I sold a few capital component BPC's as BPO's before the contract overhaul, which was nice, and pretty funny at the same time. Once I sold a 600,000 item (or something like that), for 600 million by contract scamming in Jita. I had never done it before, and I just wanted to try it, and see if these scams actually succeed. So I set up a contract and started spamming, within 1 minute, my contract flashed, someone took the bait. Then immediately after, he tried to convo me. I clicked "Deny", which I regret because I should have clicked "Accept" and had some fun. After that beginner's luck, I tried it again for 20 more minutes but no luck. So I never did it again.
Yeah, by accidentally, I mean I had the lowest sell order at the really right moment. This is EVE - Everybody Versus Everybody.

Back in the day, armor plates salvage items was not used in any construction and had no use in the game. I bought 100's of 1000's on region wide buy orders at under 100ISK p/u, on the basis Eve wouldn't have stuff in the game for no use.
Made over 100B on that.
All the best money making items in the game were either hidden game mechanic flaws (item had no use at that time, Insurance Exchange Rate, etc..), or NPC purchase items.
Also made a killing with civilian afterburners. Stockpiled over 500K units. |

Many moons ago I used to deal in harvester drones, at one point buying from one guy in a station only to sell them to the next in same station at 20% markup. Granted by todays standards 100m aint much but in those days (2003) it wasnt bad isk at all! |

Spent the first 80 mil I ever made on a Typhoon deep in Metropolis. Found out they were being bought for 100mil in rens. A few trade runs later I was a hundred million isk richer. Not much in comparison to some of the trades here, but A), I'm not a trader, and B) that was my second month playing. I was pretty happy at the time. |

I hate to tell you this, but you were duped. Scammers will put up a false (highly inflated) buy order for an obscure item and a set number of units that you must have to sell. Then they'll put that item in a contract for an equally inflated price, but slightly lower than the buy order. You check the market, see a massive buy order, then snatch up the item only to see the buy order vanish the moment the contract clears.
TL;DR: If you see a contract selling for a lower price than a buy order, it's a scam. Better luck next time. |

Both
The buy order has an extremely high "minimum qty" or an extremely "good" buy order price for an item.
The person selling it has margin trading trained, and does not have enough isk in their wallet to pay for the order (As margin trading reduces the % of isk you need in escrow)
When you try to sell to their buy order, there is insufficient isk to cover the order, and the order cancels.
The contract is usually set up by the same person, who has overpriced the item, so you end up holding an overpriced (usually) crappy item, or a whole load of useless stuff. |

ok cool, i thought you would be able to sell something and loose the item without getting the money, but it seems the only thing we need to pay attention is to not buy overpriced because of some fake market buy orders

Traded a short story about financial innovation and riches for some B.
Traded a few dozen Amarr Shuttles and a bit of ISK to set up some contracts again for some B.
Traded about an hour of precious sleep fast-talking my way into 200M and a Mackinaw, too.
Decimal place trades here and there, made about a B off of Adaptive Invulnerability Field IIs.
I haven't done anything really special but I enjoy my little successes.
My best item passively earns me about 25M/slot (50M/day, one buy one sell) despite moving good volume with great (350%) margins. 'Passive' because I have no competition whatsoever in it. Which alone means I can fund PLEX with no other Market activities. I kind of laugh about that, but I don't consider it to be noteworthy.
I'm envious of all the skilled M&D-famous folk who have such great stories. :P

When the mining forman mindlinks jumped up in price, I flew all over Eden finding them at cheap sell prices. 1 here ,2 there. I found 7 or 8, and I had 3 of my own in some random station can.
Also once, I found 4 Eos' for 50 mil each. Sadly it took me over 4 months to get rid of them, but I tripled my isk. (No wonder the guy dumped them) |

About 2 months after starting Eve I set up a region buy order for harvester mining drones in Lonetrek. Someone sold me 3 at 90m each in Sobaseki, whcih I flew 1 jump to Jita and sold at about 170m each. That was the start of my still young trading career. |

Jita direct sales. For thoose who don't remember. They would buy items between sell and buy orders.
I was producing and easily manufactered item that cost like 8mill to make. Buy orders was like 9.5mill and someone had bought up the sell orders, so the sell price was around 14-15mill. I put up a fake buy order for around 10mill, contact my jita direct sales guy. Unloaded 1k items, for something between sell and buy(11mill prob).
I know the price will crash within the next few days, so I fill the buy orders while im at it. Pretty sure he bought some of my sell orders also to keep the price from dumping. |

I love people discussing how it's impossible to turn up a profit over Trit sales and similar, when it's easy to make 10-20% and the market liquidity allows to dump tons of stock with little notice.
