Not being a native of the land of elves and volcanos, I know squat about what there is to do there. I'm also interested to see what EVE players are doing when they get there - a group trip to a pub? candlelight vigil outide of CCP headquarters? Storm the offices for coffee and beer and to check skills?
Post here with what you're going to be doing in Iceland, either as a corp, alliance, or yourself. Also, could the devs explain a little more about the events happening during FanFest? How long will they last? Who will be at what? Give us some info!
Lastly, what are the insider tricks to Rekjavik? Any cheap ways to get around, to go from one place to another, cheap food, cheaper beer, and good places to hang out? I know the Nordica Hotel will be swarming with EVE players, so what's nearby there?
ETA 5 days 9 hours until I get on the plane! ________________________________________________

As an Icelandic native I would say that the cheapest beer in town is Faxe 500ml (160-170 isk), not being a fan of the pubs here i only go to part²s!! (500ml beers in pubs cost something from 450-700 ISK ) There is no frickin cheap beer here in iceland, and if you wanna go places, use the bus system.. most likely the cheapest one around... but it sucks

I'd like to know what there might be for a vegan who doesn't drink alcohol at the fanfest. And sitting around drinking coke while everyone else is getting drunk isn't an option, I tried that before and it was a rather unpleasant experience. What other things are there to do and are there places I can get decent vegan food?

If there's nothing for me to do, I won't be going. I mean, why would I pay all of my money to go to the fanfest if it don't think it'll be enjoyable? I;m sure everyone will have a great time but I am wondering if there's any fun for me to have there.

I bet there are lots of things to do that do not involve meat or alcohole. There are lots of gejsers to see people to talk to events to visit. At there airport you probably can get some broscheurs about activities and places to see. Ride some icelandic horses maybe? Go whalewatching? Walk the glaciers? Look at TomBs Bat?

So, don't go then. I'm sure people will miss you sitting there with your bottle of coke and whining about drunk people and the lack of vegan food. >_>

Ooh, some really nice suggestions there. I wonder if there are enough eve players going to the ff who don't particularly like getting drunk in a bar for several days in a row that it would be possible to make an organised sightseeing trip out of it. I'm still wondering about food, though. I know one of iceland's main sources of food is fish, it being a coastal country, so it might be difficult to find something nice to eat ^^. To tell you the truth, I'm thinking about moing to another country in a few years after I finish my Computer Science degree and iceland sounds nice. I live in Ireland at the moment and I'm not happy with the place.

If you fish in iceland with guns, then this goes a long way to explaining some of eve features

Not to mention explaining that fish is a mainstay on the menu - anything large enough that you need shotguns to kill it is generally edible.*

Not a local, but I'll share experience from last year.
Nordica is about 20-25 mins walk from the city centre. Nearby is a garage and a shop that sells assorted snacks.
Hotel food is excellent, but (free) breakfast aside closest (cheaper) snack food is a nice pizza place just before you get into the city.
Find like minded people and drink alot, grab some duty free booze on the plane as beer there is horribly expensive and you'll need to soften yourself up a bit be fore going out.
Events are around and about .

For my part, given that when I get to the hotel it will be nearly midnight, but my body will think it's actually 1am, (and oddly enough, geograpgically, Reykjavik will be at 11pm... if that all makes sense) I guess I will be going straight to bed.
Exploring the town centre the next day and spotting places to eat will be second thing. ------

I've always wanted to see lava flows - I'm guessing that Iceland might be a place to see that sort of thing? Hawaii is the other option.
I sympathise with not wanting to hang out with people who are drinking when you aren't. It isn't a lot of fun if you're with people that are having a bit of a session, and you can't join in for whatever reason. I've done it a few times (driving to the pub ftl) and it does suck. If people are just having one or two drinks it's fine though.
If the staple diet in Iceland is fish, I'd be screwed if I was going to the FanFest. Can't stand the stuff!

Ugh...most Icelanders have some experience with moonshine. It's really a lot worse than you think it is.
The reason alcohol is expensive is because the government has a monopoly on selling it, defended by the law. ------------------------------------------- Sometimes, I wake up but keep on dreaming. |

If you come to the Fanfest then you may perhaps bask upon the drunken, silly glory of me, Muad'dib, Beastoria, Nolon3, Shad0w Hawk, Komodensis, Aphrod and perhaps Harry Ramo & Khoulkkh.
You'll know it's us because some of us are such nerds that we have Collective t-shirts.
Btw. Cabadrin, close by the Nordica hotel is Kringlan, a shopping mall; it's got cafÚs, supermarkets, a cinema etc etc so you at least won't die of starvation. The clubs and bars in downtown ReykjavÝk all serve about equally expensive alcohol so you won't really save that much by picking some cheap, dirty joint to drink up in. Just pick the place with the biggest quantity of beautiful girls and you should be fine.
The clubs in ReykjavÝk are sadly not as diverse as abroad but we do have alot of them. There's the hiphop joint (Opus), the rock joints (Boomkikker & Grand Rokk), the "posh" clubs (Pravda & more), the place where you always end up in a fight (Gaukur ß St÷ng) and your friendly local gheybar (CafÚ Cosy).
You should really see the sights in ReykjavÝk and in it's vicinity; as a 19 year old gamer I can testify that it's all worth seeing
The last Fanfest was pretty good, I met all sorts of evil CA people (Zelota & Floda anyone?) who scared me with their evil drinking habits and now that there are more than 1 evil entity in Eve (omgcanitbetrue) it should be fun to meet all the fellow players in person!
I hope I haven't sounded too much like a travel agent and that at least a tiny bit of my rambling will be of use to you & all the others coming to Iceland. --------------------------------------

Nice suggestions, thanks for the tips
It looks like we'll have all of sunday to check out the city, and since my flight doesn't leave Keflavik until 4:30 pm on monday, I can see some stuff in the morning.
How far away are the glaciers and/or volcanos from Reykjavik? Would it be worth doing a day trip out there to see the sights?
Also, what about the weather and such - should I even bother with an umbrella, and just bring a gore-tex heavy raincoat with lots of fleece? ________________________________________________

This has info on the "usual" tourist attractions, Gullfoss & Geysir, what's interesting about them and how to book tickets etc.
And here is info on jeep trips on the glaciers in Iceland which is something I can personally recommend as really fun.
About the weather: Don't bother with an umbrella, most of the time the rain is horizontal (maybe more like 45¦). The weather during the fanfest weekend will probably have some rain so don't forget that raincoat just in case...
Aaand that's enough out of me, I'm really sounding like a travel agent now.. --------------------------------------

I recommend going to the ginormous amusement park, the entirely fantastic and super-fun Fj÷lskyldu og H·sd²ragarur. After you've gone on and recovered from all the awesome rides, call a taxi and have him take you to the biggest peen-mall in the world, Smßralind.
For you adrenaline-addicts who can't get enough, there's also Perlan, the lone boob of ReykjavÝk.
Fun facts about Iceland: 24 hours of sunlight in the summer 0 hours of sunlight in the winter 125 earthquakes a year (we have really tough houses)
Not so hot facts about the blue lagoon: Smells like rotten eggs You can't see what goes on below the surface That soft stuff that you walk in... yeah
Caution: Do not come within 1 meter of another Icelander, it's just how things are here. This is made from the bones of tourists who got too close.
Those pink lights in the sky is not a sign of the apocalypse.
Don't forget your watch, make sure you have an alarm clock (the light outside says nothing about what time it is).
Keep those tips and facts behind your ear while here, and you'll be fine.

So it isn't the land of elves and volcanos - It's the land of vikings, bad beer and good video games.
