This stuff about us always bringing bigger numbers is largely rubbish.
When we enter an alliance's space, combat goes through a number of stages:
1) OMGWTF Alliance megablob (BoB outblobbed)
Every alliance member, wife and his dog (or cat) is out in a combat ship. The age old, there's so much lag you cant possibly fight us trick.
We ususally still engage (because most of our fleet leaders are wired that way (nutters)). Might do something sneaky, tactical or clever, but we'll have a fight.
2) PvPers ahoy (Equal Numbers)
The less combat inclined have sloped off surreptitiously to lick / caress veldspar roids and run missions in empire. The PvPers of the alliance, veteran and green are around and about and we get more or less equal numbers (fleet compositions will likely be very different). Some good battles.
3) Die Hard Lunatics only. (mr flibble)
There's two sorts of people left by stage 3:
a) harcore PvPers, people who are so stoked that there's a multitude of targets 23/7 that someone would have to staple their clone to the station in empire to ever get rid of them. Some join other alliances/corps or move about a bit, but stay in the combat arena. Largely fun people to have around.
b) Lunatic delusionalists. This lot think they won the war, they're Napoleon and that theres a secret alliance army hidden behind the sun. They also claim that BoB just out blob them and that we really cant PvP, we're just forum warriors.
They hate us with an unhealthy passion, and convince themsleves and others that we hack / cheat / are gms / only fight in blobs. Some are unpleasant, some are just ticked off.
We tend to have alot more people around at this stage so people come to the conclusion 'bob only fight when they outnumber'.
As a general rule.
Bob will fight outnumbered perhaps 2:1 or more, depends on our fleet composition. (unless it's really really really really really really really stupid to engage and even then dbp still does).
Our enemies will not, unless it's to snipe lone frigates, with 6+ WCS fitted. (exceptions to this rule know who they are, and have earned a great deal if respect)
Some of our fights are going to be harder than others. We've had it easy so far.
