There would appear to be quite a number of mercenary outfits out there these days, and being a potential shopper I was curious as to which outfits are the best of the best, the crŞme de la crŞme, the squads that really separate the men from the boys. When I part with my hard-earned cash I want to know it's being spent well. I have a couple of names that I've snatched out of conversations here and there and of course from browsing these very forums. Let me know what you think:
The MC: These fellas would appear to be the numero uno when it comes to blanket destruction, often complimenting their latest contract with sexily made films dripping with bravado and masculinity.
GH-SC: Wicked, wicked fellas that's for sure. I came across that article in PC Gamer and I couldn't stop grinning. Are they really as effective as their PR makes them out to be?
KIA: Pure unflinching adrenaline. These guys appear to exude raw power, charging into battle like a pack of axe-wielding Vikings. A big turn on, but how good are they in a stand-up fight?
Battle Angels: Mmmm, I love the name. I hadn't heard of these heavenly creatures until quite recently when they were linked with the MC on operations in Geminate. Do they mean business?
Cult Of Cthulhu: What an odd name, but I most certainly enjoy their posts and films, and they would appear to have an impeccable reputation that precedes them wherever they may roam.
Tell me what you think. Argue, bicker and debate; I want to know more about these soldiers dressed in black.

KIA may be, I've actually heard of them.
Merc Coalition maybe I've heard of them Err I think .
But come on guys Theres a massive difference between Mercs and Pirates. I've seen Quite few Pirate corps named already ! |

i wouldnt count KIA in, they have shown themselves to be very lame by asking for 1v1 and then call in their buddies.
they should disband and hide in npc corps for a long time until noone remembers them.
if you need small or big destruction on your enemies with some degree of quality service i would say MC as they can do small contracts with big ones as well.

whether you have heard of a corp or not dosent mean they are or aren't effective and there isnt that great a difference between mercs and pirates, pirates kill because they like the addreneline rush of killing and they like making money, same reason the mercs go out taking contracts, for the rush of killing and to make money...

Their numbers sure are impressive. If their rates reflect the fact they firmly assert themselves as the best pvp group in the game, they may be quite costly though

In case you don't bother to keep up with events, the particular person who sullied KIA's name with that event is no longer there.
You'll find few CEOs ingame who are stricter than Eddz on ettiquete in wartimes.

And who are you anyway?
To the OP.
I'd say MC are the best place to start. They're by far the biggest merc unit and certainly the richest.
KIA, CoC and Finite Horizon are three very good merc corps who inflict a lot of damage for a reasonable price.

KIA 4tw
They're crazy and will fight even when they're totally outnumbered. They may not be as effective as loading up the low slots with WCS and warping shooting, warping out -- but they'll have the most fun =) They're also the best looking merc corp.
Also, everyone's done stuff they're not proud of. You probably tapped that fat chick at the office party last december....yea you know you did it.

Edited by: Shin Ra on 13/10/2005 17:47:21 The Mercenary coalition: A group of 4 merc corps, although really just 1 big merc corp. They deal with mostly empire work. So if you wanted to attack FE, They would hang out in Obe-Traisy-Jita area. They do lots of ganks with HACs/AFs. They kills a lot of indys, shuttles, frigs and cruisers. They do not kill many battleships and do not usually enter deep 0.0 space
KIA: Don't really fit the profile of a mercenary in that they are considered quite honorable and upstanding people. They usuually use gunship Battleships to get kills. Although their effectiveness on some contracts is questionable. Usually fight in empire/0.0 chokepoints
Cult of Cuthulu: Quite skilled players who use cov ops + tanked apoc + gankships to get kills. Effective tactic in small skirmishes and do quite well. Again tho, actual number of kills isnt the best. Usually fight in empire
BURN EDEN: The single most hated corporation in this game. Trying to fill the role of the badass merc. Proper indiscriminate killers. Rarely fight in empire. Usually found deep in 0.0 hitting the enemy where it hurts. Doesn't kill very many indys or small ships, but kill way more BS than any other merc corp. Also, the first merc corp to kill a Freighter. They differ from the other merc corps by not giving the target a "good fight", a genuine annyoyance for anyone to fight.

The MC: Very professional, flexible, have good numbers, totally reliable to be effective at whatever they sign on for.
GH-SC: Having hired them in the past I can safely say that if you want your enemies to have fair and honorable PvP you should hire any of the other merc corps. However if you want your enemies to have to deal with relentless griefers who'll hound them from the game and deal in psychological warfare, espionage, corp theft etc you should hire GH-SC.
KIA: Not too sure about their reliability after the whole BoB fiasco, but they are damned effective when they're on a roll.
Battle Angels: No clue.
Cult Of Cthulhu: Small but extremely deadly, some of the best killers and anti-pirates around, I'd hire these guys if I wanted to hurt say, Evolution.

