Ok,
I've been skilling like mad recently, and want to know if I've missed any important skills? I mine in 0.5 space and the rats here are fairly low, my drones seem to sort them out. I mine in a Retriever medium barge with two strip miners, and my ore per minute turnout is 570m3.
I mine Omber, which as far as I know is the best ore I can find in my current system. I don't feel comfortable taking a medium barge into any lower space to be honest, not until I've mined at least 12mil worth of ISK to replace it if it does get lost.
So with my following skills, am I missing anything?
Drones lvl 3
Mining Drones lvl 2
Scout Drones lvl 3
Mining Lvl 4
Astrogeology Lvl 4
Refining Lvl 3
Mining Barge lvl 3

Get your refining upto lvl5 and Refining eff. upto at least lvl4..... It pays off in isk in the long run.

Hi
You should look into refining efficiency and specialise in specialist ore refining skills so you get as much as you can get out of each roid when refining it.
i.e. Plagioclase processing
Omber processing etc.
I would also get your drone skills up so you can fire out more mining drones. Get your skills up so you can use tech 2 mining drones, they are much better than harvestors as they take up half the room in your drone bay.

what im wondering is should i spend the month or so it's gonna take me to train up to the heavy barge or train otehr things?

The large barge is a long time to train for but is worth it if your sure mining in a barge is what you want to do.
Sounds like your wanting to get into production so this will be a great way boosting your mineral count
Train up for modulated mining strippers and use crystals with them. This will alo increase your ore input count.

Celestial, I'd say you've taken the track many people have, and thats make getting a bigger ship a higher priority than the rest of your skills. I'd recommend you get your support skills caught up, before you go for a larger ship.
I'm still mining in a destroyer, and hauling with an industrial, but can easily make 15m in one day, because my refining and other support skills are high. I've taken the other extreme from you, and focused on training more. Sure, I could quickly get a bigger ship now, and will soon, but when I do get it, I'll be in a better position to maximize it's usefullness.
There is no right or wrong way, it's all about preference. We are all paying money to play this game, so fun must come first!!!

I totally agree with this comment. My only wish is that I did it sooner rather than later. Another thing to maybe consider is raising your mining barge and mining drone skill by 1 and 2 levels respective. Both will give slightly more minerals per mine cycle.
Finally - totally go for the processing skills. ATM I'm able to use T1 crystals upto and including kernite, reprocess at 100% with "nowt taken ouwt" and can generally make around 5mil an hour mining just veld, scord and plag!

at the mo im training drones lvl 5, so I can move onto drone interfacing because I mine solo and need protection i 0.5.
I have another corp member who is training up to refining lvl 5, but do u think I should also do this? So I can get special strip miners?

i would say you need to aim to get mining and mining barge both up to lvl 5, astr up to lvl 5, then try and get mining drones up to lvl 4, drones lvl 5, then some drone inerfacing as well, this way you can hold more drones, and have like 2 heavies deffending you and the rest miner drones.
refining should be lvl 5, and RE should be lvl 4, this way you only need to train each ore specific skill up to lvl 1 to get 100% on the stuff you refine ( this of course will change if you dont have standings with the station owners/ use a less efficient station)
you've made a good start on the skills but to be a really good miner yopu need to maximize all the skills you use, this includes drone skills as when mining in a barge they are important, i'd say scout drone can stay at 3, but miner drones should eventually be gotten to 5, heavy drones 3 or 4 and droner interfacing at lvl 4 as well.
obviously this is a massive undertaking and will take you months to complete, but with my current set up i mine in over 4000m3 / 3 minute cycle. thats with msm II's and drones!
also dont forget not to neglect your engineering and electronic skills as these not only make it easier to fit the ship they make it eaiser to run it as well, the last thing you want is for ur cap to die and u have to wait 30 seconds to restart one of your miners.

After spending 2 years training combat, I am finally turning carebear and training up for barges. I should be able to use small barges tonight and medium barge at some point tomorrow. I already can use strip miners.
I can make 15m/hour just using an osprey mining crokite and bistot. My utlimate goal is to be able to suck crokite with MSMII in a large barge. I have no idea how long that is going to take. Astrogeology 5, refining 5, refining efficiency 5, large barge 5. That is a TONN of training. Maybe in 2 months I will have all that, and start making the mad iskies.
I figure after being able to fly every galante ship, almost every caldari ship, a tonn of minmatar ones, adn 7m in gunnery, its time to focus on the peacefull aspects of the game. Need to make money to pay for my piracy binges too.

Your only missing out on the more advanced skills. With my Covetor 3xMSM with tech 2 lenses 10 drones and my alt in his apoc i can easily fill 4 cans an hour. You should be able to manage 2 an hour with no difficulty.

Ur not the best minning char i've seen u need 2 train astro lvl5 minning lvl 5 metalurgy lvl 3 4 crystals industry lvl 5 & barge lvl 5 so u can use the large barge then u'll be a good minning char & offcourse reff & reff eff lvl 5 along with scrapmetal if u wish 4 100% reffining
