Up to now I have only been heavy mining for cash and pirate killing in sectors as low as 0.2 with heavy beam lazers. As you have probably guessed the whole gun fitting scene is new to me so i would appreciate help on how to fit my Thorax out to the best spec possible for hunting in a 0.0 sector. Money is not really a problem so please dont hold back on the best =). All loadouts will be much appreciated.
Cheers

3 250 gauss
1 close range gun of your choice.. M if u have the leftover grid, S if not.
1 named smartbomb.
med slots, up to u, but throw in a shield booster for sure.
low slots, magnetic vortes stabilizers/pd1-rc1 combo. IE fit as many mag vortexes as u can.
Use the sb for missles... u are pased for range with this setup, so, fepending on the spawn, u may want to back off the spawn point to about twice the optimal on your gauss, give or take. This gives u a lil time, if it's a busy spawn, to reload, recharge cap, shields etc.
Oh, throw in wasps if u have em, they make short work of npc pirates, and draw fire as well. Evolution..... Just when you thought you were winning.

I agree with the loadout here. I also use heavy drones for pirate hunting. When you get dwon to three pirates left, your drones can handle one of them without the other picking them off. Any suggestions on where to get the Magnetic Vortexes?

Quote: Any suggestions on where to get the Magnetic Vortexes?
From the pirates you'll be killing.
Also, the idea when outfitting your ship is to put on it what you feel you need. Take a simple load out like 2 250's and 2 Ion's. Throw on a shield booster and some damage mods and take her for a spin.
Since everyone's fighting style differs, you be able to tell after a full day of hunting what needs to be changed on your ship. Do you need more shields? Do you run out of capacitor? Does your capacitor or shields take too long to recharge for your tastes? Where enemy missiles really giving you a problem? Did some of your modules not work the way you expected them to?
Answer those questions then adjust the fitting on your ship to solve your particular problems. Any configuration you see on the boards might work well for one person but not well for you.
Give it a shot and report back with what you've discovered.

use 150 for close range, it's better than ANY medium close range weapon

true 150mm are v.good closerange weapons, my loadout usually 3 250mm (Thorium)(lost my gauss on last 'rax) 2 150mm proto (AntiMatter)the 2 150's can deal out 100+ damage between 3-9km usually (for me), + Large shield booster n MWD (u never know if ull run into a group of pc pirates).

Is 3 basic 250 mm enough to cope in a 0.0 sector ?

I fly a maller and before I started getting rare drops all I had was basic guns and equipment and its quite easy to use basic stuff in 0.0 if you use the right tactics, rare loot like gass just make it easier .

@Ultima 3x250 should be enough, although you must bear in mind that there are very diferent kinds of 0.0... ranging from a few 8k frigates to several 50k cruisers... Make sure to use ammo ranges and damages to your advantage.

So far, the best way i know of defending against scrambling and webing is range. You'll want to stay above 23-24, to be on the safe side. EW favors NPCs... Warp scrambling is not really a problem if you are at a confortable range, and dealing damage. Why would you want to leave? Just take those few grace seconds after warp in to put some distance between you and the rats.

3x250 guass, 1x150 S guass, auto-targeter, shield booster, sensor booster, tracking booster, 2xp-diag 1, 3xhybrid upgrades (vortexII). Fast killing with some skills and youŠll have a much higher chance to counter a pker if that would happen... It also allow a missil defense this way. __________________________________________________________ |

Edited by: Kozak on 04/08/2003 03:00:35 I don't agree with some of the posts above. I used to use 3 250mm Gauss, but had problems with cap running low, that's with engineering 4 and energy systems 2.
My load out now is:
Hi Slots- 2x 250mm Prototype Gauss 2x Anode Ion Particle Cannon
Medium Slots- Medium C5-L Sheild Booster Cap Rechareger (11.6% cap recharge bonus) 'Orion' Tracking CPU
Low Slots- 2x Power Diagnostic System I (7.5% cap and shield recharge bonus) 3x Damage Modifyers
This set up gives me range and my capacitor never runs out. Anode Ion Particle Blasters are more powerfull then any close range gun. They are effective with 10K and the setup above gives me 6x damage mod on them (120 damage average).
Having only 2 long range guns is enough and keeps you cap stable. If you get swarmed, the Anode Ion Particle Blasters are very powerfull and take very little cap, so you can keep your shield booster on while blasting the pirates away.
With this setup I easily handled 5 NPC rats in Thorax's, even though they swarmed me and webifyed me.
Hope that helps.