The MC- Very well organised, will get the job done and well....reassuringly expensive
Kia- Had some bad luck recently but work like machines on a contract
Battle Angels- I heard the did very well against Stain, and are now working with MC so must be doing something right
COC- My favourite mercs, very highley skilled and effective.
Burn Eden- Well if their stats are correct they are the most effective mercs, abit loud for my liking but they are definatly a corp that your enemy will hate fighting guaranteed

The MC: Havn't heard much from MC in a while, I'm sure they are still kicking somebody around. Videos are cool and they certainly have the numbers to tackle most any job.
GH-SC: I have seen corps disband rather than fight them before. That about says it all.
KIA: Don't know much about KIA, I thought they were more of a PvP corp than mercs.
Battle Angels: I know a few of the pilots in BAPWN personally and I wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of their fire, dunno about the corp as a whole but they have some tough pilots.
Cult Of Cthulhu: Mitchman is sexy. Pretty much the original mercs, smaller than MC but of equal or much greater quality.

For a full scale, large numbers war, MC
For smaller fights, but extremely deadly, CoC
For personal issues, hatred, and to destroy corps utterly - GH-SC |

MC = some very good individual pvpers. Alot of marginals though in the ranks. Also, prudish when it comes to really fighting...not much risk taking.
GH-SC = A case study on how to parlay ONE INSTANCE of marked success into a reputation :)
KIA and CC = unknown to me
Battle Angels = The best of the best. If you know anything about where these guys came from you know that they have a long long long history of fighting alongside each other. These guys are the leadership nucleus of the group that kept FIX intact during seige from just about every entity in the galaxy from CA to BoB and everyone else who was attacked them.

Just to add a bit of clarification..
Yes we have done mercenary work in the past (the real kind, with clients and not just targets), and I have no problems with doing it in the future. However, I wouldn't call us mercs.. more like opportunists. We're more inclined to work on some sort of mutual benefit agreement than pure isk, since we're all quite well off anyways.
If you need individuals whacked then you should probably mail me or Viceroy, we're into that sort of thing; and its not like you need a legion of 7ft goliath alliance-crushers that fart lightning and chew through bone for most jobs when one will do
Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning.

The MC: Very good at what they do but i might be bias
GH-SC: Well got into Pc gamer which means they must have done something right.
KIA: Very good pvper's and mercs will take on most things flying.
Battle Angels: From what ive seen very good at what they do and their targets should be scared.
Cult Of Cthulhu: Old merc corp small but from what ive heard very effective.
Burn Eden: Think they Stole Ginger M's Ego along the way, also surprised they get time to fight with all the forum posting they do.

Heh, Cummilla has actively spoken out against us on quite a few occasions in the past, which makes me quite curious whose alt she is, and what it is we did to her main to warrant such consistent ire. I would ask her to contact any of the corporations listed under the Guiding Hand's 'completed contracts' in the mercenary thread, and try to stand by her claim of GH-SC having but one success, but I fear that with many of those entities being crushed at our hands, she might have a hard time getting answers ;)

Alot of people hate them and so they`ll try all they can to counter BE - which also means they have to spend alot of time doing so = a pain in the arse

I think the problem with Burn Eden is that a lot of people wouldn't trust them to actually do what they got hired to do, personally I probably would, but I'd only consider them after having tried someone who has a reputation for straight dealing like KIA or MC or CoC..
If BE do have such a reputation then by all means correct me

I used to fight NSN a great deal and have nothing but respect for them. Their presence in MC really is all the recommendation it needs (no offense to the rest of you MCers, you're all tops, too!). KIA have also personally impressed me with their tactics and capabilities on the battleground. I haven't run into CoC personally, so I can't give an opinion either way.
So, yeah. MC or KIA should make you a happy merc customer.

Please note that this was not a contract these guys took on, as the corp in question war-decced them. I should know, I was there. My old main was in that corp. Also bear in mind that it was a corp of 99% noobs, led by one outstanding player, and the BS mentioned was the only one in the corp. Also bear in mind that he was not 'broken' by the events, but went on to get the corp into an alliance, and win a further two corp wars before i biomassed that char. Last i heard he was in People's Front of Judea. Nothing against GH-SC, but just thought i'd better get that there episode straight
EDIT: btw guys, gj with the PCG op, was nice to see a name i knew from a game i love in there.

Mc: Veyr respectable pvpers and good at what they do.
Kia: flew with these guys for 3 months and any fair engagement they simply dominated if the target even showed Keep in mind you did have films of kia getting owned but when youre fleet commander ctd's what can you do??

BA hunt pirates to fill in time. You'd be a fool for thinking they disappeared without reason.
If you were not to mention Battle Angels you'd be overlooking some of the finest PvP'ers and small gang tacticians in Eve.
MC will soon be alliance killers though. Something no other Merc out-fit will be able to achieve imo.

