km as a base, then use the mjd for mobility, its measured in 100km increments. tip, before u jump to the next gat, make sure your 3 minute timer has expired...=) its a beautiful way to clear a 10/10 without getting hurt by anything (except that 16k damage citidel torped that gets fired...geeez).
just remember to scoop drones before u mjd then redeploy. |
