Cat person, can't stress this enough. Dogs annoy the hell out of me and I get... rather cross, every time I hear one barking. Cats tend to be quiet and generally mind their own business, which I can relate to.
Grew up with cats in the household, only had a dog for a few weeks when a neighbour family went abroad for a couple of weeks. Was mostly chained to a dog house in a field and our cats immediately learned exactly how long the chain was. Entertaining as hell to watch. Truly, you have a dizzying intellect. |

Without taking into account other qualities (which are mostly subjective), dogs simply have more utility than cats (which is an objective fact).
Never heard of a cat:
- herding animals
- scaring off an intruder / fighting off an attacker
- acting as a guard or protecting in any way
- sniffing out bombs, drugs, and even cancer
- finding people who injured / trapped (e.g. collapsed buildings)
- tracking people over long distances (e.g. escaped criminals, kidnapping victims)
- acting as seeing eyes for the blind and guide dogs
- rescuing people from drowning and all other sorts of situations
- actively seeking out other people to get assistance for their owners
- pulling sleds
- retrieving / detecting / running down game during hunts (pretty critical during early / prehistory)

Dogs are among the most intelligent animals, FYI. As a general rule, social hunters are the most intelligent. Hunting requires a certain level of intellect, and complex social networks add another layer to that requirement.
Find me a cat that can understand a few hundred spoken words, read a human's facial expressions (it has been scientifically proven only dogs can do this well, they severely outperform apes), herd other animals on its own, or do anything Endal could and you just found me a dog in a cat costume. How to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you.
But to give my own opinion on the two.. I grew up with both cats and a dog basically from when i was born which makes it..easier for me to accept both i guess.
Dogs are my favorite because they are more affectionate. If you want attention the dog is (most of the time) willing and more then happy to get pet or play. Also their loyalty appeals to me, and i have so many good memories of the dogs i grew up with which also leads me to have more feelings towards them.
Cats however applies more to me because they are more of a challenge. The two cats we have are both rescues and especially the oldest one was.. rough. It took 2 years before she trusted us enough to be willing to be in my lap. She still does not trust my husband or step daughter enough. But its a huge difference from when we first got her and she would run and hide as soon as one of us moved.
And she has also shown an attitude i have never seen in a cat. If my better half is upset about something Holly (the name of the cat) will come and "talk" until she gets my attention and basically lead me over to whatever room he is, if an angry mother in law shows up on the door (ok happened once) she came downstairs and placed her self in front of us and hissed at my mother in law before she went over next to my step daughter and just glared at her until she left. One time i was sick and she placed her self at the bottom of the stairs, kept howling until i went over to her and she moved up the stairs and into the bedroom like this, and when i laid down on the bed she came up and lied down next to me (was still very rare at that time) and she refused my husband to even enter the room. And of course, if we go to bed and she does not notice, she will wake up and start to howl until she hears us calling her which leads to her coming up and "checking that we are there". She stares a lot...and because of her black fur and green eyes..it can get pretty intense. We compare it to this
And of course she can do the basic stuff like playing fetch, open doors where the door does not fit completely in the frame (she can manipulate the latch to give in i guess), talking back to us (well both of them do that) and both listen to their name and follow basic commands like up, down, sleep, cuddle.
So, bottom line is that cats and dogs both appeal to me, but dogs are just more affectionate while most cats will just..latch on to whatever person feeds them in the morning (note, most, not all). But often you have a pet because you want to feel "loved" and dogs definitely do this more and easier then a cat. They actually aren't very bright. Just watch how a cat hunts a mouse vs a terrier. A cat will sit there and wait for hours. A terrier will identify where it is, make noises in the opposite direction it wants it to run in order to flush it out, and then bolt for it when it runs. A group of terriers will even coordinate this. TEST Alliance BEST Alliance |

Not sure if you are responding to Rikki but she is actually a Bengal, not a Savannah. |

Fixed your maths. Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

oh, i was just saying. between cats and dogs... cat, and savannas, specifically.
one of my housemates has a hundred-something pound german rottweiler, and I like it, but I'd rather have a large cat.
something about their cleanliness and dexterity, I think. EDM? you mean EFM-á| Rain6639 > hey. how bat is the phone right now |

While dogs can be just as annoying as cats when it comes to having company over, only a cat knows just the right moment to strut into the middle of a room...flop on the ground and shoot that one leg in the air...and clean its posterior region for about 20 minutes. Awkward silences all around.
Not that the eventual dog ass dragging race isnt freaking hilarious when the inlaws come to visit..... Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

My cat caught a grey parrot once.
Just offered the damn thing to me while it was still wriggling, misplaced love but you know a Dog won't do something so selflessly while being smart enough to act in their self interest to that degree.

Throw a stick, and the servile dog wheezes and pants and stumbles to bring it to you. Do the same before a cat, and he will eye you with coolly polite and somewhat bored amusement. And just as inferior people prefer the inferior animal which scampers excitedly because someone else wants something, so do superior people respect the superior animal which lives its own life and knows that the puerile stick-throwings of alien bipeds are none of its business and beneath its notice.
The dog barks and begs and tumbles to amuse you when you crack the whip. That pleases a meekness-loving peasant who relishes a stimulus to his self importance. The cat, on the other hand, charms you into playing for its benefit when it wishes to be amused; making you rush about the room with a paper on a string when it feels like exercise, but refusing all your attempts to make it play when it is not in the humour.
Whip a dog and he licks your hand - frauth! The beast has no idea of himself except as an inferior part of an organism whereof you are the superior part -- he would no more think of striking back at you than you would think of pounding your own head when it punishes you with a headache.
But whip a cat and watch it glare and move backward hissing in outraged dignity and self-respect! One more blow, and it strikes you in return; for it is a gentleman and your equal, and will accept no infringement on its personality and body of privileges. It is only in your house anyway because it wishes to be, or perhaps even as a condescending favour to yourself. It is the house, not you, it likes; for philosophers realise that human beings are at best only minor adjuncts to scenery. Go one step too far, and it leaves you altogether. You have mistaken your relationship to it and imagined you are its master, and no real cat can tolerate that breach of good manners. Henceforward it will seek companions of greater discrimination and clearer perspective. Let anaemic persons who believe in "turning the other cheek" console themselves with cringing dogs -- for the robust pagan with the blood of Nordic twilights in his veins there is no beast like the cat; intrepid steed of Freya, who can boldly look even Thor and Odin full in the face and stare with great round eyes of undimmed yellow or green.

Very poetic, Ange.
I think it depends on how you view the Cat and Dog. The only ones I know are my nans dog, and my aunts cat. The former is always happy to see me, and i see him as a companion, mans best friend.
With my aunts cat, it depends on her mood. She's like a chaotic neutral. Might sit on your lap and purr, might claw your hand.
Personal preference. Mine is towards dogs. You can't take the sky from me

I've always preferred cats to dogs. There are many reasons for this, such as the fact that cats are a LOT less hassle than dogs due to their independence and ability to take care of themselves. Cats also tend to be more cleanly and smell better. I also find that, in general, they're a lot smarter than dogs as well. As if these weren't enough, I'm also mildly allergic to dogs.
Although cats are much maligned for lack of loyalty, I've found that not to be the case. As an example, the cat my family had when I was growing up would mope around the house meowing and wondering where his human was every time I went off to summer camp. |