We got a contract FYI. Piratekilling is our holliday between contracts.
While you are at it, go to your 150km BM, convo ppl in local with your alts to make them warp to your POS and while u sit there, go check the killboards about the outcome of BA and Mafia.
When you are done, open your mouth again..pls...
I never camp (snipe) at 150km, i think its very boring and its very dangarous. I dont have an alt and Mafia dont have a POS. About the killboards, i never look at them (its alot of killboards), but i know that you got some easy kills when Mafia was outnumbered. So the only thing i know is that you where around and disapeard when the war was on, and when all the Mafia members gathered from all around.
Its very easy for mercs to say, "we got a contarct so we had to go".. "do you fire at me today because we killed you yesterday, yesterday we had a contract on you but we love you today" .... and bla bla bla..
The thing is that only 2-3 merc corps/alliances are worth to mention, the rest sux and are mercs wana be.

Following the rather nicely edited VOTF vid, I watched quite a lot of the MC activity in empire when Yulai was the centre of the universe and I was always rather diappointed in them - watching them sit at gates and gank shuttles rather than 'stick it to them' (the risk-averse method as mentioned already in this thread) seemed to be the preferred tactic and I sat in an amarr system not far from Yulai once while Selenee in her Mega plus 4 others in cruisers and inties sat trying to get an FA Scorp that had them running around the system for about 20mins before they gave up and left - one of the funniest things I've seen in eve and I curse myself for not having had fraps at the time. Personally I believe their reputation for pvp > their ability.
However, as has been said - they get the job done - I guess it's the results that count and not how they are achieved. And on paper the MC stats look good. The battleships killed/lost stats always look good but then again they seem to use HACs more than BS nowadays and I've noticed they lose quite a few of those. They are very professional, make good (if, I suspect, very biased) vids and the website is nice :)
I watched Burn Eden once torment an alliance fleet for what seemed like hours - with dampening/jamming ravens and a cov ops to warp their fleet around more than 100km from the much larger fleet, it was very effective - they have a really bad rep but if you just want to completely take the p**s out of your enemy, they'd be an apporporiate choice. Not sure I'd trust them with my isk though... :D
I've never actually seen KIA fight but, to some, their repution went down a little with the abortive attempt at the BoB contract and also their current 'payback' activities against PA seems a little unprofessional IMO but I've heard they are pretty professional otherwise and their forum behaviour certainly backs that up.

As Boldyn and Tadis pointed out, the Battle Angels have fun killing pirates in between our contracts. MAFIA was by no means the only object of our attention, but we were delighted when they war declared us in response.
Let me assure you, Mr. Jankolas, that we did not leave from any pvp pressure you brought to bear, but rather for reasons such as this and this.
What follows is MAFIA ships killed and Battle Angels ships lost while we were messing around. I hope this paints a clearer picture of what actually happened for you, Mr. Jankolas.
KILL/LOSS Assault frigate: 1 / 1 Battleship: 8 / 0 Capsule: 8 / 0 Destroyer: 1 / 0 Frigate: 1 / 0 Interceptor: 1 / 2 Mining barge: 2 / 0 Shuttle: 2 / 0
I also captured Gyzb0's tempest, which was amusing, since usually the pirates are trying to get their prey to eject, not the other way around.
Ah.
Mr. Jankolas.
Our latest contract is up.
See you soon.
Minig barge, i did not even knew some one in Mafia flew them. Well, nice stats, for you that is.. and yes, c u around Mr. Debreault, then you might get a litle harder fight than Gyzbo`s

We fought with Cult and against BA. Cult were very good to fly with and I woulnt want to be on the recieving end. Battle Angels I can say are the most annoying oponents you will ever meet, due to Kodos and his stats they only ever fight when they have better odds on the whole. They have some very good individuals who do fight solo (Makar spings to mind) and basically they gave us lots of problems. Unfortunatly for us last occasion we had very few of our main active pvpers around to fight them. Having said that if you want to annoy a corp or alliance I higly recommend them they know their stuff and it was fun fighting them.

You assume too much. Our empire war method has always been about coverage. You can't shut-down empire by sticking in a big blob and waiting for the target to come up with their own fleet. We have pilots roaming all over empire picking off soft targets at the same time as we have a fleet engaging the alliance's PvPers. Clearly if you hang around the hub systems, you will mainly see the former happening. Alliance PvPers don't tend to hang around Yulai in large numbers. However, that doesn't mean that we were not engaging their PvPers head on elsewhere.

I realise that the amount of hype we receive makes us an easy target, but I can't help thinking your being a little unfair. KIA are a well oiled killing machine. I know they spanked Ushra'Khan's butt and taught us a lot about coordinated fighting. Fortunately, we learned very fast and turned the tide. I have nothing but respect for this fine unit. They were professional and always acted as the businessmen they were, not just killers.