What price is on the proto gauss? I know the normal gauss go for around 7.5 mill. Also these damage modifiers what exactly are they??

If you are having problem with cap load, and yet still have some powergrid to spare, try throwing in an artillery or other projectile weapon. They use little to no cap, and still do damage. |

I've recently aquired a Thora and did some NPC hunting in 0.0. Nothing too serious, but i did manage to make a good comparison between the Thorax and the Rupture when dealing with 3 20k Sanchas (Ravishers?). I fit the Thorax with 3x250 rails, 2x150 (small) and the assorted capacitor, powergrid upgrades and damage mods. I found the <Thorax a much faster killer than the (projectile) Rupture. However i found the Thorax needs to kill fast because unlike the Rupture it has trouble avoiding being swarmed in a long fight.
On the other hand, this makes the Thorax a better ship for defensive roles in 0.0 mining operations.
All my loadouts use stock weaponry. Only on the other equipment i have a few (very few) looted stuff.

I've much the same set-up as the others posting here- Thorax with 2x 250 Hybrids and 2 x dual 150's.
Have trained my 'cap' skills big time and so rarely have trouble with cap drain even with all 4 blasting away.
Don't forget though that you could (and I do) add in small projectile weapons to that 5th slot for little cap penalty- I still use my 250 'Scout' Howy or 280 'Scout' Howy in the 5th slot and achieve 50-100 damage shots from them

The auto-targeter mentioned does serve a very important purpose that many have not heard, it allows for guns to shoot incoming missiles. That is a much needed module on a thorax which cannot use missiles for defense.
Your Mega Afocal Pulse Maser I perfectly strikes Asteroid (Veldspar) [R0ME], wrecking for 798.3 damage.
Your 425mm Railgun I perfectly strikes Guardian Captain, wrecking for 685.9 damage.

Bah I shoot missiles from arch engravers all day long with no special gear I have been educating people one by one for free...maybe I should open enrollment at "Bashars School of Missile Defense" and charge tuition

Bashar, hehe. I know it can be done. One just need not to keep 'focus' on a target to 'manualy' taget the missile. The auto-targeter is just for us lazy *cough* __________________________________________________________ |

3x250 rail here (usually uranium-hybrid) 2x150 rail-prototype (again uranium)
2 damage-modifier 1 cargo-extention 2 power-upgrades
1 med. shield-booster 2 cold gas arcjet-thrusters (afterburner)
and the drone-bay is filled with 8 wasp's
sometimes, they try to warp-scramble me - true but that ends after the BIG BOOOMM - all the time

I use 3 250mm Carbides Mediums with Thorium Charge, 1 250 Small Projectile for low cap situations (with Titanium Sabot), and 1 Anode Ion Particle Baster for close range (again with Thorium Charge).
I recommend taking your MWD off and replacing it with an afterburner to avoid the hit in shields and capacitor, and filling your low slots with as many power upgrades as you need and a smany damage mods as you have room left over for.
I also use a combination of Wasps and Beserkers.
Quick note about Smrtbombs - don't do what I did and use one when all your drones are in orbit or you'll lose them :)
Hope that helps _______________________________________________

First i would just like to thank everyone for the help ... All youre specs and suggestions have helped alot and gave me a better knowledge on pirate hunting with a thorax . I have been to a few belts now with just 3 x 250 mm , 2 x dual 150mms ,medium shield booster, photonic etc etc and 7 wasps . Got scrambled the 1st belt i went into and almost had a heart attack but like someone said earlier in this thread there was no point panicking i just pulled out the drones and bamm. I will in time apply the weapons you have all mentioned its just quite hard to find anyone selling them in the trade channel.. maybe ill pick some up in pirate drops =) Once again i thank everyone in the thread for their help !!!!!!

Actualy Juan, Mixing your types of turrets is essential to effective hunting. The larger turrets track to slow to hit frigates nearly enough. So having a mix of medium and small turrets will ensure you have a satisfactory kill ratio and since you get a bonus to hybrid damage with a gallente ship, make sure you use nothing less than hybrid weapons. The best you can afford.
The Throax is "THE" drone ship so by all means load up on the heavy drones. It makes no sense not to. If you don't like drones, then switch ships.
When at last they discover the center of the universe there will be many people who will be dissapointed that they are not it. |
