Heya!
Is it a norm in EVE, or it's just my comp? ... I'm getting disconnected every now and then ....
Sometimes 3 times per hour, sometimes once every 3 hours ... but still ....
It's not a software client crash with explict error messages - no
I just get dropped from server to login screen with message server connection lost. Game just plays as it should, then I notice that there are no new chat messages ... then EVE stops reacting on 'Show Info' commands (ship still flies, cursor moves around, ...) .. and then in approx 30 sec I get dropped to login screen with Server disconnected message :/ Once I log in - I'm where I left off 1min ago.
This seems to happen more frequently if I Alt-tab out of EVE window to read some boards in external browser (I'm running EVE windowed).
Anyone else having this? ... anyone knows how to fight this?

I was having the same exact issues ..... I wound up being that I had a bad cable modem. Replaced the modem ... no issues since! :) Hope that helps.

Cable modems ... cant be the issue here :/
I'm playing form my office network, we're an ISP ... I'm on 100Mbps LAN with even more bandwidth to EVE servers.
Could it be some firewall issues?

I have also started to get this annoying disconnections a few days ago...
I havent changed a bit in my network hardware (router and ADSL-modem) and Eve have been running smoothly since 2003..
Now it can stop at a gate on autopilot, and if i try to issue manual orders or toggle autopilot... the client just drops out. With the server lost message. Or sometimes if i open market, or character sheet... window appear but no data, i can wait forever. If I then try to close the character sheet or market, eve sends me back to windows...
damn annoying it is... sometimes it stay stable for an hour, more often i can only do a few things and then off to windows...

I am using a D-Link ADSL router.

soo ....
Any 'Dev ideas' on this?
Should I open some specific ports in Firewall? ... if so - why it works at all with them ports closed
or it's about some connection inactivity timeouts? in my PC or firewall? .. because it seems I drop more often the less I do in EVE ... like while mining - I just stare at monitor and wait - that's how disconnects happen the most often
Than God I at least dont get disconnects while missioning (prolly because pressing more buttons then ;)

Oh, well .. i'm happy that i'm not the only one with this prob
Got a cable modem and a wlan router ... worked the first few days just fine ... then continoues disconnects ... quite annoying - especially in fights ...
didn't changed anything from my hardware or software setup BEFORE this problem ...
the interesting things is ... yesterday afternoon i tried to play - every 10 to 20 minutes disconnect ...
in the night [around 20:30 in game time] i tried it again and played without problems until 01:30 ... then user quit
today the same problem as yesterday
i tried the telnet and tracert stuff from the support page ... sometimes i can use telnet but can't login with the client ... tracert seems never really work ... after a few jumps i got a "*" instead of the ms, but this is EVERY time i tried it, even if i could play eve ... i'm wondering if i'm the only one suffering from this, cause it's two jumps before the aorta.net (i'm not sure but this seems quite highlevel in the hirachy)
i hope THIS problem can be solved

For the OP working in his office, it is highly likely that the firewall is closing your connections. Depending upon the hardware and its configuration this could be because of inactivity. We've had similar non-game related problems in our dmz and ultimately had to configure the firewall to allow persistent connections on the ports of interest. Sorry I don't know which ports Eve uses.
For those having trouble at home and using a home/office router, upgrade your firmware. I had no end of connection problems with online games until I updated the firmware on my router (first a Linksys, more recently a DLink). Once I did that I never had a problem. Granted, you may be having trouble with any number of things, such as the built in firewall settings on some routers, but generally these tend to be configured by default to be permissive. Still, if a firmware upgrade doesn't correct the trouble, you may wish to investigate the similar port/permission issue on the firewall that is usually built into the router.
Hope this is of some help.
Good luck.

Edited by: Karma on 26/12/2005 11:43:52 I used to have this issue too, a lot. SWG, WoW, Eve... not so much when just surfing though, or perhaps I just didn't notice it then? since the down-time was less than 20 seconds. (just enough for the games to thing no-one's home). once per hour, with a slight lag of about a minute per day.
thing I did was update the firmware of the router I had set up. not dropped even once since, and that was over half a year ago. _________________ No Worries |

