Hello,
I have been playing for a week now and I am just about ready for my next ship purchase. I have about 500K ISK saved and my implant from the first set of storyline missions to sell.
I have been doing level 1 missions and a little mining in my Imicus. Not bad, but some of the combat missions have been a little tough.
So what should I look for in a new ship? I am training my Starship command and Gallente frigate skills up to 3 over the next 12 hours and then I will be ready to pick up a new ship skill.
Industrial ships seem to be in my price range and within easy reach skill-wise. But are they any good for mining? I have heard both yes and no. Is it true they have no drone bays?
If I can't get a good mining ship (larger than a frigate) at this point I guess I could just buy a better frigate or save up more ISK, but it's not that easy to make money quickly in just my Imicus.
Any advice appreciated, Thanks!

If you want to stay mining then get a catalyst(destroyer)
No Industrial ships are not for mining, they are used to haul the ore from the cans you mine into.(you should consider getting an Iteron I or II to complement the Catalyst). ------- Bringer of Squirrelly Wrath - Foaminian Card Cult

I'd say go for the Catalyst, as well. A Gallente friend of mine who just recently started can do most level 2 combat missions with hers. So the level 1 ones should be no problem, and you'll even be able to switch to level 2 fairly soon without needing to instantly upgrade again. I'd recommend that actually, because they really are much better than level 1 missions, and also more interesting.

Like an earlier post said, go for both a catalyst and an iteron. You could train gallente industrial to level 3 fairly quickly to get the iteron 3. This not only can help you with mining (mine with the catalyst, haul with the iteron), but you can also take courier missions or do some trading to make even more money. Although sometimes all of this hauling can get tedious and boring. But then, so can mining. A Catalyst can be a good combat ship for a new player also. I would reccomend doing some combat in a tristan or incursis to get the feel for things, and then move up to the catalyst. You don't want to lose a million isk ship by making some stupid mistake if you have no experience against npc pirates. ---------- Vaux CEO, Red Frog Investments |

Thanks from a lost and lonely Intaki for all your responses.
I guess I will go for the Catalyst then, you all seem to recommend it. How would you fit it? All those hi-points for turrets, I could fit both mining lasers and guns and still have more turrets than I could support. Seems to have a small cargo bay, not much bigger than my good old Imicus.
As for combat, I have been running level 1 missions and storyline missions without much trouble. I have been mining in 0.7 space without losing a ship yet, but if I see too many rats I just run. With a combat fitting setup I have been able to handle any lvl 1 mission battles, in fact they seem easy. I am looking forward to more of a challenge, as soon as I have a better ship ;)
So how many thousand missions must I do to get a level 2 agent anyway?

You don't "get" a level 2 agent in the sense that you will get a referall. Once your standing is high enough you can seek one out and they will give you missions.
Note, if you do most missions within the same corp (say Navy) then you can get higher level agents quicker then you will for other corps as the individual corp standing counts.

Try fitting it like this - Combat: 8x Blasters or Rails 1X 1MN Afterburner 1x Capacitor Recharger 1x Small armour repairer 2x Capacitor Power Relays (replace with Magnetic stabalisers if you can)
Mining: 4x Rails 4x Miner I(named lasers would be better) 1x 1MN Afterburner 1x Small shield booster 3x Co-Processors (replace with Cargo expanders if you can)
Both of these Should have 2 Light scout drones (Mining drones are ok but the tend to attract the nasties first ) ------- Bringer of Squirrelly Wrath - Foaminian Card Cult
