Many of the ship models have air intakes for their engines. No air in space.....

Edited by: Entity on 14/10/2005 23:50:18 They're not air intakes. They're corpse scoops (*1). Everytime you kill someone (e.g. for making a pointless statement!), you can try to scoop up the corpse with the intake, and it gets you a bit extra cap energy (*2).
*1) corpses do not actually go into the intake visually.
*2) amount of cap gained equals the amount you'd have gained over the period it took you to align the intake in front of the corpse.

On a slightly less silly note: they're not neccessarily -air- intakes. Like the Starship Enterprise has bussard collectors, and.. well. *shrug*... why not just call it artistic freedom

Hmm...in kali (or later) our ships might be able to fly in the athmospere of planets. At tleast then we will need them

Technically space is not a complete vaccum, if I remember my school science, there is still a variety of gases floating around from the big bang.

The amount of gasses floating around in space is negligible... unless you go into a nebula, or the atmosphere of a planet or somewhat..
also, as for flying on planets- almost no ship in eve is actualy aerodynamic enough to fly worth a crap without basing its lift entirely on speed... _____________________________ NPC Asteroid Belt Bases Honor Above Self Glory For Self Strength Of Self |

Well, theres antigrav systems, ie tractor beams. How else do you think we pick stuff up from 1.5km away?

its not AIR-Intakes, its the powersupply, it sucks up the particals in space and uses it as its energy sorce, HOWEVER the minmatar ships dont use space particals as ther energy sorce, as they use SOLAR ENERGY as they have SOLAR PANELS witch are the things that look like sails etc

based on how many particals generaly wander in open space, and how many of them could actualy be used in a fusion/fission/combustion reaction, solar panels would be much more efficient _____________________________ NPC Asteroid Belt Bases Honor Above Self Glory For Self Strength Of Self |

The standard way of doing it is a Bussard ramscoop, which uses a big-ass magnetic field to scoop up particles like a giant funnel. Lets you sweep a much larger volume.

Generally not from the big bang--its called the interplanetary, interstellar, and intergalactic medium, respectively. Its produced by stellar winds and supernova explosions.
Each one is about 100,000 times thinner than the last (as I listed them). And its so thin even in interplanetary space that its basically useless. Ramscoops are much more effective in the atmosphere of a planet. - Proud member of the [23].

Space has still a fair amount of particles in the "vaccuum". It may be negligable when resting, but at FTL things build up quickly. You can create low frequency soundwaves if you've a driver that does 300km/sec.
