Edited by: Muthsera on 14/10/2005 01:52:38 I come from a very remote part of Norway. I know a thing or two about strange scandinavian costoms. But eating rotten shark meat is not one of them. I just saw an report about some icelandic festival where this is still upheld. I have a hard time accepting smalahuvu (cocked sheap head) and gravlaks (burried salmon) but rotten shark? SoonÖ

The sheep's head is called Svi and the salmon's spelled graflax.
And the shark is not rotten, it's.. erm.. had something done to it. Something I can't recall at the moment.
And, is it me, or is it odd to be perfectly fine with eating a sheep's back, limbs, and in some cases intestines, but not the head?

hmmm, from where in Norway do you come?
remember we got smalahove (sheepshead with brain and teh works) and lutefisk (fish that has been put in lye for a while)
The last one can be pretty fatal if not prepared properly...

I tried it at last years fanfest. It's one thing i'll never be silly enough to do again. I probably wouldn't have done it the first time if it weren't for half a bottle of Jack

Is it rotten, or fermented?
As for strange food I won't try again, I think any Japanese players will back me up when I say... Natto.

thing is a Age ago. the people had to eat everything it cud to stay alive.
thing with shark is that a fresh shark flesh is Toxic. like drinking and drugs at the same time. just not as plesurable and lot worse in the long term.
so the only way to eat the bugger is to make it "rot" in the ground or some other method i cant remember atm.
as for we are still eating shark. well we only do that few times a year. and personally i think it is just a good exscuse for the old timers to get drunk while they are at it. |

makes a lot more sence now. It had to be drinking involved. heheh..
Also.. about the raw fish bit from a still warm fish.. Well.. no. I can't verrify that. And I very much doubt it. SoonÖ

Edited by: Pete Tyyr on 15/10/2005 01:08:10 When I was a kid, one of my teachers told me that sharks had to be kept hanging for a few weeks/months before it could be eaten. And he also added that in order to remove the "poison" and get a better taste, he urinated on the meat every now and then.
Oddly enough, about 4 years later, I ate shark for the first time, loved it... ate more. And I've never been able to eat it since.
But haggis, intestines, fat, blood and some other stuff. Stirred up and put inside the stomach-pouch or whatever it's called. Boiled, cold, fried... doesn't matter. It's always good. One of the better meals I can think of.

Just for your information. All you steak lovers some of the most tender flavorful beef is aged. So you want to guess what aging meat is? You ever have a steak that was so tender you could cut it with a fork?.....Its because it was allowed to rot (aged).
I buy a calf and pay someone to raise it feed it for a year and then I have it slaughtered and trimmed. Part of the deal is to have it aged in a room for a few days and even a few weeks at just above freezing.
As a matter of fact if you go to the supermarket/butcher NEVER buy the pretty pink beef steak. I dont care if its the most expensive peice of meat you've ever bought, if you buy it pink it will be the thoughest most bland hunk of crap you've ever eaten. The more brown the meat is the more flavor it has and tender it is. If I do buy steak in a package I'll age it sometimes for 3-5 days in the fridge.
So personaly I'd give the "aged" shark a try (if I was going). If its a tradition you know it wont kill you. And some cultures may look at our paying a premium price for rotten beef a little strange to say the least.

Hey, at least with hot dogs, the horror is hidden well below the surface. You buy it assuming it's pork or beef, and don't really think about the horse, pigeon, rat and unwanted Mexican baby meat mixed in.
Besides, I've always been a burger man. I don't know if folks in the States have these, but in Canada we have Harvey's. A slab of meat so thick you think they ran over a cow with an asphalt compactor to make it, and toppings and condiments sliced fresh and put on the burger right before your eyes. I'm pretty sure there's even a priest in the back, sprinkling the meat with holy water.

Had a place here in Portland (dont remember the name it burned down about 10 years ago) But they made the best burgers and my favorite was called a Farmer Burger. It was 1 1/2 lb burger patty (cant remember if that was weight before or after cooking) 1/2 pound of sliced ham 8 strips of bacon and 2 eggs (over easy for me, loved to sop up the yoke) and I'd have them top it with deep fried onion rings and lettuce and mayo. And the buns buttered and toasted on the grille. Man I miss those burgers...but my arteries dont . Probably a good thing for me they burned down.

Occationally, I start to question wether we're supposed to eat meat at all. I mean, raw meat and fur doesn't go down very easily, while ACTUAL predators in the wild feasts upon cadavers. Our eyes might be aligned as of that of a killer, but our stomachs and gag reflexes does not back up that we are actual flesh eaters. Then again, we're terraformers, we change EVERYTHING into something we can handle, including cooking which is an act of terraforming as we're altering the attributes of meat to be able to eat it.
No, Im neither vegitarian nor vegan. Sometimes meat just grosses me out.