Connection lost.
This can have a few causes.
A: A bad ISP (internet service provider) this means your internet provider is giving you a bad connection.
- 56K/Dailup users can have this when connecting over long distances with lowquality coper.
- ADSL/Cable users can have this with bad configured/instaled or FUBAR modems
B: To many other programs and/or users (when behind a router) use the internet connection and thereby stressing the internet connection and hardware.
Incase it is A, please contact your ISP.
If it is B, then I can provide some standard solutions.
First check for programs that are using up alot of bandwith. (Getright, Flashget and many others) When playing EVE you can still download but do not use the maximum bandwith.
Secondly check for programs that are using up alot of connections. Why connections? This has to do with the fact that your hardware (modem, hub, switch and router) usualy only support around the 50 to 256 connections.
Every connection to internet is a connection, so if you are talking to 10 people over msn, then that are 10 connections to the internet. No problem yet.
If you use bittorent, things will chance drasticly. Bittorent has the bad habbit of openening more then 100 connections at once. Your hardware will hold out for 15 min up to a houre, but after that I MUST drop connections. Programs that suffer alot in these situations are IRC clients, MSN and last but not least MMO Game clients (including EVE Online)
How can I see that there are to many connections open?
Press the windows Start button and select "Run.." and type "CMD" an pres Ok. You wil get a DOS/Comandline box, there you can type the word "NETSTAT" and press Enter. This will show a list of connections that windows and programs within windows have made, where the are conencting to and what there status is. A normal healthy internet connection wil have 4 to 10 connections.
Keep in mind you have to do this on every computer that is connected to the same internet connection.
HELP! When the list never ends and you count more then 50 connections or can't even keep track of them, then you know something went wrong. Looks like a program is using to many connections.
Programs known to use alot of connections:
- Skype
- Bittorent (Torrentstorm, Azureus, ¦torrent)
- Mallware, Trojanhorses, DDoS backdoor software and many more!

I've only been playing this game for a few days, but I've had lots of these disconnections already. Usually it happens when trying to dock or undock; and for some reason, when I reconnect my ship appears to be flying slowly through the middle of nowhere...then it comes out of an invisible warp at wherever I was last. One time my ship got blown up because it disconnected me during a battle. If so many people have this problem, they really need to release a patch which makes it so your ship is teleported to the last station you were at if the connection is lost. If that's not realistic enough, it could just warp and dock there automatically...it's not like anyone in their right mind would want to park their ship out in space and quit the game. As it is, I have to avoid difficult fights because of the disconnection risk...
(I have tried all the things recommended in the FAQs; it doesn't happen quite as much now, but it does still happen.)

Edited by: V''Lar on 18/02/2006 20:02:31 Yeah, I have the exact same thing, I can be doing anything, mining, fighting, or talking in a chat. And I ususally realise it when I am mining and it keeps mining, and mining, and mining, but no materials is getting to my cargohold. Or when I am fighting, my ship keeps firing and the enemies keep flying around me but they take no damage and I loose no ammo and if I suddenly make a command, I get dropped out into windows.
This hasen't always been the case for me, it worked fine until around 18:00 GMT +1 february 17. And I haven't done any hardware or software -changes at all.
It's really making me angry, and I am getting near my next mothly payment and if they want me to keep paying up they better help us solve this issue or they'll loose me and all my friends (Since I will tell them the game is buggy piece of **** and is not worth paying for).

I have this problem too; makes it very hard to do any deadspace missions ingame. I talked to some people and they heartily assured me that I was the only person in the world who had this problem...but looking at the forums it seems that isn't the case.
I've run the game on two different computers now, on two very different networks (one is DSL with a router, the other is a direct T3/multiple-T1) and I have the same problem. No other games or applications have this problem. When I played WoW, I had about 2-5 disconnects total in 13 months; in EVE I get that many in an hour.
It probably has to do with the port choices; WoW chose some fairly obscure ports, but EVE appears to run on a port normally associated with Quake. Since Quake was a little famous for eating up bandwidth, routers and firewalls probably recognize this port much better than WoWs. That's a totally off-the-wall guess, but the difference in disconnects between the two games is really quite dramatic...it really seems like it must be some difference in the ports used or the network code.

Eve uses port 26000. As for the disconnects, first check firewall rules, especially if you are running the windows firewall. I too had these issues with the windows software firewall running. turned that off...........no more discos.
(I use nix for other stuff, so my windows side is eve+wintendo only).
Here is a link with info on that. Windows firewall info

if you are getting your internet through an ethernet connection try this:
Control Panel--> network connections --> right click on your active Local Area Connection --> configure your ethernet card --> on the Advanced tab there might be a "Checksum Offload" feature. If its enabled select disable and apply the new settings.
This particular setting is the reason for disconnects (but not for all routers/lan cards) on WoW and Lineage2. There is a small possibility that it creates this disconnection problem. If someone can try it out please post your results.

Mine was an ISP issue. I *****ed about it, it went nowhere, one day it sort of cleared up.
Yeah I know.
I have a feeling it's BT messing with their lines more than anything else, causing just enough packet loss to disconnect.
God I hate the infrastructure in this country.

Had exactly the same problem myself, was dropping every 5 mins (litereally, it was awful.)
I used PingPlotter and found the likely cause to be a node on the route dropping 70% ish packets. Contacted my ISP, they said they wouldn't help because I wasn't using thier modem/router but a Netgear one and that could be causing the problem. I argued it for a couple of days and by then the issue had gone.
