Edited by: Grifter Treysik on 14/10/2005 13:56:03 Ok, so I think I am doing great in EVE, after my 3rd day.
I have all level 1`s in my Primary/Secondary skills, level 2 in Learning, Memory and Intellect ( don`t remember the learning names). I am working on level 3 Memory, while I am here at work. I`ve gotten a ton of level 1 skills (that I purchased) and trained to level 1, in preparation to train them for getting better ships and using a variety of equipment. They only take 15 minutes or so, so I was able to do A LOT of them while playing.
Anyhow, on to my actual question:
Ok, so I am flying a Merlin, and it`s fairly well equipped, atleast I think - 2 railguns, 2 launchers, a Small Shield Booster and 2 Power Diagnostics (i got this setup from a post here, Solar Sailor - Thanks, great guide!).
So, I`m a pure fighter, I`m not into mining or anything else really. Politics later on (military type), but for now, just normal missions. I`m tearing through level 1 missions, not taking any damage at all. Still in .9 space.
I have about 1.2 million ISK (not a whole heck of a lot). So, going all out fighting, is the Merlin going to suit me through level 2 missions?
I`m just trying to figure out when it will be best to upgrade. Do I buy a Destroyer now, then upgrade to a Cruiser or Assault ship, or just wait and save up for a BS? Will the Merlin lsat me that long?
Thanks in advance for any help in advance!

While a cruiser is 5 or 6 million you will need to learn the skill to get the BS in the long run.
And considering that a BS is about 100million... Yeah i would say get a cruiser... Cruiser are more tough then frigates but slower so use duals or drones to kill those little frigs or missiles.
Destroyers are nice but they will not resist to a cruiser (PvP) where a frig could turn around and warp out much faster...
But you should consider going down to 0.5 systems there a destroyer or a frigate will pay it self fast and no PvP. Just watch frigs with missiles cause they can take you out if you are not carefull.

Right well I'd personally change from a merlin to a kestrel as a kestrel is the better of the two as you can fit 4 launchers with should dish out more damage. I'd not bother with destroyers jump straight to cruisers either a caracal as your caldari or a thorax as they are meant to be well overpowered (so I've heard) Assault ships will take you a while to train to and while training for them you should have gone past the cruiser skills you need so you can upgrade to a cruiser in the mean time.
Hope that helps

BTW some lvl 2 missions (security like kill the traitor) will make you warp in Dead space very close to a big bunch of desimator drones so be sure to be able to hold you ground or take hem out very fast.

I'm a few days ahead of you....I suggest the destroyer. The frigates are strong enough for some lvl 2 stuff but you will run into a numbers problem on some missions. They will swarm you and without the added firepower of 8 yes 8 slots they will overwelm your frigate. In addition it will take days to learn those cruiser skills. Get the destroyer while you train those up and play around with the power. You lose some speed but where you are flying speed isn't needed....my 2 isk. 0ss0

Thanks all for the great replies! I still have a bit before I decide. Lots of decisions, I love this game!

I haven't done lvl 2 missions in a very very very long time, but if there's a place where some drones are close (like, closer than 5km), you could consider chaning your setup to have 2 light ion blasters and 2 rocket launchers (optimal around 900m) and just get close and blow them to pieces -- then warp out and get the ship you're used to.
Although I personally dislike destroyers, but I hear from my noob friends that they're lots of fun and a good intermediary between frigates and cruisers. If you ever need help doing missions, feel free to convo me =) -------------------------------------------

Personally I would suggest going the route of a cruiser. You'll get better shields and armor compared to a destroyer and as your cruiser and weapon skills increase you should even be able use a cruiser for some lvl 3 missions.
which will also pave the way for a battlecruiser since most of the weapons and fitting skills for a cruiser will help you with a battlecruiser. A member of my corp is making a bold step to go from a merlin directly to a battlecruiser, obviously his intrests are in the larger ships.
On the other hand, if your desire is for flying interceptors or assault frigates you may want to go the destroyer route and do some heavy training on small weapons/weapon specalization.
**** Cliff notes version **** If you want big ships go cruiser, if you want small ships use the destroyer until you get the skills/cash to buy into a ceptor or assault frigate. The Destruction of your ship is usually preceeded by the thought,"I think I will try somthing a little different this time...." |

Thanks! I am more interested in going for the larger ships, to be honest. Deciding on which route to go, when it comes to upgrading my ship, is the most confusing part for me right now.
I want more ranged, then up close and personal fighting and in a larger ship.
My planned setup is to do ranged combat fighting - then, also use Covert ops ships. Part of some roleplaying with my character.
And KadaEI, I may look you up. I thought about joining the Academy. =)

I skipped the destroyer route and went straight to a caracal. I had alot of problems doing level 2 missions with a merlin. There would always be one or two ships that would give me alot of trouble. Any missles were deadly to my merlin :(
I found running level 1 missions with the occasional 2/10 and 3/10 complexes in the merlin gave me enough money to afford the caracal when my skills were ready. I've been flying it since and haven't had any problems with level 2 missions.

Merlin can handle some low quality Level 2, but they are best done in a cruiser. Destroyers are nice little toys just now, but they need some lovin' from the devs.
The merlin however should stand up to spawns down to 0.5 (even at low skills it can still take on a few of the lighter spawns there).
Hope the setup helped you in getting used to combat, good luck in eve ------- Bringer of Squirrelly Wrath - Foaminian Card Cult

if you like the mix of rails and launchers, work toward a moa 4 turret 2 launcher best cal cruiser for guns.... if you prefer missles the caracal is your choice
and if you want lots of midslots to put a shield tank in or play with e-warfare blackbird