There is an insane amount of truth in the above post.
The MC is a pure military machine. The MC pools its resources to ensure we are as self-reliant as possible. The thing that makes the MC so strong, IMO, is our recruiting procedures. Each MC corp maintains a very low influx of very dedicated and mature people.
Battle Angels are one of the best run "new" merc corps in EVE. Thier pilots are pros all the way. Talk them down all you want. Thier results are self-explainatory.
Guding Hand Social Club are the most ruthless corp in the game. Istvaan would eat babies and sell thier mothers into slavery if a client wished it.
KIA have Eddz, and where Eddz goes the Angel of Death follows. **** KIA off at your own peril.
Burn Eden is not what I'd classify as a pure mercenary corp, but they are known to take jobs for money. Faced with them, you have two choices: frigate blob with -6 scramblers to lock them down and kill them or just self-destruct your larger ships to save the hassle of being a victim to thier infuriating hit and run tactics.
Comsic Fusion seems to be making some waves lately and has a few famous names, but I really don't know much about them.
Celtic Anarchy isn't a bad crew at all either. Apparently they gave some hurt to F.E. recently. Thier CEO is a great guy and seems to have his eyes on the future.
CoC just get better with age. A truly class act. -

It was actually a compliment Boldyn but I forgot to mention Battle Angels resident Donut ie you. Get over the fact that I didnt mention you as one of the good pilots, as mainly we were in agreement that you,d be better off mining. The truth is you guys spent most of your time switching between SS and your station to change ships dependent on what we were in, its not a new tactic but you guys did it very well and your attacks were well organised. I do recall your own attacks on me not being so well done though :)

Mercenary Coalition: The big boys whatever way you look at it, they pack the big hardware and have the manpower to pull it off. Practically created the role of 'professional mercenary' in EVE, these guys are the true heavyweights of the business. Oh, and Seleene is damn fine for a Minmatar lady...
GH-SC: I've read every issue of PC Gamer UK for the last seven years, and the article these guys earned was one of the most excellent I've seen, resulting in a marked jump in players. The ultimate morale-busters of EVE, these cheeky chaps are making waves in MMO history.
KIA: They've had a few hiccups recently, but they're back and kicking ass once again. Sown up tighter than a milk-maids corset, they'll bring the fight to your doorstep no questions asked.
Battle Angels: An absolutely fantastic squad of guys to fly with, a lot of hard work has gone into getting us where we are today and I wouldn't want to fly with anybody else. Our speciality is small squad combat, sautÚed in a sauce of heavy fire and electronic warfare.
Cult Of Cthullhu: From what I understand a small and highly effective outfit, with a rather charismatic set of leaders. Other than that, my information is thin.
BURN EDEN: They most certainly get the kills, and their tactics can be irritating to come up against. However they're missing one critical element that keeps them from being 'up there'; dignity. If their conduct took place in a professional manner, I'd have a lot more respect for their outfit.

Well now with first hand information , my opinions:
MC: Very professional. They are indeed a military machine, good at annihilating opponents that fight back. They do fly expensive ships but this is not the employer's concern. If you have the isk, they are certainly worthy.
BAPWN: Very effective. Considering the size, here you get the most bang for the buck.
K.O.S: Didn't get to learn more about them but they seem well organized and on the right track.
BYDI: Not your usual merc corp. Don't expect them to play by the book and that leads to emotional stress from the target.
Life is a joke, but I don't feel like laughing |

Skillwise I'd say we are quite good, but we have not yet achieved the organization or dedication that groups suchs as cult, BA, or especially MC have achieved. As such we are not yet up to par as some of these other fine merc groups. We don't have multiple t2 BPOs, or dreads, or production alts. However what we do have is a bunch of people who like making things go boom, and therefore prolly don't cost a billion plus to hire like some other groups . Although our current targets stopped tryin to fight us, and I got bored and had to go on a bit of a killing spree up north today.

Just look at what they have done to ASCN, with their tiny 10 man corp. While MC is excellent at what it does, harrassing empire dwellers and the fringes of 0.0, and lowering the overall morale of a group, Burn Eden actually sits in their space killing all of them.
Yeah, Ravens do nice damage on bs. Surely BE know their stuff(their ship), and Shin Ra is one of the funniest posters on these forums. Okay, they go into my book also then.

Most of the corps that have been named are very good, in there own way. I've been in Burn Eden for alot longer than people think.. and Ive been in over 6 contracts, our price is very high, and we have 100% fullfillment rate.(get the job done). But noone wants to admit they hired us.(lol) Not everyone in Burn Eden spams fourms, chat, ect.. so please refer to thoses players that do and not the whole corp. MC: Good for Big targets Burn Eden: We have made Big targets feel the pain aswell.
Thoses are my top 2 pics, but Im kinda bias.
