Currently the DSP is usefull for a couple of things, one of them being quickly identifying ded4/10's out of the rest while scanning high sec for sigs.
I read something on the forum (not confirmed in any way, but can't find the topic anymore) that there will be a change in Odyssey, making it impossible to simple to cherry-pick the ded4/10's like it was possible now.
Is there any truth in this? I'm currently working towards astrometrics5, with the single goal being able to use the DSP to cherry pick signs. If they're changing this, I don't really see any point in me continueing that training atm.
Or are there advantages to using DSP that I'm not seeing? |

I don't see any reason why it should not work in Odyssey.
No reason for astrometrics V? NO REASON FOR ASTROMETRIC V? Mate, after the change that skill will be even more awesome. More probing strength, faster probing and less scan deviation .. with one skill. DO IT.
I sometime use DSP to scan down ships, they don't look that scary as Combat probes. German blog about smallscale lowsec pvp: http://friendsofharassment.wordpress.com |

I am not a huge fan of this cherry-picking personally and would welcome a change in signature signal strength (being it variable e.g.).
To your question, it will still be possible, however you will not be able to get numbers though, but you will get a bar - just adapt. |

Right now using DSP to cherry pick sites is not that great. The high sec 4/10 complexes have the same sig strength as Watches, Chemical Yards, Data processing centers, shattered life support units, Solar harvesters, Crystal Quarries, Abandoned stations, Battle remains, Small Jaspet deposits, Average Kernite deposits, large Omber deposits, and wormholes to C3 space. So a 4/10 complex shares the 0.10 signal strength category with 12 other sites. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

Right now i have to scan ~10-15% of signatures, cause I know, that everything else is in another band, and will not contain Watches or DED 4/10... |

I noticed.
This brings me another question: With max launch of 7 Probes, is it worth skilling AstroV with priority?
They cut the bonus of all other scanning skills in half and put them in the astro skill bonus, but is it really needed to decently scan?
I mainly went for Astro5 for the DSP, if it's removed I don't really see a point (if you can decently scan with astroIV) |

btw because im lazy and don't want to google a scanning guide
what's the best formation 8 probes should be in for maximum efficiency while scanning? Cube shaped, with all 8 overlapped in the middle? |

There are three schools, the cubists (myself), multitaskers and the little pancake folk.
Cube is scientifically the optimal formation for triangulation and is least prone to false results and catches off-plane sigs best, ring indicators and such fumbling (maximizes the chances of having most probes ideally positioned in regards to the signature), but other formations have different, practical advantages. I use the cube since it allows "center cluster mashing", ie. dropping probes in midcluster at 4 AU and eliminating a bunch of crap sigs in one pass. Relevant in wh scanning.
Multitaskers use two sets of 4 probes to scan two sigs simultaneously with obvious benefits, but also the normal drawbacks of using just four probes.
The pancake school spreads their probes in two concentric squares , inner ones at 1AU and outer ones at 8AU. It's fidliest to set up, but generally needs little resizing since you are operating at 1AU with the inner probes.
Both cube and pancake require two passes to resolve most sigs, so it comes down to personal preference really.
